Well it's been awhile since our last ride around the loop guys, what with people busy or with out bikes and stuff, so it's time for another.
Ej's got a new bike he's wanting to test out and I want to enjoy these awesome days by riding as much as I can!
Starting at Kopu Mobil at 9am, break at Corromandel Lookout, lunch at Whitianga, break at Whangamata, split up at Waihi and head home.
Open to all 250 riders who are confident of managing a long but awesome day ride. :niceone: Riders of larger bikes are welcome, but this is a 250 ride, so a 250 pace.
Heres a preveiw of some of the riding:

Shit theres more bikes going up here than cars.
Doesnt seem to be an organised ride..just groups of half a dozen and then 20 or so..hasnt stopped all morning.
Everyone must be getting a ride in b4 the cold weather sets in...
Heaps of classy looking bikes.
And good to see most riders are wearing good gear

coppers are generally pretty sweet given your not exceeding the speed limit by huge amounts.
I don't use a L plate and I don't travel at 70km/h. Driving at 70 when trucks and cars are doing 100 is kinda stupid. I think its safer to go with the flow ;)
Dunno how flash you guys are but I don't have much gear. Jacket, helmet, gloves, steel cap work boots and jeans (maybe two pairs lol)

i think the idea behinsd the 70kph limit is infact to prevent you riding in traffic at 100kph, as for the first 6 months i suppose they consider you to be an absolute novice, which most learners are, especially if they don't have a car licence
Ive worked it out that it costs me $50 per loop, including petrol and food for anyone wondering...
and rubber? not much on a 250 but on the bigger bikes those $500 rear tyres don't last long arounds the coro loop:bye:
@mmie
8th February 2008, 11:40
Ya my guess is that i'l be in need of a new back tyre by the time I've completed the loop.
Over the xmas new year period i've managed to do the northland loop (up westcoast to top then down eastcoast) & over to Hahei & back + day trips etc... Oh & did forgotten highway in October.
Ahh the little 250 dat could.
Bring on the ride. :ride:

It probably depends on what tyres you have and how hard you're riding.
If your ripping through the corners on a soft compound tyre, then It'll cost more, obviously, especially on the big V twins.

Well if it costs you that much the I guess it would cost me more like $100. This things chews petrol and oil like no tomorrow.

Well, as far as I know, no big bikes are in our group, but it sounds like we'll be passed at some stage by a group from Tauranga. :chase:
Me, Mike and Sam were talking of doin the loop again either the weekend after Paeroa, maybe 2 weekends after Paeroa as it's not a cheap day there!
So if anyone misses out on this one, there'll be another ride in the near future.
Generally costs me $20 in fuel and $20 in lunch and snacks. Oh the joy of owning a small bike!
Forgetting the tyres for a moment, I wonder how much gas a 1000cc is getting through around the loop?

hey guys
looks like you'll have an awesome day.
Did the anti-clockwise loop on Waitangi day. Road was sweet apart from some non-sign posted grit just south of Whangamata.
We didnt do the Kopu-Hikuai road, but others reported some roadworks in that run.
and remember to watch out for the 4WD's towing boats using half of your side of the road!

depends on the thou (and how you ride it), but an inline 4 would use a good tanks (15-16L) worth going kopu to kopu (190km ish iirc) - and you'd be on reserve.

Even then thats economical. Not sure the size of my tank but costs me $20 to fill once it hits reserve. I know I will need filling at kopu and then not sure if I will even make it to whitianga ( Hopefully will on reserve ;) )??
Macstar
9th February 2008, 07:18
You've probably already left for the loop, but anyhow, there is a station in Coro town (half way to Whitianga) plus I doubt it's 200km from Kopu to Whitianga considering the whole loop from Akl is just over 500kms.

FUCK...yeah! Is all I can say . Was an awesome as ride, mint to meet everyone. I think you'll be seeing ALOT of photos up here ay! One off in terms of Bomma on his zx7r, he's fine but bike's not too great, from what I heard he hit a rock. Another crash was a SUV on it's top off the road lol that was interesting. My bike played up a bit, got to Coro lookout and it wouldn't start, just made a ticking noise, bumped it and off I went. From then on it started fine...UNTIL halfway up Kopu hill I went to pass and just lost all power and cut out, lights dash and all! Wouldn't do anything for a while then finally bumped it with the help of you guys from Auck :2thumbsup. Now it starts up fine again WTF! Loose connection maybe?
Anyway, looking forward to those photos! And hope the ride down the Waihi was allllll good.
Cheers guys! Not to forget Amy (I think) :)

Well, make that 2 bins, I lowsided on some slick tar just south of Whangamata and into the gravel, I was going at a medium pace at that stage, bad luck I spose, Bike is all good, just a few scratches and I rode it home (I love dirt bikes!), I'm typing this up with a sprained thumb at the mo', apart from that, jacket and pants arn't even scratched while my gloves are pretty cut up, my hands would have been mince with out them.
Cheers to GIJoe and Camo for coming back to check up on me even though I was back on the road by then.
Still, I had a good ride home just going slow, was an awesome day over all, great to see some new faces as well as the regulars.
Cheers to Midnightmike for voluntering your bike for the camera today, looks like some great footage I should have up with in a day or so.

Style points have to go to EJ for his stunting and thanks Deano for riding at the back with me :D. Sadly the GN just lacks enough power to really keep up on the up hill bits, but saying that; its time for a service so that might change things!

Finished by heading to the Karaka pub for a beer with my Dad and his mates lol, well deserved I thought! Ha!
Definitely full loop next time (Even though it's apparently only 30mins more), but maybe a diff place for lunch or ring in advance so that we wont be sitting around for an hour before some damn pasta and BLATs arrive!!!

And what was the name of the guy on the KR150? He gets a credit in the video along with Renegade Master and MidnightMike!
Guy on the KR was Shane, he's from Tokoroa not a KBr but should be!!!
Had a good ride by all accounts thats to Bomma & co for alerting me to my lack of air. You should see the lack of tread on my rear tire now!!! :shit: I really needed a new tire before the ride lets just say its well over due now, hopefully the testing officer isn't too picky when i go to sit my restricted in 2 wks time cose i need a bit of coin before i can get a new one.
Glad no one was too badly hurt and i can cant wait to see the rest.

More like relay rectifier or the alternator if you're really unlucky. Don't you know that on a Honda bike a regrec is considered a consumable? :D

Well just got in the door meself after doing a mini-ride at the end with Gremilin and Zapf! :woohoo: I had done me chores by 12.30ish and was thinking "feck those guys must be loving it on the Coro"
As consolation I went to Kaiaua for some Toasties ... but decided I wanted a pie instead ... at Tairua! :innocent: Anyway, got there, and :gob: WHO ATE ALL THE BLOODY PIES!? :angry2: Had to settle for a powerade and a roasted beef sammy ... :weep:
Txted EJ to see where they were, checked my watch and thought "feck it, I'll ride up to Whitianga and see if they are coming this way!"
Whaddya know, Renegade_Master and crew come crusin' it down the twisties as I was heading up them!
All good, caught up with the crew, chewed the fat over the highs and lows, helped EJ tighten up loose screws on his pillion handle and generally got the thumbs up for parachuting in as Elite reinforcements on the ride.
Too much blardy stopping and sitting around I reckon :oi-grr: Roads to ride and heres all these bikers stooped on seats that ain't attached to a bike!
Welps, a few of us shot up to Whangamatarian way and down to Waihi before gasgasing it to Paeroa and back home ... Sorry to hear about the bins and thank gosh no one was seriously injured. :sweatdrop
On the way home, it was a dog and pony show with Gremlin, Zapf and I ... I think the public must have thought the asylum was let out and the inmates got hold of moronsickles! I was stung several times by an irate wasp before I managed to do the Maori Haka and swat the dang thing in my jacket. Was blardy funny to see Zapf have a Mynah bird bounce off him on Sky-High road in Clevedon, if it was youngling, I'd reckon he'd be up on "Minor" charges ...
Next time, I guess I should see if I can ride out from the start! :msn-wink:

Ha! I wound my rear shock preload onto max but she was still a bit soft (Bommer and I make up about 180kgs combined), so the pegs never stood a chance really.
Was it you that had the low tyre pressures? Get it sorted at Tairua? Did the bike ride better afterwards?

Ya it did perform better afterwards; the air machine wasn't working properly so needed to do it at the mobil just before the whangamata turn off. Yes handing did pick up a bit but man did it chew out the remainder of my bald tire.
As much as i hate to admit it, it was one of those things that as a girl i kept overlooking :spanking: never mind i know now and wont make the same mistake again. Now all that is needed a new tire and i'll be sweet!

Sweetas. Riding with a semi-flat tyre will cause it to square off in the middle part of your tyre and make cornering a bitch. Also the rubber will wear out quicker.
If you need any other suggestions on regular pre-ride bike inspection stuff let me know.

My photos will be up by noon tomorrow, turns out I took 43, some didnt work, mainly because they were underexposed, out but all the rest I resized and cropped. Some real good ones there. If your wanting full res ones just pm me your email adress and which ones you want.
To bad about the bins. Deano, did you stop at Katikati when you went past with me doing my earplugs? Or did you carry on?
Anywho, that video looks cool. Thing is im barely revving it so it just sounds like a muffled SV. Hopefully the sound for the next one will come out, because the pace had quickened for the last leg, and at 10,000+ rpm it sounds like a gixxer thou! :devil2:
Shit thing is, im running on dial-up speed at the moment, so videos take forever to load, and so do pictures. :pinch:

MetVUW.com/forecast is the best long range forecast I reckon. Show's expected rain and wind for up to a week out.
Just click on the "Surface wind, MSLP and rainfall" 7 day and look at all the pics. Each image is the amount of rain the the preceding 6 hours. So the 1pm image is the morning rain and the 7pm image is the afternoon.
Very handy for planning rides :)

It's been said quite a lot already BUT Fucken brilliant pictures guys. Some of these are what you'd expect to see in motorcycle magazines and websites!!
Well done.
P.S. Isn't it strange how that video you took Deano looks so bloody dodgie i.e. as if a bin might occur at any second, but then in reality the ride down the hill was realitively subdued with no real excessive speeds or anything. I can only imagine that a non-motorcyclist watching it would be absolutely freaked out!
