If wheather allows it ...
(Wheather according to metservice should be fine

Sun 10 Dry. Light winds.
http://www.metservice.co.nz/default/index.php?alias=farmwairarapa
:devil2:)

... 'KSlider' suggested to do the Makiro track on Sunday 10.02.2008, starting 9:30 AM at Caltex rimutaka. If there is someone not coming from Wgtn I guess could join us somewhere else ...

There is going to be some ride to be done, so be prepared .

Anybody keen is welcome ... :slap: with a so called adventure motorbike of course, whatever that means

Cause I'm "the new one" to this stuff, relatively speaking anyway (some may say I just don't learn). I'll let the ones that knows to detail how the heck to get anywhere close that track.

Reference to rides in the past so you can see what is all about:

How do you guys reckon it would suit an 'off tar seal virgin' with MT90 rubber? Also, looks like a good chance of showers for much of the day - does this make a difference?

Each to their own, you could be a good rider but I would suggest to ride some other "less challenging" tracks first.

This track is not too bad (but it can be), but last time we had an "off tar seal" virgin and they really struggled
But as always the other riders helped them out ok :):2thumbsup

Just my thoughts

OV Lander could be nasty if damp as the track has deep clay ruts described by Aslan as a tramping track could be hard going on a 190Kg bike

.We do Gravel rides regularly so you are welcome to come along and get some practice just PM Aslan, Pampa,Busa Jim or myself we can organize something .

Have a look at the Capitol coast adventure as this is a great ride and well worth the effort.

I'll be in if it doesn't piss down.

Had a nosey around the north end the other day. Quite overgrowen, but OK. Could be a struggle for novices or big bikes.

Hmm Thats got me wondering if I should come, I'm not a off tar seal virgin, but wouldn't describe myseelf as a good dirt rider. I have been over the Porika from the Rotoroa end, and also over the track from New creek to Denniston down south recently, How does it compare to them?

I'd say you can give it a crack, there is always time to turn around and go back if you feel uneasy, the track seems intimidating  or whatever. I'm not a good of road rider at all, and have started just 4/6 months ago but with the help and patience of others managed do some nice stuff :D.

Haven't ride on the other Island yet so cannot provide any useful comparison tho

Its not as steep as Porika, just tight and windy and very overgrown.
I am not the best off road rider either, but this is a track that will sharpen your skills:2thumbsup
There are some ruts in the centre of the track that sometimes you have to get into, and sometimes you have to avoid

See this thread for some images that will show you what it is like :2thumbsup

I suspected from the photos elsewhere that this one might not be the ideal entry. A pity really, 'cos this Sunday is the first full free day I've had in ages.

I still have a lot of off-seal skills to learn and would really appreciate a day or two with you guys to get me started with these skills.

If there is anybody out there happy to invest time in a gravel novice this Sunday, then I'd really appreciate it!

Hi Mate
If you've done those two tracks then I don't think you should have any worries about coming along. If it's wet then I'd say we'd all be having fun (esp. Jim on the big beemer - actually he seems to have too much fun - not necessarily while it's happening though - but basks in the glory later :bleh:), and the more hands the better too. And there's always the choice to turn back. The more the merrier.

I'm coming from the north, so what time shall we meet in Pahiatua. 11ish?

Right, I'd better go and start wrestling with my back tyre.

I was talking about the one on the first post, Caltex rimutaka (SH2). Regarding the time I'm not sure cause don't know how long it will take to us (first time for me doing it) but surely some of the other guys should be able to answer that.

Well we met at Caltex Rimutaka at 9.30,Busa Jim Pampa Rob888 Howie and myself headed over the hill about 9.50 to stop for gas at Pahiatua where we were to meet Bart at 11.30,the weather was claging in a bit so at 11.50 we opted to make a start.
We were soon at the start, time to lower tyre pressure as it was now damp.the bush was a bit overgrown making it hard to see the ruts ,as usual I dropped my bike first on a silly hump between 2 deep ruts but the boys soon arrived to help turn the bike right way up, I don't know why Dakars always end with handlebars lower than the wheels. The big GS had to be manhandled out of some head deep ruts but we were soon out and on our way to Wahi Falls. This is a great piece of road, excellent for power sliding ay Robb.
On the way to the Falls a display of unorthodox cornering caused a small accident, I didn't know what my injuries were until I was in the shower and my little finger went up me nose while I was washing my face, what was that i thought only to find my finger was bent down and had no feeling in it,so I suppose it will off to the quack if it doesn't improve in a couple of days any way we got to the falls which were a bit dry and something was dead so we didn't linger, from there we had a quick ride to Pongoroa and onto Masterton via Alfredton then home.
Feel free to add gory details and photos if you wish guys

Well I arrived late to Rimutex, but the others were still there, glad I made it otherwise it might have been mistaken for a BMW ride. K slider has already described most of the route, so I won't add a lot apart from that the KLR also had a lie down on the track, but no harm done apart from a slightly sore wrist, thanks for the help picking it up. It was good to meet you guys.

Obvious to find u mean? Yeap, if you can get up to the Makiro road is easy, plus the track doesn't have any deviation so no problems in there either (if u take a deviation u r in problems, drop is high).

Hey Mark

I could be wrong , but I thought there was a route choice we got on the track.
At one point I thought we got to a Y intersection,
One track heading down to our left and the other off to our right.
We took the left hand track.

The right hand track is a dead end after a couple of hundred metres. Apparently there used to be a hut there years ago. My old man used to go hunting in there about a thousand years ago.

I've just "stolen" Jims KMZ file of the route. I'll have ago at putting it up on my new web site advroutes.org.nz (http://advroutes.org.nz) as my first North Island track :)

I'm guessing that a basic description of the route would be "muddy rutted dirt surfaced track. Knobbly tyres recommended". Also guessing it fits in the Difficult group?

Time for me to start trolling KB for old KMZ/KML files :D

Hey Ryan

If you're interested I have the kmz ( or gpx if you prefer ) file that covers the whole trip we did.
I just put in the Makiro track as the server only allows very tiny
kmz files to be uploaded ( for some reason it only allows a 4k kmz file )

You're probably not interested in the whole trip up from Welly but maybe the
extra bits from the Tui brewery to the start of the track might be useful.

Let me know, if you're keen and I'll email you the extra bits :)

See this thread (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=67403) .I need to make it clear on the advroutes site that I dont really want the whole track for a ride. This means I have to dissect the files for the bits of relevance. This is probably the most time consuming part of adding a new route. Also because I know very little about the north island tracks I'm not sure that I can will even be able to do it.

What I really want is just the route itself i.e. basically where you turn into the route to where you turn off it. I know this description is a little vague but if people can navigate to the "start" of the track (which ever end they are starting at) using the roads shown by Google Maps then I dont want those roads. I need to keep file sizes minimal so that the page loads reasonably quickly. At the moment the plan is to have all routes showing when the page is loaded but I may have to work around this later on some how.

Cheers R
