View Full Version : Whine-tangi Day and Maori Protocol?
Paul in NZ

I'm starting to really really dislike Waitangi Day. It seems that it drags out every person with a grievance (real or imaginary) and offers them a chance to claim back this or jostle that and get it all on the front page of the media. It's never been a day of celebration but rather a day of anger and bile - pointless and harmful.
I'm not blaming Maori, Helen Clarke or even the media - but rather I just don't care anymore. Certainly I don't see anything to celebrate. Better to give Waitangi back to the stupid lecturer and let him turn it into a theme park or extend the golf course or something. Its hardly sacred ground is it?
On a slightly different but related topic, I was interested in the comments around increased intimidation in Marae Protocol. Its not a subject I'm terribly familiar with or even want to know anything about anymore. I could however understand what they were going on about with the dog noises though. My own experiences to date have been pretty negative and hostile and I have found myself giving any Marae a wide birth - I don't need the grief and would try to avoid another visit at almost any cost.
So - has it always been so?
I suppose so, people (Maori and non Maori) have been cunts for centuries - the romantic past is usually a construct of our imagination I'm just too tired to care this year.

Exactly - the only fun in the whole 'Waitangi' thing is wondering if someone will actually get assaulted as well as insulted this year or not.

It's a day off. Enjoy it. No doubt there are politicians who will make all sorts of outrageous statements tomorrow to appeal to their adoring fans. The media will not allow a sensible and serious debate on "Maori issues". Conflict and misreporting attracts more people and sells more advertising.
I'm past caring and plan to do a return trip to Akitio tomorrow, weather permitting.

Yeah day off to go riding. Hitcher I will be on this ride North Range Road (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=66159)and if we do Pori Road we will come out on the Pongaroa - Alfredton Road say may spot you if by coincidence we coincide on that stretch of seal. I'll probably steer them off that road on the way South and take the gravel via Bideford to head to Masterton.

It's fair to assume that we may meet up then. Since it sounds like the Manawatu/HB/Rapa ride is ging to be in them there parts (Woodville 10:10)
Fair comments Paul. It used be a day of nationhood now it's just embarrassing to all concerned. Was going to suggest that to expunge all those horrid connotations of the day, a ride beginning at Rimutex (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=1412491#post1412491) and then to distant parts (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=66240) might be a good idea. I know you're not that fond of group rides but it'd be nice to meet up aong the way.

... weather permitting.
Rural forecasts:-
Manawatu: Fine and sunny. Southeasterlies, fresh by day, easing in the evening.
Wairarapa: Mostly cloudy, but fine spells in the afternoon, especially inland. Southeast winds, fresh at first.
Hawkes Bay: Mostly cloudy, with isolated light showers. Southerlies, fresh at first.
So it's warm gear I'm thinking and maybe a little rain gear

I see Waitangi Day like this. For Maori it's a beat up and an excuse to blame all and sundry for their woes.
For us it's an excuse for the polies to strut their stuff and show how much they care...............with our money.
New Zealand will never have any harmony on this day as it is a day of greavance for both Maori and now 'Pakeha.' It needs consigning to the dustbin of history.

My view is that as a "national day" it sucks completely. As you say, its been hijacked by the likes of those Harawiras and all that crew. Not only that but it isnt even a "proper" day off holiday: if it falls in a weekend you dont get the Monday off.
My view: scrub it. Let the munters who want to argue about it do so.
Make ANZAC day our national day. All shops closed same as Christmas day and Easter Sunday.
No right to vote or receive any form of state assistance unless you attend a dawn parade or provide a medical certificate that you couldnt go.
Anzac day celebrates what makes this country great: international recognition, co-operation, bravery and sacrifice, and it doesnt matter what colour you are or whose great grandfather screwed over who out of what scrubby bit of backcountry*.
I will be out riding my motorbike if the weather is reasonable.
*I exaggerate slightly for effect.

Sorry mate, but it's gone from being a National Day of celebration to being the sort of angry rant you just popped up.
You're also about as racist as it gets, but I guess I'm not "entitled" to say that. My ancestors put up with a 2000 years of oppression and genocide and there's fuck all of us left. Might one assume that you are a maori? Let me ask you some questions: (and since you've personalised the whole debate by calling me names, I shall continue in that vein)
Background: I, thru the extraordinarily large tax bills I pay every year, have contributed directly to the settlement of maori greivances, and have paid a lot of money to various tribes over the past few years.
What have you done with my money?
How much had trickled down to you, the maori person walking or riding down the street?
Why do you feel entitled to more?
Why have the various appalling statistics relating to health, education and welfare and violence relevant to maori people not been improved by the large quantities of money I have paid you?
If not now, how much more money will you want till you can start sorting out this stuff yourself?
When is a "final settlement" a final settlement?
Why is the stone-age concept of a "tribe" thought to be relevant in 2007?
When will you stop whining and just get the hell on with it like the rest of us?
PS, any answer containing the words "colonialism" or "racism" is unacceptable.

$20k? not to get into a pissing contest or anything, but I pay provisional tax, and if I get a note from my accountant that my prov tax payment (3 monthly) is less than $20k I think they've forgotten something.
I'm self employed, and my last sick days (three of them) were about three weeks ago. Thanks for asking, I feel much better now.

Seriously - this day has become a focus for the angry hate mechants, it will never resolve anything and I reckon it should be abandoned before it causes more conflict. - I really dislike it and I suspect a large proportion of Maori roll their eyes up in horror at the thought of it - but of course I wouldn't know because I am scared of Maraes...
However - I suppose the real question is - how much of what goes on IS genuinely protocol and how much is tweaked to grab a headline?

Yep - you are right but on the other hand, we all have crosses to bear in life - I hate my bloody insulin and all the crap that goes with it like a life expectancy on average 33% shorter, my wife hates her dyslexia and being 5' tall with a crushed vertebrae... It's not your issues that matter in life but how you deal with them really!
Still, I think you will find your words have increased your standing (well in my eyes) and I would be genuinely interested in what you think. I've had some really bad experiences with Marae protocol etc from some seriously agro people but spent some delightful time discussing Te Reo and other issues with folks (came away quite impressed by the commitment required)

You're also about as racist as it gets, but I guess I'm not "entitled" to say that. My ancestors put up with a 2000 years of oppression and genocide and there's fuck all of us left. A lot of us ended up here, but we're being made unwelcome once again. Big chunks of my racial history are dead and gone. My language effectively died out during the 19th centrury diaspora of my people, but you don't care about welcoming me as a fellow sufferer at the hands of the same people who stiffed you, you just think all white people are "English".
So it's copacetic then?

Waitangi Day should be a celebration of our Country, by ALL New Zealanders, but sadly it has been hijacked by the vocal minority and turned into a "bitch about whatever annoys you" day. Sod them all. Lets start our own tribe called "Ngati Kiwi", open to ALL Proud New Zealanders, regardless of race or creed, and then we can celebrate "Our Day" as a day of pride!!!!!!
I don't care what you call it but keep it as a holiday, at least that way I know my house won't be graffitied, my sister raped, my business burgled or my vehicles stolen because any potential offender will be in Whinge Tangi.

Being the only brown face in a corporate world,.
Christ I know how that feels - I had a job in Dallas once and headed off one night to some mall that was having sales for some thing or other for the troops at home. 30mins into my shopping I realised I was the only white face in any direction for quite some distance (ie further than I could see) - it was quite an experience. One kind soul asked me - 'Sir - are you lost?" When I said no he smiled and gave up on me...
It was fun really - no trouble but I got sick of people staring at me.
Another trip I ended up in some Malaysian kampong at 3am with a whole lot of jokers I was supposed to be working with 10 miles away any I was definately the only euro for miles - that was fun too but they thought I was freakin nuts not taking sugar in my plastic bag full of tea....

Concur. I always find if I get to know someone first, I can really get to dislike them more intensely on a personal level, not something irrelevant like skin colour.
Just to hijack a bit more, there was a very funny "30 Rock" where Liz Lemon had a date with a black guy, and it was clear that their personalities were incompatible, but she felt compelled to continue the relationship because she didnt want to be seen to breaking up with the guy because he would think and people would assume it was because he was black and she was white.... I like that show, though my favourite characters are Jack Doneghy (Alec Baldwin) and Kenneth.

I know that 8,000 more NZ residents went to Aussie compared with previous year, however, stats can be misleading.
A lot of people immigrate to NZ as it is easier than getting into Aussie, wait for NZ citizenship and then bugger off so a lot of this increase could be pre-meditated rather than due to policies.

Being an immigrant I am honest when I say that Wiatangi Day has no meaning to me, but understand it does for others.
For me I struggle with the fact that something signed over 150 years ago is still being debated when NZ and the world have moved on beyond the 'Treaty'.
I know the Maori feel they have lost out on land and from what I have been told some of it has merit, however, man has for 1000's of years fought over land, some lose, some win and then it swings around again.
I guess the question is are Maori overall worse off now than they would have been had the Brits not landed? The Maori have tribes who fought eachother so how do we know that they would not have had battles over land without any outside interference.

I appreciate the day off,yes it's part of our history good or bad, that depends on who you are or what has been ingrained into you by parents etc.
As an aside with guys riding today a question for you,if when riding, a bike is stopped on the roadside, how many maori would stop only for a bro, likewise how many whites would stop for white only,NONE at all,we would stop for anyone on roadside,colour-ethnic wouldn't enter the fray.Sure the politics of the day are abounding, but if all you want to do is moan about who's fault is it,get a life, there are faults and it isn't just one day.
The part I hate is it happened generations ago,why didn't the English sort it out around 100 yrs ago, shit both maori and white fought side by side in numerous wars, remember gallipoli, following the stuffed up plans of motherland, numerous ww2 stuff ups,all this in the name of sovereignty and crap, and still QE is not amused.:spanking:

Sugilites Waitangi Day as written by a reporter "Five Maoris were involved in detaining a white European male against his will on Waitangi Day. The victim was planning to attend a Waitangi celebration ride with a large group of friends. He was only released once Waitangi Day was over."
Sugilites Waitangi Day as written by Anthony Bradford "Geez I'd love to go on that KB ride. Bugger it, my wife (A Maori) has taken one of my sons to operate a stall at a market in order to bring home the bacon. That leaves me to look after our other 3 Maori children for the day, But hey, no problem, I love my kids and there will always be another KB ride around the corner. As for my wife, her work day will start at 5 am and finish at 9pm and don't forget the six hours of driving. She is awesome for supporting the family like that."
While one copy is being somewhat economical with the truth, I wonder which story would sell more newspapers?
So here I am on KB watching people prattling on about an image created largely by a tiny minority and inflated way out of proportion by media that exists purely to make a profit by any means possible.
You suckers.:baby:
My perception of racists goes beyond color. I see them as being the lowest denominator in society, and they put themselves there. If there are no foreigners around, then hate the outsiders for their religion, take that away, hate the outsiders not born in your town, take away that, hate the ones not born in your family. These people will always find the lowest denominator. After excluding all other social contact, thats when their own brothers and sisters rumps look tastier than the raw bloody steaks on their own plates.
So why don't the borderline racists posting on this thread go and get on your bikes, go for a ride and seek illumination, or I might get CYPHS onto yous :scooter:
