Im hoping to look at 2 bikes today, need to buy one today.
The 2 bikes on the shortlist are:
2006 Kawasaki Z750, 35000kms, $7k
1999 Suzuki TL1000S, 35000kms, $6.5K
My budget is $7k. I could get both of them down $500 I reckon,
What are the pros and cons of either, and ultimately, which is the better bike - in terms in reliability, performance and easy to live with.

Test ride them both and see which one you feel comfortable on and riding.
That is what matters the most.

Only thing that concerns me about the Z, is the revvy as buzzy engine, lack of fairings etc..
Do they eat up the K's nicely? how many K's to a tank did you used to get?
Oh and what sort of speed can you sit at without being torn apart by wind?

engine only buzzy over 6-7,000 rpm, ie its ok at cruising speeds. if you're wanting to spend a lot of time in the high revs then it may (or may not) be an issue.
a) around 16km per litre.....
b) depends how strong you are!
what are you wanting to use it for?

How about a taxi/bus/lift to work while you them ride them both? Just to hear any death rattles, dodgy handling, crash repairs etc.
Otherwise it's the Kwacka for the bulletproof motor, build quality and age. Givi make heaps of 750 bits like screens and so forth.
The TLS has that strange shock/damper arrangement. The handling is nowhere near as bad as the press made out but it doesn't suit everybody. But that motor is one of the best V2s ever made IMHO.

If you buy either you'll need to redo the suspension. The Z750's rear shock is appalling and the fork springs need replacing from new, and cartridge emulators would be a really good idea. I have a Z750 rear shock if the one you are looking at still has the original suspension. It will be well shagged at the mileage you quote. My one has done 6000kms.
The TL responds well to a new rear damper unit. If this hasn't been done, budget for it.
There's been a mountain of stuff written on Z750s, Z750S', and TLS's on KB. Use the search. Seriously. There are some really good idea for sensible mods for both, rather than the usual fucking ugly bodywork and anodised screws.

TL. Everyone that had one regrets selling. The vast majority have had something done about the rear shock by now so just find out what they've done.

Z750
Newer, absolutely fun to ride, not gonna flick try and flick you off and kill you every time you ride it like the TL, and perfect for commuting with the upright style.
Easy.
Prolly also has a bit of warranty left on it.

buy the TL. They are one of the greatest bikes out there, despite the bad press when they were released. They aren't the greatest handling or fastest bike out there, but they are a shitload of FUN! Everyone I know who had one has regretted selling it :(

Good luck to you.

Hey can people who have owned a TL tell me how many K's they get to a tank, before the fuel light comes on?
Last night i was a bit disappointed at the light coming on after a measly 160kms. I wasnt riding that hard.
The dude I bought it off said 200 outta a tank easy.

Yep, full suspension adjustment, but every setting on the rear will be too stiff.
Congrats on the TL, you'll love it.

glad you got the TL, even more glad its a '99..the year they fixed most of the issues. handling is a bit heavy yeh but you *CAN* drain some oil out of the dampener to lighten it, or bin it altogether (doesn't entirely change the handling unless you ride like a total twat), only british and yank insurance companies bite you if you crash it without the steering damper.
160kms sounds a bit odd.. you sure it was a FULL tank? they benefit from filling then rocking from side to side to fill any voids in the tank, then continuing to fill. i get 200kms out of mine easy, even with the aftermarket pipes, even at 140km/h on the open road (ignore that, mr. plod). check final gearing - i think i may be geared up, tillers are often geared down to suck those extra horsies out of the bottom revs.
in any case, i'm glad you bought it. don't listen to the people who say its a dangerous, heavy, bad handling bike. these people have most likely never even sat on one much less been for a blast.
welcome to the club..its much cooler being a TLS rider than a harley rider..

Not sure how mechanical you are Morcs, but as I am not so hot in that dept. I usually get a 'new' (to me anyway) bike fully serviced. I add the cost to the purchase price and its always worth it. Getting the carbs balanced can really help fuel economy as well. If a bike feels like it is running pretty good, you would be suprised how much better it can be after the service, esp. if you have just stepped up to the power of the TL from your old 400.

I got the TRE done, and now im getting 200km before fuel light comes on.
I think it improved as Im using it often (old owner didnt use it that much), and the TRE.
I got some crash bungs today... They are Huuuuuge, white... and Hidious!

TLS FTW!
I only find the handling heavy now with a pillion, otherwise I can dance through the cats eyes whilst lane splitting with ease.
I went up 1 tooth on the rear after having the chain and sprockets done (made a huge difference to the feel of the power delivery.
But as Ive said before, it goes like a freight train on meth. Can idle along in 3rd, doing 50kph@3k rpm, crack the throttle open and pin it, goes straight up to 180@10k rpm, then change, and it just keeps going, past 250...
The power is perfectly managable. I have no idea why people made such a fuss about them.

because the world is full of people who have to complain about something, no matter how pathetic..yeh i'm terribly happy with mine too, owned it for 3 weeks yesterday!
i think all the grumbling and griping came down to the original model's overpowered engine (test models were supposed to be putting out something near to 130bhp, translates to 110Nm at the wheel) odd suspension set up and lack of steering damper, its funny when you go back though as there were only really a few complaints about it, lots of biker mags rated it right up there - with the right adjustments to the suspension settings, lets not forget its a purpose-built race bike - but you only ever hear the bad ones.
my brother stressed at me (my brother who has never been on any bike bigger than a 250 and has crashed 90% of the vehicles hes owned) when i told him i was getting a TL. just shows how far a bad word can get..
