I'm contemplating something quite different for a variety of reasons, but mainly for comfort and survival. You see, I've become quite a menace on the Brutale and with a couple of years under my belt, I've been riding cocky lately and while I haven't binned yet, it's only a matter of time I'm sure. On the comfort front, sure the Brutale is more pleasant that a sprotsbike but only just. Also two up on a cruiser is a big plus.
Sure, you can own 2 bikes but you will always have a favourite so I'm thinking of selling both bikes (cause I'm good at that) and buying a Nightrod Special with some extra bits, heck even panniers for touring. Oh what luxury.
So there.

Motorcycle Daily think it's cool, but uncomfortable (http://www.motorcycledaily.com/07august06_vrods.htm).
Have you ridden V-Rods? I haven't, but the ergonomics have always looked decidedly 'form over function' to me. I'd be interested to hear your comments; obligatory dwarf jokes aside, we're not far apart in bike fit dimensions.
Are you sure you wouldn't be happier with a Screamin' Turkey'd-up Fat Bob?
Edit: And, two-up on a V-Rod?

having a sports or more sports orinted bike for having fun and then a cruiser in the garage, is good, for when you just wanna cruise around, yes have down sides but have upsides, as all bikes.
Total different type/style of riding, but still fun none the less.
If ya head down this path finn, would pay to keep one of the current sporter bike and get a cruiser of some kind for the touring, stuff

I dunno, eh.
It's taken me a little while to wrap my head around the fact that it's all about maximum joy on two wheels. Speed is only a little part of that. I, f'rinstance, reckon that I have more fun on a wheezy old 1340 Dyna than I do on an '07 R1.
And there's something special about having a bike that's your bike, bought with the new bike smell still on it and customised to your liking. A multi-bike garage just dilutes that specialness.

Agree but I feel that a change is in order. There's a new Brutale 1078R ? coming out later in the year so if I think I am missing out on something, I could always dive in again.

You must ride em before you decide mate,I found the night rod a Damn good bike but the nrod special awful, less willing to turn(fatter rear) a stretch to the bars and a stretch to the foot pegs.one or tother is fine but both = major discomfort on even short rides. special looks mighty fine but the standard rod of the night is a much better bike. IN MY OPINION.
Good luck though,It's great to try somat different and both the above have stonkin engines/gearboxes.:niceone:

Mmmmm! If'n yuse serious... and to be honest your rep is more along the major p/t lines most times... you'd find cruiserdom very different, though if you've ridden a cruiser you'll know that.
For long distance two-up, I can heartily recommend looking at the Boulevard, okay it may not have cachet of a Harley, but they are real stylish and non-biking onlookers never ask what brand it is, they just wander over and admire it! :niceone:Also, if you decide on a whim to go for a ride around the South Island, you just gas it up and go, knowing you'll get anywhere and back without having to think about reliability.:ride:

No, not at all, I know AMPS could show you a number of Harley's with huge mileages, it's just that the Jappa's over the last 3 decades or so have built such a reputation for reliability that it goes without question. I don't even check the radiator between services, though I admit to occaisionally checking the oil level, not that it's ever used any...
Personally I like Harley's and want a 1200 Sporty, but dollar for dollar, my C50T at under $15k on the road, comes with all the fruit including genuine Kentucky Drive bags and Givi backrest, and it's so good looking it fools everyone who isn't up to the play with bikes. It gets mistaken often for a Harley, and every single person who's seen it has loved it and admired it!

There's something seriously wrong with that.
It seems the Boulevard is better in almost every way than the Harley, apart from maybe wank factor.
Shouldn't a bike be judged on its own merits, rather than image or 'cachet'?
Maybe that's why you've got people buying and riding bikes like the NightCart Special, even though it's expensive, uncomfortable, lacks ground clearance, and whatnot.
I guess you don't need reliability, comfort, handling and that sort of thing if your bike's an expensive two-wheeled posing pouch.

Yeah, but who ever said buying a bike was about logic and reason? It's about feelings, and if you feel good and love riding your bike, who really cares if it's not the best handler, or goes a click faster, brakes a touch harder, and beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder.
However, I reckon my bike is a real pose machine regardless of brand - the fact that it's also a practical riding machine in its own right is a bonus. Of course I chose the Boulevard because it fitted us both and rode and handled so well I don't miss the GSX-F! As for a chick magnet, well the Missus loves it too!

I agree that the jappas have reliability , thats why there are not many restored ones around they wore the fuckers out. Whereas bears stuff shit it self before it was stuffed so there is heaps of restorable stuff around. BUT look at the evolution of the Jappa over 30 years and look at the changes to harley over 30 years the basic image is that there hasn't been a lot of evolution. It's all about nostalgia, ferk I'd love to have a 30 year old electaglide. Don't think I'd fang it up the hillclimb at the kiwi, like I would an old jappa tho.

Refer posts 18 and 21...:bleh: The "real thing" may be great for the name and pose factor, but if you want a bike to ride, my C50T was more than a match for the group of 1340 Softail, 1450 Dyna Low Rider, 1600 Softail on our last group ride through the Waipoua Forest loop. The only bike that bettered me was my Bro-in-Law's C90 and we were all two-up. In flat acceleration, the 1600 and the C90 could pull away, but the 1340 could only match my little 805. (And that's staying in top, if I wanted real acceleration I changed down!) :innocent: PS. We weren't racing each other, just enjoying the ride!

It's generally acknowledged that the old 1340 engine was a ridiculously underpowered wheezebucket.
As you say, the newer Big Twins go a lot better.
Certainly Harleys offer their bikes at a much higher price point than the metric cruisers, but if one considers the motorcycles without regard to cost, they do still make the nicest bikes.

They do, but they still don't go around corners as well. Once into the Forest the two Suzuki's just walked away from the Harley's without even trying. I've often said I'd like a Harley, esp the 1200 Sport, can't really say why, there's just something about their style and sound,I guess.

Too many generalisations here me thinks :-) many of us have owned harleys as well as jappa's (and in fact british eyeteye etc), and still prefer Jappa's, BUT that isnt to say we dont like harleys and if I had enough moolah to spare on bikes I would have 5 or six bikes in the garage, one probably a harley :-) but for all the things I want out of a bike a jappa is the best for most of what I want. its comfortable, reliable, handles like a dream, tons of grunt and good looks to boot. yes Ive enjoyed Harleys, but I enjoy Jappa's just as much with a lot less hassle.. in the end its whatever spins your wheels and a Harley / Guzzie / Honda / Suzuki is no more, or no less. they atre all great machines in their own right.

I never understood cruisers until I rode a few and then it made sense..it matches my style of riding..something like an R1 or Gixxer would be wasted on me..I dont ride that fast and prefer to cruise along...
C50 Boulevard..very nice bike indeed and those who own them seem to love them as much as I love my Harley but thats the same with any bike owner I am sure..otherwise why own the bike?????

i took a 'sale on behalf' brutale for a demo a while back: it had original tyres on, 6000km and still had 2" wide chicken strips both sides.
the suspension was set up by a drunk and it handled like crap
That dont sound right to me. The original tyres are super corsa pro's. Most people seem to only get up to 3000km out of them and Finn wore his out by going too fast in the straights as per pics. DMNTD has got one and came from a KTM thing and he's happy.

Not yet my friend, it's a mates bike. We were about 150k's into a 500k ride last weekend when I noticed it. I didn't tell him cause he was slow enough to start with and I didn't want him to slow down any more. I kept an eye on it though. It's a VROD.

Settle, I'll be keeping the MV. May even get the bigger displacement Brutale when it comes out. Currently looking at getting a Harley from the US since there's never any stock in NZ.

The new bike arrived in a container on Sunday. It's now at the freight forwarder awaiting inspection from MAF... Great. It only takes 2 weeks to ship from the US and I'm sure it'll take longer before I get to ride it.
I WANT IT NOW. I DON'T WANT TO WAIT. I SPEND MY ENTIRE LIFE WAITING FOR PEOPLE TO DO STUFF. NEW ZEALAND IS HOPELESS WITH STUFF LIKE THIS.

Assembly? It's a Harley man. I'll just open the crate, chuck in a raw steak and it'll be ready to go.

I get the bike tomorrow, so say your final goodbye to Mr Nice Guy. From tomorrow I'll be a HD owner. Friends, neighbours, car drivers, police, small children and Colapop will quiver in my presence.
You have been warned. Farewell friends.
P.S. Are there protectors you can get for gear change wear on boots? I've got a lovely pair of Prada's and I don't want them getting scuffed.

Absolutely fabulous! Have you thought of hiring a chauffeur? That way you could keep the Pradas on the pillion pegs - no nasty scuff marks.
Nobody will think you're gay. Much

Wouldn't worry too much about your Pradas Finn, it's nearly winter ... Time for all good Hardlies to begin their annual hibernation. :msn-wink:

Interesting note - most of the V Rods I see still have stock pipes - unlike other HD's - weird.

Actually I got it though Kerry at Motohaus. A colleague of his (another Kerry) imports quite a few bikes from all over. He organised everything so it was really easy.
PM me for the number if you're ever thinking of changing (notice I didn't say upgrading? Upgrading is what jappers do once a year). Yesterday, they even had 2 2008 Rockers in stock!
Considering a new Night Rod Special is $US16,000 ($NZ20,000) +$2500 GST + $1000 freight +350 ORC + NO WAIT!!! Why wouldn't you?
A mate imported a Harley from the US a year ago. It's really easy and I would have done it myself but Kerry had one on the way so I grabbed it.

i've bought 3 bikes from the kerrys at motohaus, and may buy another in the next couple of weeks (after the buell got stolen, broken and burnt) and i have to say that i've never had better service. nothing is ever a problem, and they stand behind what they sell.

I thought they made bikes. Well, motors, apparently, since they're The Motor Company.
I bet their jeans (and undies and perfume and biker patches and lunchoboxes and other assorted dross) are made by other factories or sweatshops in the Philipines.

Ack Shirley, I have.
A gurrrlll I used to sit next to in my old job had a Sportster, and was really into Harleys, as was her husband, who had two. Or three.
Gurrrlllie even had an HD handbag (it actually looked like a tool bag). Of course, I teased her about it, but she knew how OTT the whole thing was. She wasn't entirely one-eyed about Harleys though - she had some very pointed things to say about crap design of some things, reliability, etc.
