View Full Version : Coro loop on a cruiser or large sports tourer?

Not that I ride a cruiser or do the Coro loop, but I've noticed the bikes frequenting this ride are more of the sporty variety.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm interested to know why I don't see many threads about the Goldwing club (for example) going for a blast around the Coro.

Because the coro loop is made up of tight corners and perfect road serface (mostly) which cruisers do not need to thrash thir mashine.

I'd love to do the Coro loop on a cruiser. Any cruiser riders out there who want to meet and swap with a GSX1400 for the day?

No don't see much on the cruiser front round there, Though I have seen them now and again just not in big groups.
Would be a good day out, make one slow down and take in some of those magnificent views.

What views?

A few cruiser riders i know complain about scraping bits going through the tight twisties over the hill.....

On our loop on Wednesday we saw a couple out there.

They were doing quite well, but the ground clearance they had was shocking.

Id hate to do a loop on a cruiser tbh, some parts of the road are just too tight for bikes like that.

That is a crusier, you wally :bleh:

Certain bits are exceedingly tight and twisty. I'd guess you'd be getting the shits even on a 1000cc sprotsbike through those particular bits, let alone a long-wheelbase cruiser. I'd love to try an RG50 or NSR50 through some sections.

Cruisers aren't in complete absence, however, I just don't think so many of them do the whole lot. There's some stunning open road there, but there's a lot of road that just isn't very cruisy. Not so appealing to your average cruiser out for a sunny Sunday ride. I know plenty of cruiser riders that would enjoy doing the whole thing, though. I'm sure there's many floorboard-scrapers on KB who would be the same.

Because cruiser and touring bike riders don't feel the need to skite about how they did the coroloop 3 seconds faster than the last time. To us the coro loop is just another road like all the others in NZ. To sports bike riders it's Philip Island. I rode the coro loop a few weeks back did the 309 and back from Coroglen to Tapu but didn't need to write a post about it??

If you re-read the OP, you'll note that it's not about crusier riders posting regarding the Coro loop, it's about not seeing any crusiers out and about on those roads.

Don't be so prickly.

Clubs organise rides via threads on internet forums.

The point of the OP was that no, there are not, in fact, many cruiser riders out on the Coro loop, as a general rule.

I've noticed the same thing when I ride there.

To sports bike riders it's Philip Island.

This is definitely an attitude I've noticed and for many it's the only place to go. The repetitiveness of doing the same ride is what made me think I never see cruiser/sport tourer riders doing that particular route. I guess it's the difference between checking out scenery and going for a blat.

The Coro loop is heaven on earth and if the sight of road signs warning of many corners to come doesn't get the hair on the back of your neck rising it's time to hop back in the car:yes:
I actually like the idea of a fang round the Loop on a cruiser cause it would be fun at a lot lower speed and therefor a better chance of keeping my licence.

You raise a valid point. I've just not seen too many riders with the urge to keep their licences!

I'd say the Goldwing group eg (which isn't a cruiser) can't be arsed with the KB Sprotsbike Power Rangers any more.

Theres squillions out there.

I did my Fat Boy test around Corro. One of the best circuits I've done.
The best one included the dirt on the Buell.

Different strokes for different folks and horses for courses and all that. Been around the loop countless times on Hayabusa, dualsport (the back road way) and my 25 year old (handle and scrape way worse than any cruiser) 1100. Had a blast on every one of them, riding the twisties, taking in the scenery, big rooster tails in the gravel and enjoying good coffee and company. Aint that what riding a bike is all about..?

Saw a few 'big bikes' when I was down there, the faithful ZX11 can handle the tight twisties just dandy...

Only thing that got me was seeing a sign saying "15kmph corner" :gob: - lets just say I took a double take!! Was no problem - the only problem I had was entering my route in 'backwards' and my satnav telling me to do a u-turn the whole way around!!!

And you haven't noticed adventure bikes out there either? They were probably doing 309 or the Tapu road as you went flying past.I haven't done it much since they sealed the Whitianga road to Coromandel.Once they made it a sealed loop the traffic went up and it was like being in Auckland.

Last outing on the loop was Waitangi day, and certainly saw a few Harleys and 2 up bikes (and of course my bike is more tourer than sprot).

I must have done the loop 20+ times now - still learning and enjoying. It really is a fabulous piece of road (that requires the appropriate amount of respect).

Road was sweet on Wednesday, apart from some non-sign posted grit just south of Whangamata.

Umm, I reckon my GSX1400 could be termed a large sports tourer and IMHO it's designed for the Coro loop. Twisties, ohhhh, ohhhh and ooohhh..... it loves them and so do I. The Coro hill and over from Tairua to Whitianga is just awesome on the 1400. It thrives on the tight stuff and yep, you get to pirouette on the sharper corners but man it;s so much fun. :)

Are you really that stupid or do you just like to pretend cause it's the 'cool' thing to do in NZ?

Coro loop is good fun on a cruiser. So what if I have to take corners slower than warp 9. I'de be there quite often if the bikes were working and I had money.

It's crazy fun on the VMax as well.

Noticed a bunch of Gold Wings, HD's and those funny BMW cruisers today on my way out of here to watch the classics at Puke. I'm sure those folk all did well and had a great day- several thousand Maui campervans seem to cope just fine.
Mind you- now the hols are over there are a few bald stony bits being opened up on the hill between Kopu and Tairua, so if you love your paintwork and forks, go the other way.

I've pootled all round those roads on the Uberpharter. I don't know if that classes as a sports tourer (von Klunken refuses to respond to any designation other than schnell-panzer) but it's certainly *large*

Why would one suppose that crusiers or sports tourers (large or otherwise) would have any problems?

In fact, those sort of roads are exactly what tourers are built for, and they are right in their element - while sprotsbikes are not and keep complaining about the quality of the roads.
