View Full Version : Hyosung 250 chains and sprockets?

How many Ks have rider got before they had to replace their chains and sprockets.
After my last service they said I was getting to the point where it needed to be done, and I'd done 8000 K's
I've got not idea if this is normal or not...I probably haven't been doing enough maintenence, as for the first 4000Ks I didn't even know I had to lube the chain at all.
I've been looking at the chain tension...but haven't adjusted it ever cause it never seems that loose (based on the youtube instructional vids I've seen)
So how long should they last?
When I get them replaced is it worth upgrading the parts as well?

The OEM chain & sprockets aren't that flash and aren't set up properly to start with from the factory :oi-grr:
I assembled a GV250 Aquilia yesterday and to set the chain tension to the right amount of deflection had to adjust it to just over half of the allowable adjustment on the tensioners  so by the time the chain beds in there's going to be stuff all adjustment left
GT250s aren't as bad for some reason for this.
You could get a link removed from the existing chain to save yourself some coin instead of replacing the chain or if you intend keeping the bike for a reasonable length of time throw a chain & sprocket kit at it, something along the lines of a RK chain & PBR sprocket kit would be adequate and are readily available.

What sort of prices do these cost.
The shop mentioned it would be something like
$30 for a front sprocket
$120 for a rear sprocket
$120 for a chain
Just having a look at cycltreads online catalogue, and these prices seem about the same as what I see on there.

:shit: ya what??? geesh those a hellish sprockets then
Try closer to $150-180ish for a complete set Chain & both Sprockets
individually a front sprocket is between $15-20, the rear about $50ish and the price of the chain is about right

I had my chain replaced at 12000k's. I've now done 15000k's and the sprockets are still all good. Make sure you don't tension the chain to tight. Its better for it to be loose than to tight.

I replaced the Hyo chain at 11600k and then again at 36000k, I have now done 58000k and it is probably going to be replaced at next service
Sprockets changed at 36000k

Based on some of this I might have to get a second opinion.

That's fucking nasty man - my rear sprocket is only $45, front $20, all up including chain a nice round $200.

My chain was in a right state by about 12000kms. Due to circumstances i didnt get it replaced for another 5000's k's or so (which was actually only about 4 weeks later) and it made the world of difference. For the record the chain was $115 for me also.

Are Hyo GT250R chains/sprockets noisey? I know I need to change mine (11k) but I have noticed that a number of Hyo's seem to have noisey transmission/chains? Anyone else notice this?
Also does anyone have a good recommendation for aftermarket sprockets and chain? I am keen to upgrade to try and get longer life out of these components.
Cheers

Cycletreads in Auckland do a deal where you can get an X-ring chain and front and rear sprocket set for $249. From what I gather I think they do postage as well. I have had this done and I don't regret it for a second - chain is good and sprockets seem solid.

The reason the chains are noisey is because some replacement/aftermarket sprockets dont have a rubber damper (sp?) on the front sprocket. I just had my chain and sprockets replaced literally 1/2 an hour ago :2thumbsup, it was $200 for the RK chain and 2 PBR sprockets plus $80 to have them put on.
The PBR sprockets that come stock on the Hyo's are fine usually. Its just the bitch of a chain that seems to destroy them :angry2: even George from Motorcycle docs said that the chains are real shite and even if you do maintatin them well they still wont last as long as most others.

Near 10K for the chain which was done at my recommendation. Still on the same sprockets as I dont think they need replacing yet.

I've just done 10,000 k's on my GT250R and haven't replaced either chain or sprockets yet. My son, however, has replaced his chain on his GT250R probably at about 5000k's or so. We regularly use chain wax on our chains.

So what's better? chain wax or lube?? i heard its the same just that wax dries faster

Dunno. I was told wax was best and have been using that from day one, but hubby prefers to use an automatic chain oiler. Personal preference, I think...

I dont trust those. ... haha and its much cheaper to do buy urself,
that way, i can save money for stuff like overhauling my front brakes cause the pistons rusted and seized up.. . .:bash:

How did that happen, Hiflyer? Did you just leave the bike out in the rain too often or something?

Na ive got a cover and cleaned my discs etc, the mechanic (george from motorcycle docs's great guy actually) said that even if i hadnt cleaned them they still shouldnt have seized up. . . especially after only 12000kms
apparently it wasnt my faut and its shoddy parts, which i dont understand cos havent suzuki and hyosung been making eachothers parts for years now?
but yea im quitepeeved about that but lucky he found it cos thats dangerous man! They were so bad that wen the bike was on its stand you couldnt spin the front wheel freely

That is lucky. I've had a few issues with mine too, such as the inner header pipe splitting and making this horrible rattling noise. I think it's a bit of a combination of some bike parts just being defective and the overall bike being that much cheaper than others and therefore not as good.
Have you ridden any other bikes? I took my flatmates Suzuki Bandit 1200 out for a bit of a ride and I couldn't believe how much better everything on it was than the Hyo. Brakes, clutch, gears, everything just seemed so much smoother and engineered so much better.

yea ive ridden 2 other bikes, a 1999 250 bandit and my uncles 199? duc monster 696 (but that was just down the road and back)
and the bandit wasnt that much better, just noticed that the gears just clicked in2 place rather than the CLUNK :bash: on my hyo
and the Duc was awesome ! i want one! Sooo smooth and generally all round a better bike. and of course theres the speed compared to a 250. luckily the brembo's were enough to stop, and also scare the crap outta me haha.
but yes the Hyo's have a long way to go quality wise, could be faulty parts (or lack of a quality supervision team haha) or maybe theyre just buying the cheaper parts to make the bike cheap? I dunno but the definatly have a good base to start on.

just remember that the 250's are made to be cheap and nasty. they are developed for a price point not to be awesome.

12,000ks on my original Hyo OEM chain and I've got several tight links, time to replace, the sprockets seem fine though.
The dealer agrees the stock chains are pretty poor and if you getting more than 8000ks out of them your doing well.

well i guess we did awesome! haha
and yea 250's arent the best obviously but i think some of the quality issues are with new bikers like myself not knowing exactly what to do maintinence wise. but hey better to make mistakes on bikes that cant reach 150 easily than to d it on a bike that goes 150 in 2nd gear. . . .

I just put a D.I.D O ring chain on and it's made heaps of difference the drive train is so much quieter and smoother should have done this a long time ago.

I have an X-ring chain on the bike now, the old one used to make this rattling noise if you pulled the clutch in and just coasted along. Not the case anymore thankfully.
