Well I just completed by first Coro Loop and couldn't help wonder how many people have come to greif on this world class ride. I rode away unscathed but other on the ride werent so lucky.
Lets hear your stories and pay respect to all the bikes lost on this loop, RIP.

Done 4000kms all up around the Corromandel and had my first real bin around there today, hit a patch of slick seal and lowsided at about 50-60kms, only a few scratches on the bike, sprained thumb is all the damage to me.
Now seen 5 bikes down around there besides mine. 2 serious and 3 minor accidents.

The Coromandel has some fne roads for riding. As a race track its not good at all. Most of the motorcycle use is as a race track. The result is inevitable.
'
Gotta go , I need to brew another batch of Gene-O-Kleen, "Evolution you can see". If this fine weather continues as forecast, there'll be lots needed.

Yea, had all my fun over the Corromandel hill, then just taking it easy after Whangamata, hit some slick seal and I'm in the bushes, was too relaxed at that stage.
All the other guys did really good today, was great been tail end charlie for a while and just enjoying the ride with some slower riders.

Fitting Tributes Guys
I have been around the (full) Coro Loop three times now safely.
Last time around was back in the end of 2005 or early 2006
On that last time, I got stung on my right wrist by a very nasty bee in Whitianga and had to ride all the way home with the wrist hurting like hell.
I have also ridden the Coro Loop when it was also such a hot day that the tar was melted and damned dangerous to ride on. Everyone rode slow and carefully throu that. Some sportbikes had tar all over their tyres..... that it ruined the tyres. I rode up in the high centre part of the road which was interesting. I wouldn't want to ride in melted tar like that again.
It was on one of those three times around the Coro Loop that I rode with LooseBruce.....
I have/had ridden with Bruce on other occassions.

Its not the loop. The loop is a place where things could and can happen, and it can happen anywhere too.
There are more crashes there, why? It is people's riding. The loop is not as forgiving as your local street or backroad. People who ride at their limit or close to their limits are more likely to come to grief.
I have started riding the loop from the 1st day I joined KB. In fact it was my 1st ride and 1st KB ride, on my VTR250 with 50km's on the clock. With LB and Death... / Two Smoke. That was almost 3 years ago. I have ridden the loop over 50 times in the last few years yet I have not came to grief. Where is the logic in that.
As I say its not the loop, its the riding.

it is also the hype, makes people think that it is special and they can try that stuff on inside its limits. I almost went down because of it, and it was only words that sidecar bob gave me that stoped me pushing

The number of inexperienced riders is the reason I don't do the loop on the weekends anymore. Last time I went was a Wednesday arvo.
I'll ride it alone or with someone I know very very well and can trust them with my life.
What I don't get is the attitude. These are public roads. Every rider should ride with attitude they are going to come home in one piece, even if it means not going hard out. If you didn't get your dream lap, so what? It gives you an excuse to come back another day.

Fella, nobody goes with a "fucking huge grin" on their face. You go in a world of pain and confusion and regret:
"Is that my mangled arm over there by that car? Fuck I can't breathe! Waddaya mean take it easy, I can't take it easy when my mouth keeps filling with blood?! Why are they looking at me like that? Is that my bike revving fit to burst, bouncing against the limiter? aaaah quiet, thank god, except for the lady screaming, I mean screaming at her kids to "stay in the fucking car!".....uurgh, I can feel the bones in my chest grating together....fuck it hurts, man...no I mean it really hurts like somebody is twisting a huge knife in my chest....funny, my shoulder doesn't hurt at all...I can feel Davo pressing his favourite tee shirt against the ragged stump where my arm used to be but that's about it....blood everywhere...is that all mine?....the poor bugger is crying...I want to thank him, tell him I'm sorry but I just can't seem to take a breathe....oh man I...just....can't...seem...to get...any...air...fading, feel like I'm falling all over again......voices......screaming......going....... .going......................"gone
SM, try holding half your mates face on as he's lying on the side of the road, try having to ride home when your broken mate has just been loaded into an ambulance (or worse, dead) and your whole body is still shaking no matter how many shuddering deep breathes you try and take, try telling him as he's lying there that everything's ok when you know damn well that the ambo's are 20 minutes away and there's already more blood than you've seen in your life leaking over the road. Try dialling a mobile phone to make that call to his missus when you can't stop shaking enough to read/jab the numbers not having a clue what to say and your mouth feels like the bottom of a parrots cage.
I wonder where your "fucking huge grin" would be then....I wonder if you'd be grinning if you were the one lying broken on the road......
I don't really wonder, 'cos I know for a fact you'd be crying and snivelling and praying/begging just like the rest of us and you'd do anything, absolutely anything at all if you could only turn back the clock.
But hey, you don't have to listen to people like me spruiking on, you can just keep riding as you are and find out for yourself.......

never been on the loop
if I ever go to Auckland I will do it
Sounds to me like a road where Pace not race would be more enjoyable
I enjoy the twistys bits over, down and around hills as much as anybody else
But Pace myself rather than try and go as fast as possibile...
I think thats more fun, more relaxing,
Corro loop sounds like a ride I will enjoy one day
I guess there are similar roads down here on the mainland
Enjoy a hot pace....dont die in the race

Scene of accidents aside there is nothing worse than a visit from the police in the middle of the night that starts with "Sir, I am sorry to inform you ........"
Skiddy and I have crossed threads more than I like recently and although I really want to shake my head and walk away I pity the poor cop who is on duty on the day that is coming who has to give a speech that can only be read off a script. There is a RIP thread coming for skiddy. I have no doubt at all about it. His "friends" are far too busy defending his "illness" to give him a slap round the ears and let him know that this stuff is not ok.
I can only hope that no one else gets taken out at the same time.

Indeed - I do wish some would get a bucket or just take thier bikes to a damn track and go racing...
SM has x-ray vision though and scans THROUGH the rock wall while rounding 45km/h bends at 140km/h.

but listen to what he is saying.
riders from one to another......
"ya knee sliders are clean"
"got your knee down yet?"
"look at the size of ya chicken strips!"
words of encouragement?
i have heard these comments from many riders. and some that have written on here.
reading this thread i look back and think shit ive said things in the past too. as a joke but did anyone take it seriously?
carefull what we say out there, even to the younger or more impressionable ones.

I can only hope that no one else gets taken out at the same time.

I truely do apologize in advance and struggling to post the following because of two reasons.
1. I never knew them
2. it is really bad to speak ill of the passed.
BUT
With all due respect the comments come from someone who is now dead.
I dont care how good you think you are. If you are wrong on the road the consequences are often fatal.
I do hear what you are saying though. In our small group we kid around. Someone will show up at a stop after a challenging set of twisties and no doubt someone will pipe up with "where you been, stop for a coffee or something?"
But it really is in good humour and it is different. We have a select core group and those who have survived in the group are those who are solid, safe riders. There has been a few come and go over time but those with egos bigger than their skillset dont last long in our group. I like it like that and hope it stays that way.
I will also qualify this by saying that there has been bins on our rides from time to time. But it is never ok. Sure you want to make sure the rider is ok but anyone who bins on one of our rides will soon know that unless it was a lightening strike or act of alien then it is not ok and they better take a look at what they were doing and change something or they simply are not welcome. I have not and will never apologise for this.
I am not a saint either. I have been told off for my riding from time to time and feel priviliaged to ride with a group that although of my repuation for being egotistical my fellow riders have no bones about calling me out and I respect them more for it.

Being told i was leaving black lines out of corners was a pretty cool feeling, and the feeling of getting 'respect' was unbeatable... then I let it go to my head and put myself and my bike in a tree.
Missed hitting a tree head on by about 20cm - that would've surely put me in a wheel chair, the tree certainly didnt move when my bike hit it.
Slowed down quite a bit from then on, i've been back to Coro since, but respect it for what it is. The race track is at Taupo, not Thames.
Nothing beats riding with a whole lot in reserve, riding smoothly through the corners trying to link up all the lines for one fluid pass, and then arriving home in one piece without having to pull anyone out of a ditch.

The coro loop is a wonderful piece of road but, like many NZ roads, it'll bite you in the arse if you're complacent.
I've read here that some think they 'know' every corner and are therefore able to knee down everywhere etc.
Frankly that's bullshit. The Isle of Mann is about a quarter the length and even the most experienced racers say you can never really learn it completely. Joey Dunlop, THE most experienced rider on it was killed by it.
Roads change with temperature, moisture and use as well as the obvious stuff like road works and gravel etc. To think you 'know' the coro absolutely and can ride it fast with impunity, is to sign your own death warrant with no fixed date.
my 'stye' on the road is to go in less than hard unless i can see ALL the way around the corner and come out hard as long as i can see the road.
late braking stuff on our highways will look great until that oil slick, gravel, bump or wet patch catches you out half way in and you highside it.
save the 10 tenths for the racetrack and live to be an old rider

I agree with many others that this should be manditory reading for all new bikers. I bet if they read this or showed some pics at the basic training there wouldnt be as many arse holes like skidmark around on the roads giving bikers a bad name.
and to skidmark: just cus you want to be a prick on the roads dont forget your putting the rest of us at risk. Its people like you that give bikers a bad reputation as organ doners and fukwitts when really most of us enjoy biking for what it is and respect ourselves and other road users :spanking: your bike should stay in its box, by the sound of it its the best place for it for your safety and ours!!!

Drifting a bit off topic here, but I had a thought on my last trip. When preparing for the Basic Handling Skills, our instructor had a few pictures of what can be done with a bike. What about a few more of what happens when you take the road for a track? Doesn't need to be morbid, just some thought-provoking pictures before sending unskilled riders on the road...

it is also the hype, makes people think that it is special and they can try that stuff on inside its limits. I almost went down because of it, and it was only words that sidecar bob gave me that stoped me pushing
Agreed re the reputation of the Coro, I know when we were living up north and it wasnt right on our doorstep it was portrayed as a race track road to be revered. Also remember, this is an international tourist destination, tourists who in their home country drive on the wrong side of the road, and their natural instinct when they get a scare (aggressive motorcyclists passing at warp speed within inches of them) is to revert to what they naturally know, drive on the wrong side of our roads.
We have ridden the coro a few times now especially since moving to the BOP. Usually if its a big group ride Chris and I both quietly scout the group for the potential riders we believe will most likely bin. Unfortunately, Ive managed to pick a few of them at the pre ride gathering, a talent I would rather not have. And as for my own riding, generally Im a very safe and cautious rider. However, yesterday I pushed it a little harder, and I made a very poor judgment call to overtake another car, worst Ive made and outside of my normal behaviour. I believe I am lucky to be sitting here today, and I know it was close as a good KB friend/rider was behind me and he was unsettled by what he saw.
We all need to respect our roads at all times, and this piece of road especially given the tightness of much of the stretches of road.

I've never ridden the Coro Loop, very much doubt that I ever will.
Why? Because I don't want to be on any road that is treated like a race track by a whole section of the community.
I have read many threads/posts about the Loop on KB and been shocked by the speeds some people claim they attain on a PUBLIC ROAD. That kind of attitude does not belong on a road, take it to the track, and until you can all do that, I choose to stay away.

Agreed re the reputation of the Coro, I know when we were living up north and it wasnt right on our doorstep it was portrayed as a race track road to be revered.
I've seen that attitude as well.
Which makes me wonder how many other race-tracks come complete with tractors, boat trailers, and campervans.

Coro loop,Kaiaua loop,SH16,SH22 - have all become problem roads since they were sealed.I have ridden these roads for years, before they were sealed, after they were sealed, before KB,after KB.Sportsbike riders are an unadventuresome lot, they like perfect roads and don't like them to degenerate into a mess making them turn around and go back.So when word gets out about a nice road they can ride, they flock there. These roads were relatively unknown for many, many years, and even when they were sealed I saw few riders on them, now there are whole groups of riders doing them at speed, muscling cars off the road in their desire to get past and be the fastest in the group....or to just keep up.
I've found other roads now.....

It probably won't win you friends or anything, but hat off to you for saying so! Didn't know the people involved, but every time somebody speaks, or writes about the incident, it's like they were taken before their time through no fault of anybody's etc. The first time somebody told me about it my first thought was 'well somebody fucked up' ............ No disrespect to family or friends, but......................
I'm with you Puddy. Tell it like it is. This is the first time I have heard about actually what did happen on that day and I was riding in that group.
Hard call to lay it out there but at least it might wake a few up. It was a terrible day all around.
Yep, the Coro loop is often called The Coro GP. One of my friends went on his first KB ride on a Coro loop and heaps turned out. Five bins on that one ride and he nearly decided to never go on a another KB ride again. He perservered and has been on many since.
Personally I love those roads and have done the loop around 25 times since getting back into bikes. With the tourists and nutters in cars, it makes for a very high risk run and yes, many motorists seem to swing wide on corners, cut them, end up on your side of the road, but I've had that nearly everywhere I have ridden.
We can never change the fact that riding is a high risk activity no matter how careful you are yourself. Trouble is on a bike, you make a single error on a long ride and it can be your last. You can ride completely perfectly as well but someone in a cage or camper van makes an error and it could be your last ride as well. :(

Took the little scorpio around the loop this weekend. My first time up there. A great ride just best done at a speed that you can enjoy the scenery. Followed an Adventure bike from Whanga to Waihi in the wet. Just hung back and watched and learned how to ride safe in the wet. Whoever it was Thank You for being on the road at that time. Otherwise i think i may have stuggled to read the conditions.

Funny thing is thats what Bruce said, however when we identified the body I didnt notice a grin.
I understand.
Only ever had to attend one dead biker, about 4 years ago.
Looking through his visor - seeing hollow, dull eyes... blood pissing out nose and mouth...
Sure as fuck don't remember thinking that he looked all that peaceful or content.
I can still see his face, as those who have attended other bike/car accidents will their first no doubt.
Good on you Mark, and good luck on attempting to be the worlds first smiling corpse - you'll go down in history.

i can see the coro loop becoming a place i avoid like highway 16 north of auckland
16 generally is a great road. Good seal, reasonably wide and something often over-looked great visibility with open flowing corners. All of this leading onto a nice tight little section towards the end with good grip.
Riders and drivers have died there and many licences lost, but its suitability as a fastish, safe road I believe is high, and certainly safer than the west coast of the coro loop [for instance].
Before I'm flamed no suggestion of 16 as a race track exists, but it's bad reputation is largely due to Police presence not danger level.

I've never had any troubles on the loop, but i respect that its a very technical piece of road, not one to be taken lightly or to play games on. It's a luuurvly road to cruise on. Im not concerned about speed, just about getting that perfectly smooth corner which gives me the grin :D

Going to work last sat morning and heres an accident at Thorntons bay.
2 cages ,going like stink.must of touched each other.
one went on the beach side and rolled about 50 mtrs on the rocks
2 girls inside ..one dead and the other traped inside.
the other car went left and ended up in a very large ditch.
6 occupants. 4 injured. not a pleasant site at 5 am
speed was a large factor here.. not sure about alcahol.
take it easy on these roads..can be dangerous.
5 mins earlier and these two would have gone over top of me.

Dam good reading. Many good and graphic reminders for us ta remember while we are out there enjoying the "thrill" of riding.
As much as Skid's remarks give me the shits, I look at the responses they have triggered, and think:
Without he's BS posts, would we be triggered ta post some of the most poignant posts on riding I have seen here (like http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/sh...4&postcount=30 (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=1419264&postcount=30) )?
I remember another rider here that was once like him. A lot of us were not keen ta ride with him because of it. Still alive, and (far as I know) has improved his riding habits over the years. I can only hope SM will also grow into a real "good" rider one day and really understand what has been posted here, but until then I hope never ta be on the same road the same time as him.

I just popped sm on my ignore list, dunno what the hell it does but it just aggravates me repeating a message over and over. If skidmark learns and does change good for him. If he doesn't, well lets just hope he doesn't hurt someone else. I've never met you skiddy and in person you might be a great guy, but the image you have put across to me *with me being a noob* is that your riding habits are not safe, and that a lot of the time you pose a danger to other road users as well as yourself. I may be wrong but hey thats what i'm getting. No offense but sharpen up. All I hear is that you've lost your license again, your riding a half track bike on the road, constantly speeding etc. I don't know why your so compelled to push so far when it's obvious that a mistake can lead to tragedy on the road. I really hope that you skiddy do not hurt an innocent person or yourself on the road. Nuff said, wise up, theres always time to change, but for fucks sake listen to the experienced people on this site man. Take in what people are saying. Some of the time, the best advice is the one that cuts the most.

Mark - you know jack shit, that is the only thing you have made clear beyond any reasonable doubt. I don't know you in person, I can't comment on your riding, but unless you got a rare flair for irony (see stuff like real ultimate power (http://www.realultimatepower.net/) for an example of what I mean) your posts doesn't leave you much hope.
And for sure - beating you up won't prove anything. Anyway, I didn't see anyone posting any written threats on here. Only one guy saying that he was looking forward to having a chat with you - and I do think you could do with an attitude adjustment.
Oh, and despite how hard you try I don't think you manage to claim :first: on being the most dangerous person on a bike in NZ... but perhaps on KB.

Back to the Coro thread........
Bruce wasn't called LOOSE Bruce for nothing. A stupid way for a really nice guy to go, but, not entirely unexpected. No Mark, you don't want to emulate him!
Oldfart (Bruce), (from conversations I had with people who should know), may well have been stung by a bee, immediately before his accident - it's the only way I can think what happened, happened, because he was usually the last person you would think would make a cock up of that magnitude. He was a GOOD rider, smooth, risk & ego free.
The first KB ride I went, to Whitianga and back, there were 2 bikes destroyed, one by a rider overestimating his abilities whilst underestimating his bikes abilities, and one through not making allowances for crap on the road. Other Coro runs I have seen behaviour that I thought would result in the meat wagon being called hither, good luck being the main saviour.
It's a great road in parts, just better when your ego is firmly packed away!

My experiences with the loop this particular time of year havent been fantastic. 2 reasons. =1)Idiot drivers make me nervous to commit to a corner in case Young billy in his zooom zook WRXHYXGWIZZ has fucked up and overcooked a corner.

LOL!! Doing 90kmph around a 100kmph corner and binning cause some bloody Honda dropped its diesel on the road...well,no one would've had a chance!
Actually DMNTD, the truly accomplished rider utilises superior road craft and flairs their nostrils prior to entering a corner thereby enabling the rider to smell hazards such as diesel some distance prior to contact. This technique enables the rider to deploy suitable countermeasures, in this case, a handful of grit from the jacket pocket or tank bag to the road surface in a timely fashion thereby maintaining traction and composure through the corner..:devil2:
Seriously, Coro is not really any more dangerous than any of the roads that we ride and those who bin there are just as likely to bin anywhere else (bin ambivalent?) where you have a concentrated number of hazards over a relatively short stretch of road. Treat Coro like that and you will be sweet. :2thumbsup

When I did the Coca Cola riding course in 1982 they had a theory evening where they showed slides of what happens if you don't wear the gear. The one I remember the most showed the vertical piece of a jandal lodged firmly in the middle of a foot right in front of the ankle joint. Certainly stopped me riding in anything but proper boots.

I agree! We live just south of one of the blackest bits of road as far as carnage goes. It is an unforgiving bit of highway make no bones about it. We even have cheesecutters and a reduced speed limit to prove it now.
This is a road that I have driven more times than I could ever count, including many years commuting on a bike and only once hit a patch of OMG! WTF! 2 up in the rain. My usual transport is a Scorpio, mate. Does that answer your question?
There's a photo from the trip down the Yungas Road that I'm rather proud of. The group I was with had stopped at a curve and the guide had informed us that there was sheer drop at the road edge of 300 m ("And over here it's 500 m", he said). The photo shows all the members of the group, except one, standing on the edge holding their bikes over the drop. I was the exception, standing against the cliff on the other side of the road. I'm a bit nervous around big drops and there was no way I was going to look over that edge.

last dec the the kopu-hikuai-whanga rd was sheer perfection. perfection all the seal was good, no works and not hot enough to melt.:2thumbsup
there's often pea gravel on the coro-thames section from trucks spilling it on the tight turns for some reason...poohs
last week the kopu-hikuai lower section had big works and the hikuai-whanga was melting
my parents live over there so i ride it all the time -not usually in big groups tho. i've got to say that the holiday season isn't really the best with towed boats taking generous chunks out of the corners. Actually that road writes off a good number of cars so I ride quick but give alot of consideration to the feel of the traffic about and back off unless I can SEE exactly the road surface and road ahead. blindies get more space and less speed.
the dilema with that neck of the woods is...mm to ride..or surf...ride or surf... luckily its flat sea alot so RIIIDDDEEE:2thumbsup

Agree with all the comments on the road not beind dangerous in itself, if not treated as a racetrack. Its a stunning day out though for some nice riding and for views - its why I am in NZ. My profile pic was taken overlooking Cathedral Cove, 5mins from some excellent restaurants. What a fantastic life it is.
Imagine losing all that for trying to prove to someone unspecified that I am the racing man around the loop. No one is timing you. There's no podium. Do trackdays to race. Ride and enjoy it. Enjoy all life has to offer.
As for Skiddy, don't put him on the ignore list. I did 5000ks through the SI over Christmas, inc. all the passes and Buller gorge. I saw 100s of bikes (esp over the road out of Nelson to Picton - what the hell was going on there on Jan 2nd?) and there were a few that were lucky not to be toast - inc. a few on my side of the road I avioded and saved the lives of (did they realise?).
On the whole I reckon the KBers rode responsibly. But there's a lot of SkidMarks out there who never find KB, never learn bike control, and like to "go racing". Skiddy reminds me how many many bikers who never post here probably think. A sobering lesson.
Last weekend for example I spoke to a guy with a GSX-F like mine, but new. Heading off to the Coro - asked if I'd done it. He'd heard it was excellent. He also had no bike licence at all - just bought a bike. Just thought he could ride it. There's many on here who would say that is wrong, but be riding 600s on their L because "they know better". Sure.
As long as I think there might be one of this guy or one skidmark out there on the Coro I'll treat every corner as if they, a campercan or a 4x4 could be coming around it on the wrong side.

Imagine losing all that for trying to prove to someone unspecified that I am the racing man around the loop. No one is timing you. There's no podium. Do trackdays to race. Ride and enjoy it. Enjoy all life has to offer
The trouble is, sometimes, the muse just takes you! The most important thing at the time, is to do this, (or that), stretch of road as quickly as you can!
And nothing! is as fulfilling as successfully dispatching a section of twisties, preferably a section you don't know all that well, with all the skill you can muster.
IMHO, beats track time nearly every time!

True - I've wound it up in the Coro to not-sensible speeds at times. I am a motorbiker after all, not a saint - nor would I claim to be! But although the muse takes me too its always the thought of the idiot round the corner that brings me back down to earth.

Still think about Bruce everyday. Knee down all 3 of the crash site corners for the fella. ride in his memory, he was my idol.
I have never done the full loop....only kopu- whangamata and back to kopu.... and kopu - thames- coromandel town and back to kopu.
never arsed off there yet.
but if i go in a bike crash i want it to be down there.
or on the roads from auckland to kaiaua down the coast...between whitford and clevdon- kaiaua.
At least then ya knowi went with a fucking huge grin on my face.
fave road is whagamata road though. always will be.
Sunny day just let her fly ...140 round the 55's tipped right over knee down wrapping around through the cliffs.....blimin heaven i tell ya!
Until you see :Police:
then speed increases lol.

You are a complete fcukwit!
Loose Bruce and DSS3 do not want you to ride that corner with your knee down at 155 kmh. To do so you are showing NO respect.
Clearly you were not there that day and did not experience the HORRIFIC aftermath of that crash. You did not have to ID one of the deceased in the back of the ambulance.
Show your respect by riding slow, stop at the memorial or give them a wave and look them in the eyes as you pass by!
You Sir do not deserve to ride those 3 corners!

i did not say that exact corner....i go through those corners below the speed limit.....knee down isnt hard.
i know what happened i have read quasi's write up. i ride the corners at slow speed. but stick my knee down, if there was any risk whatsoever of crashing i would not do it.i am going so slow to the point i can knee down the corner coming from the kopu end and pull over and stock in line with the cross without even trying...i always stop for about 20-30 mins...ball my eyes out then continue.
i knew bruce well too.
I used to stand at hell pizza with him for closing time some nights....talk for ages and the time would fly and it was 1am before we knew it. I would give anything to bring him back, but i cant. nobody can.
seriously no bullshit i do not gas it through there.
i know how sacred that site is, to others and myself.
through that part i ride at about 40% of my ability...leaving alot in reserve and at a speed if i come around and there is gravel or something i could save it. i open her up on the rest of the road though, i'm not denying that.
it's my favourite road.
ive said my bit. i obviously gave everybody the wrong impression in the first place, my apologies.

Mark you write things like this a lot - you will have noted how many times people mock you for it. There is a reason - it is totally meaningless when you can't control the environment - bike; road; self; other riders; other traffic; cows; landslips; all variables. On a track day on a well-maintained bike you can control as much as is possible. On the road not much.
This way of thinking will get you killed on the road.
You don't want the priest at your funeral to say "and the funny thing was he still had 70% in reserve when that campervan totalled him".
I believe you had a lot of respect for Loose Bruce, and show that in your own way. But next time you pay homage there think about becoming a better rider than him. That means staying alive. And not causing harm. This is the only and ultimate test of being a good road rider.

So someone who stays at home most of the time and only rides his 125cc farm bike 200m from paddock to paddock is a good road rider?
Don't get me wrong, I'm in no way trying to defend the way SM appears to ride but there's more to road riding than just staying alive.

No, there's much more to it than that. 200m paddock to paddock is not a rider in any meaningful sense at all though and is a deliberately poor example. The ultimate test I said - its the one test you can't fail. And if are 30 yrs riding you are still alive and haven't killed anyone else, I would say there is a reasonable argument that you have useful skills - and being able to take a corner on one wheel probably isn't the most important of these. "There are old rider, bold rider ... etc etc"
I do believe though for the road roadcraft over technical skill is what will keep you alive.

After a bit more thinking I realised that I was thinking about drivers as a whole, including cages. There are plenty of cage drivers that are still alive after decades of driving that could not be said to be good drivers. I think for motorcyclists, however, you are bang on the money. Bikes are definitely less forgiving.

we were talking about this the other day and one comment summed it up quite nicely.
You can do whatever you want on the road as long as you do it delibrately. Even that needs to be qualified. I dont know how many times I have heard of someone in a group thinking someone else is riding dangerously and the rider in question thinking s/he is perfectly safe. If someone thinks you are riding dangerously then you have to think about where that info is coming from and think about if it might be true or not. First step is the check the ego and take a realitly pill and see where they are coming from. I dont know where skiddy gets his percentages from. If he is going round a 55k corner at 155 at 40% then that should mean he should be able to take the same corner at 310k/hr at 80% and still have another fifth in reserve. This makes me think why he is not giving 99% at the track and lapping taupo in 15 seconds.

Well nope don't own a harley never will, just saying I don't treat the road as my personel track when on two wheels, mind you I did creep up to 160km on a straight piece of SH3,after a guy in an altessa zoomed by,got the accord up to the ton and radar beeped, lasted all of 5 seconds and road empty and dry and fine.Funny thing by the time we had gone 10km up the road he was only 3-400 mtr ahead due to cars ahead, and not able to pass safely.
Yep 160km is fast enough on a 20 yr bike, and fast enough to say cheerio to license, that means NO JOB,which means NO HOME,as no dough to pay mortgage, something when you get older could be of benefit.

Don't get caught.
Rule No 2 for speeding.
Don't stop instantly for any reason.
Other than that, go hard.
There are only two reasons for not obeying the above rules.
1 Bad luck
2 Stupidity
The result of not obeying the above rules can be quite serious.
By the sounds of it, statistically, your better off speeding than going into the public health system for surgery where bad luck and stupidity seem to reign.
This ads another dimension to the equasion as, if you broke rule No 2, you are most likely going to be entering the public health system, or the morgue, either way, statistically, your pretty well stuffed.
I worked with serious crash units for 3 years. Serious motorcycle accidents numbered about 7 for those units over those 3 years. Most were caused by bad luck, on the riders part, and a couple through stupidity. 1 was during an organised track race with professional riders.
As for the carnage - not pretty when it does all goes wrong.

Road riding is definitely a different culture down here. We might be all slow but, by god we are good looking........
Haha, brings to mind the classic "Why go so fast when you look so good?"
Must of been the reason why I wanted to get everywhere ASAP when I was driving an old '85 Telstar.

I've only done it once and it is without doubt one of the finest rides in NZ.
It's a ride to enjoy and take in all that it offers.
