my advice stay away from the Scorpio you will out grow it way too fast try a 250 rather than the 150 too but if its what you are comfortable on go for it!:2thumbsup
Curious_AJ
11th February 2008, 22:22
yeah, well, I kind of feel better starting off on something a little less grunty and being 225cc i probably wouldnt grow out of it as fast as the 150... i like to take things slowly... and if it's affordable, i won't feel too bad selling and moving up soon after if I really want to :)

I don't know, if you'd seen one of the guys on a KR150 go around the Corromandel on Saturday, he wasn't at the back with the GN or VTRs, he was right up the front with the more powerful 250s! :headbang:

There may not be too much difference in power between the RGV and the Scorpio. I used to have a KR150 (similar to RGV, but a bit gruntier) and upgraded to the Sherpa (similar engine to the Scorpio, but a bit gruntier), and I don't think there would be much difference in peak power/top speed between them, if anything, the KR might be a bit more powerful.
But the power delivery between the two bikes is incredibly different, the KR was very sedate, unless you wrung it's neck, and the sherpa just keeps delivering similar amounts of power, no matter what you are doing.
I decided that neck-wringing wasn't really my style, and felt I had 'outgrown' the KR. The sherpa doesn't have any more power, but it's more my riding style, and I'm really happy with it.
So, IMHO, the choice between the RGV and Scorpio would probably come down to individual riding style, rather than which bike was more powerful.
Curious_AJ
12th February 2008, 10:56
oh yeah, don't get me wrong.. that's what i'm basing it on more than power really... at the moment I think the more upright scorpio would be better for me but then again, i really have to test them out.

Try your luck finding a vt(spada) or vtr250. The bike that Mat had before he wrote it off. It's very learner friendly, better riding position than Scott's and it will last you until you get your full.

12th February 2008, 12:27
oh, one question for cruiser riders out there that have tried both sports and cruisers... is it very much different when you're legs are extended to the front than crouched like on sports bikes? (yes i'm not using very technical words here)
in some ways I'm having a feeling it would be easier for me to have it that way rather...

okay,... i regret to inform one and all that i didn't pass =( ... long story but i was struggling on the (way too high) honda dirt bike they put me on, so they put me on a scooter to get me used to going round corners without taking feet off the pegs... they took ages to find the bloody key for the thing and by then there was no time for me to do the test (though they didn't tell me that) i was able to go alright on the scooter, and i did the stopping excersises first time perfectly (i hold that as my prize for today!)... anyway, then the others did their test and they passed. once they finished they got me on the big bike again and i was much better, still jerky on the stopping but i was better over all... but no time ot do the test.. so i went home with a slip saying i could pay 50 bucks to come back again... I had the worst dry-mouth during the whole thing and went home feeling like shit to be honest...
i reckon the guy that was helping the instructor and was learning to teach riding was WAY better than the old guy who actually was the teacher!! the old guy just shouted and chewed me up and spat me out like yesterdays news (ans made me want to cry) when the other guy was calm and actually showed happiness when i did something right!
anyway.. i'll be going back at some point to try again... *sigh* oh well try try and try again!!

anywaaaay, the verdict....
I PASSED!!!!! whoppeeee!!! *victory dance on the coffee table!*
I did it on a gn125, WAY better than those darn dirt bikes!!!
although i did have to go through the test twice (Phillip the instructor was so awesome to let 2 of us have the chance!) this was only coz i went outside the last cone on riding the curve, but that's all good because i realised what i did to make me do that, and fixed it the next time!
for any newbies (like me!!) that are reading this and haven't done their BH, go to RIDERSKILLS!!! they're awesome! no one shouts at you and they genuinely want you to pass! very friendly and a much more personal approach to helping you learn, which is way better than someone only concentrating on the people that are able to do things first or second time!! *cough*won't mention name again*cough*.

As much as people trash them coz they're "GN250's" they are a good learners bike! parts are easy to get, easy to work on, easy to reach the ground and easy to maneuver! We had a guy do 2 1/2 thousand k's round the North Island with us on one a couple of weeks ago!! :Punk:
Before you commit to buying something.. do the rounds of all the bikes shops you can chick, have a sit on all sorts of bikes.. brands, styles, colours  etc.. & you'll get a good feel for what you like & what you don't like.. & suddenly you'll sit one one.. & bang.. you'll KNOW, THAT'S your bike!!!!
If you get one privately.. make sure you get it thoroughly checked out first!! if anything looks/feels dodgy, walk away! :niceone:
Enjoy the process & don't be in a hurry.. the right bike for you will come along when it's sposed to! :scooter:

Was there with AJ for both passrite & Riderskills.
Goto passrite if you wanna pay to be shouted at, ride on a tall dirt bike with no neutral light (not very nuce for short people like AJ) inside a building smaller then a tennis court.
The old c*nt at passrite thought he was God's gift to motorcycling and any questions about his methods etc were to be met with anger and aggression.
After AJ dropped it a couple of times he put her on a scooter, which you can't do the test on now (which has changed a few months ago) after they spent about 20mins trying to find the f*cking key for it, wasting AJ's time and money.
While on the other hand,
Riderskills was a far better experience for AJ and myself. From the moment we showed up they were polite and helpful.
They had GN125's for the people to ride (Don't see too many 125 Ginnys anymore!) which were perfect, easy on the throttle and nice and low to the ground.
They had a huge carpark for the riders to buzz around in, which is handy for when they over-shot a corner or what not (as opposed to Passcrap where if you did over-shoot you'd go into a concrete wall).
The instructors gave decent one on one advice etc (i.e running backwards in front of people so they could follow him with their heads through a corner)
They had a guy there who had never been on a bike before and he's up and going in no time! if this guy had been at passrite, he'd have crashed like 4 times.
when it came to the test, they were very clear on the rules and instructions _b
Overall a very good experience at riderskills, far far far better then passcrap.
I would recommend Riderskills anyday to do your basic handling, they also do some one on one rider training on the road using headsets etc.
Thank you heaps Phil & Ian :niceone:

no it's not actually!!... but yes, go for riderskills!!! dooo eeeet!!! lol... and good on yah for going for it! it's actually quite fun when you go into it with a bit of a sense of humor and keep telling yourself things like "you can do it! you're awesome!" and don't forget to egg on your fellow BH buddies that do the course with you, it creates a better atmosphere and you end up having lots of fun and sharing experiences etc :)
have fun on your BH!

Well done AJ, congrats! All you've gotta do now is to go and sit your learners - a much easier task than the BHS test! Hopefully we'll see you on a steed of your very own sometime soon. :niceone:

Good for you. So when you doing the learners? You can get your roadcode online now here (http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/roadcode/index.html) and other helpful learners stuff here (http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/licensing/motorcycle/index.html)
Also you can get a copy of the actual bike questions for $5 from your local LTSA to practice with.
Good luck and congratulations.

Phil from Riderskills was very good. Very earnest, lol. No he did a good job, and put in the extra effort with a middle-aged woman who kept arsing off and eventually got her there. Good gentle, no-pressure introduction. After hearing about Passrite I won't be sending my girlfriend there when I finally persuade her to get started!
Learner's scratch-'n'-win is just common sense and I managed to get 100% very easily. Hadn't done a car licence before either.
Reckon you should check out GiJoe1313's A100!

oooh he has an A100 up for sale?? lol I was looking at those for a little bit a while ago!
and yes, send your gf to riderskills you know you want to lol. ah, yeah i know it's common sense, but it doesnt hurt to read up on stuff like tire depth etc etc. all those silly little questions that can get you off guard.
ps. thanks for the link above the quoted post! the only thing is that they have nothing on bikes!! I looked there earlier today and couldn't find anything.. unless i'm not looking in the right place??

yay!! well done BB!!
yeah, it isn't that easy but you just gotta go and do it until you get there hehe.. yeah I'm going Monday for my learners maybe... but I might wait until the week after when I get paid just for the fact that I went and spent 12.50 on practice questions meaning i'd be over budget if i went and got my licence done before i got paid.... lol...
still saving for that bike though... not long now!!
by the way, who did you do it with?
Edit: would rep you ... buuut... i have to spread it around first... GREEN! (or not so green anymore)

You have to do the basic handling to get the Landtransport Certificate to hand in when you go & get your learners, so either way it's going to cost.
AJ I got all the Questions as well & it only cost me $5, How come yours was so expensive??:bleh:

I paid $50 for the basic handling. $5 for the Questions when I do the theory. The theory will cost as will the licence, but can't remember how much that all is. No doubt around the $80 mark:crybaby:. The government does very well out of the licencing system.:blank:

Dont want to have to study the road code again tho, its been 8 years since i got my car full, Why cant it just be the questions specific to motorbikes :girlfight:

Hi Curious AJ, Hows the riding going since you got your learners?
RiderInBlack took me down to Planet Honda on Tuesday & I took out a CBR125 & then after that a CBF250... Was nervous as hell as it was my first time since doing the balance test. Once I'd had a little play around the railway station car park We decided I was Ok to go out on the road. Doug was awesome, he took Zena & rode a little ahead of me all the way & gave me some good pointers. Loved the 2nd bike & looking forward to a longer ride on the 2nd one as we didn't have time to go the same route as the first one. It felt alot safer & nicer position for me.

going really well, riding all over the place now that my bike's working. hehe... it's my only form of transport now as well as i don't have daddy to give me a lift so i've been doing lots more riding, and it's great! however, sometimes my bike does funny things like having it's battery flat after 2 hours standing with no lights on or anything... it was working all day, then yesterday it decided it was dead when i was set to head off from seeing my dad for 2 hours.. :S weird. but we charged it and all was fine in the end ^_^
up for my risky soon too, if not already, i don't remember how long it's been and am lazy to check. though need to get my full car licence first i think for practical reasons (using car to transport animals etc)
