Hahaha.. I'm not even dreaming of it.

How slow is the slow group and how fast is the medium group?

I figure doing a session in the slow group to learn the track a bit is a good idea and take it from there.

I read somewhere a full tank should be enough. What else do you bring apart from bike/gear/lunch?

the medium group is about 51.3% faster than the slow group and the fast group is about 75.42%faster than the medium group rider vairability also taken into account

its about 2 tanks of gas

Any advice for someone doing their first trackday?

Run slightly lower tyre pressures to get a bit more sidewall flex / faster warm up

Play in your own sandpit

look as far ahead as you can

be smooth and progressive

don't worry about what people think of how fast or slow you are, they don't care... they are too worried about how fast / slow people think they are.....

have fun :D

go in the fast group if you can, in the afternoon say if you are comfortable with the medium group, fast group tends to be smaller with riders taking better lines... you'll learn more

have fun :D

drink plenty of water

have breakfast

How does the extra sidewall flex help? More grip over the bumps when cranked over?

I'm hoping I'm improving heaps through the day. The limiting factor will be how much I trust the tyres and how much feedback I'm getting from them.

kiwifruit

Tyres get up to temp faster.
A good proportion of bins happen because of tyres not up to temp
What sort of tyres are you running?

enigma51

You have to tune them out or you will fall off thats not even a maybe.
I was a few weeks (okay maybe just a week ago) in the slow group testing a bike and the one guy was constantly looking back to see where i was and i did not want to pass him in the corners as he was a nervous rider but his constant looking back almost had him off the track about 4 times in 3 or 4 corners so just blasted past him as soon as i can as i could see him going to fall off but still not the ideal place to past someone in the slow group. So concentrate on your lines and keeping tuned into what you are doing you will see it will be all cool

Just remember there is marshalls on the track and if someone does dangerous passing moves they will be kicked off no questions asked. The rules are strict for a reason and that is for you and everyone else to have a safe and fun day.

I'm on the stock BT-015's still. They seem alright but then I've got nothing to compare them to in the 600 world. People bag them alot though. Should I be worried?

I definitely won't be looking behind me. Can't afford to take my eyes off the track!

I'm more worried about someone going around me and giving me a surprise because I wasn't aware they were coming up on me. Guess that's where the marshalls come in.

Taupo is one of those track that go with your confidence. In the morning she can be slippery but as the day go on she seems to get better grip and so does your confidence.

Im not going to lie to you there will be one or two occasions where you will get a surprise but if your in the slow group the only real passing is allowed on the straights or on the outside as long as it is safe and plenty of room Kiwifruit can confirm but i dont think any passing is allowed in the infield (tight stuff) You will hear people before they pass you and thats the other thing you have to almost ignore as you will want to look back cause it sounds like someone is trying to get pass you as there revs is most likely higher than what they should be on the road

On the day come and have a chat to me or shaun or kiwifruit any one you see having a good time (you will see what i mean) and one of us will take you out in the slow group and show you the lines well our lines at least. Soon soon you will be happier than pig in mud

Did the HRC trackday at Manfeild on Monday with the CBR600 on BT015s. I thought they gave good feel and grip. 30psi front and rear, Suspension set to Seb Carpentier's settings as seen in Superbike Magazine. Although they wore nicely, unlike 014s which I've torn up in the past, I probably wouldn't get 2 trackdays out of 1 set. If it's your first trackday I'd leave the suspension standard, drop the tyre pressures to 30psi, and remove the mirrors!! And go in the slow group!

Can't make it to this one.... be on the HRC South Island Tour. Look forward to the one in early April!!

Yip i find the first thing to get right is the tyre presure

If the bike feels good at the start but shit at the end too soft
if it feels shit at the start but good at the end too hard
if it feels good after 1 or 2 laps and sort of stay the same or just gets better spot on!

Horrible corner...

Not at all. The trick is to figure out how to brake into it and where to turn so that it becomes a single-apex corner. Nothing quite like getting hard on the gas and shooting past all the guys trying desperately to find some more lean angle so they don't run off into the kitty litter at the start of the back straight.

Nice to meet Robertydog.Had brought a "new" front slick off TM for this day, should've asked for the date stamp,it was 4 years old and after 2 sessions it was looking quite unwell.Thought it might have been a set up issue so collared Shaun H(check your keyring next time:whistle:) for some advice(thankyou),bike felt better but tyre wasn't up to any real anger.
Had a great few tussles with a race ZX10,#126 I think, after tyre started shredding just couldn't get the confidence in it to try a pass.

Well I'm utterly knackered... 600km of open road (most in the blackness of night and fog) and 140km of track time in the last 24 hours kinda took it out of me.

:banana::banana::banana::banana:

Great day. Was kinda pre-occupied hanging with a mate and his son (15 years old fanging it on his VTR250) so didn't really get to say hi to anyone. Recognised a few bikes though.

Following the "lines" guys really helped in the second session. Started to get to know the track.

Found the lip on the patch in turn 1 was upsetting the suspension so added half a turn of rebound from stock. Massive improvement in grip and feel.

Was cool doing the combined 3/4 session at the end. Was a bugger fatigue was starting to set in. Definatly felt like I was quick enough to be in group 2/3 by the end of the day though :2thumbsup

Also big thanks to whoever it was in the last session that I followed - Black and yellow gixxer so might have been you enigma?. Keen to get some more tips next time.

My tyres have never looked so good

1st March 2008, 10:04
A big thanks to MotoTT for another great day at the track!

Also a big thank you to Shaun Harris for taking the time to look at a complete stranger's suspension setup. Not only did he measure the bike up for me and give me directions of what to do with it, but also lend me his tools so that I could adjust the shock's pre load for better handling coming out of corners. I had some issues with sliding and running wide at the exit of the corners, the being 996 quite torquey at low revs and having a poor rear setup doesn't help, giving me a few big moments, leaving 2 meters of black rubber marks at the exit of the back sweeper when the rear started to slide on me.
I think Shaun's suggestions improved the handling quite a bit, but there's only so much you can do with the stock Showa shock and a too soft spring, so next I'll swap it for a Ohlins I've got my hands on.

Also, thank you to the gentleman on a GSX 750 parked next to our van who showed me some very good lines around the back sweeper. I'll make sure to practice this more in the future. (sorry, I didn't get your name, but the both of us are in the fourth picture posted previously, you had plate 36YYR.)

This was also the first time with the new faring from Justfarings on the bike. I haven't had them painted yet, so the Ducati was only half as fast in white colour as it is in red. I also fitted a double bubble screen, while it doesn't looks as good as the smaller screen, it really helps at high speed when tucked down behind it.

I had a blast and will be back hopefully for the next meeting. All thumbs up!!

Speaking of such things...what a wicked day!! The Brutale has certainly earnt its space in the garage! Was able to ride smoother and at times faster than on the SD-R so one happy chap here.[/B]

Took Unit out on her ZX14 two up...ummm I don't think she'll be keen for that again though :pinch: She reckoned she got her boots down more on the back of her bike than when she was riding it,oh and the pipes are all scraped up now too. :blank:

Thanks to all involved in such a fantastic day!
Here's a few pic's and will post a video a bit later on.

Good to see everyone entering t1 in an orderly fashion....as well as a couple of shot of Brutus out there.
Hope A enjoyed herself.

Yes, I recognised your bike out on the track and thought "Oh, I must pop over and say hi" but it was a busy afternoon out there what with swapping bikes around and doing one's best to sneak in and burgle the slow and medium groups.

:innocent:

Same boat for me. Saw you trucking up and down pit lane on Betty. She's a pretty recognisable bike eh.

Looked like there were a few KB'ers up the end.

Gave me a totally different perspective on racing and a million times more confidence in my tyres on the road (subject to surface conditions).

Well I'm utterly knackered... 600km of open road (most in the blackness of night and fog) and 140km of track time in the last 24 hours kinda took it out of me.

:banana::banana::banana::banana:

If you rode in group 4 with Enigma gsxr where he was showing lines I got you on a bullet cam/onboard off the back of a ducati 996 someone on a ike like yours was riding beside either a vfr o cbr 250 can't remember for some of the lap... it was the 2nd to last session for that group - the session before they combined the groups

Special thanks to all four who rode for the formation shoot & to Shaun H too :)

The footage was being digitised right now! - until the humidity in AK at 88% stopped the DVcams from working! I'll have to wait till tomorrow to get the rest into the machine...or for whatever day humidity drops to 60%

so far the footage looks outrageously cool

Well that was a awesome day! i had a mint time! :headbang:

Its always a bit of a long day driving down in the morning and coming back straight after but always worth it!

The weather turned out better than i expected and the track got nice and hot around midday, which gave me more confidence to push the tyres in the corners. It still amazes me how well these bikes can handle ( & how i hold it back from its potential).

It was awesome to see some nice bikes there too! a couple of new 1098's and even an S version. one blasted past me on the back straight (gee i wonder how???:stupid:) and scounded like the devil was late for an appointment!

Im glad everyone else had a good time and I enjoyed meeting new people.

Can't wait for the next one! Cheers MotoTT for a well run day!:niceone:

As we're a combination of Norfland and B.O.P blokes his bike was promptly duct taped back together so he could ride it back to TGA ;)

Yeh that was pretty freaky. I was just in front of him about to turn into the corner at the end of the straight when next thing this bike overtakes me on the left of me; on its side....sparks flying every where...and just when I was thinking to myself "thats weird" a guy face down spread into a starfish flies past me on the same side down the drag strip. He was far flying I reckon 120kph and his bike was going way quicker than that. Got some video footage of it I will post up later. :pinch:

I had a moment at exactly the same spot on the track...was going hammer for tooth about to go around the outside (on the left) at the kink and this bike swerved over to the left right in my line....I had nowhere to go so locked up the front wheel, went onto the grass to the left trying to slow down....looked to the right seeing about four bikes looking at me on the grass wondering what the fuck I was doing....thankfully they all gave me room to head over the track into the gravel at the back of the track! whew that was interesting!

You have to be really careful overtaking at that spot cause everyone seems to have their own ideas as to where the racing line is and swerve all over the place to get to it! I gave massive room at that spot from that point on as can be seen in my video posted earlier in this thread due to now knowing where the fuck people were going to end up going.

At the end of the day you are supposed to hold your line... person passing gives way, and only passes on the outside. Only time you should back off in a situation like that is if you are the person passing and cannot complete the pass safely.

That's soooooooo on the money. I'd got used to being out the front (well catching up to the back actually) of the slow group in clear air that when I went in the middle of the combined 3/4 group I just about got taken out on the hairpin.

I'd been doing the line where you cut in, drift out, then cut in again that you're doing in that vid and it seems to be really smooth and quick.

Only problem was some of the guys in the 3/4 combined group were trying to go around me out wide having no idea I was going to drift out which meant I ended up aiming at them mid corner. I know I should hold my line in that situation but I'd end up running them off into the grass...

Any ideas of what to do next time would be appreciated. Made me think next time being at the back of the fast group would be a good place to be.

So in my case, I backed off because he came into my line....who's at fault then?? Me I would say...too keen, too early in the session hence my front wasn't heated sufficiently and I had reduced braking effect...lesson has been learn't (although the bike in front did not hold his line).

I have just watched the Vid of the Aprillia crash, Yes the guy made a big mistake, but abusing him on here is going to get nothing done in a healthy way, very glad the rider that was hit, was not taken down as well, and I am very sure, the Aprillia rider has learned a valuable lesson, and lots of others from watching the crash video, and realising just how easy it is to make a very serious mistake!

Hope the Crashed rider is OK

My thoughts on how riders can be safer at track days, are simple really

STOP FOLLOWING EACH OTHER SO CLOSE- IT IS NOT A RACE- AND YOU ARE NOT RACER RIDERS

The last track day I was at that was not a MOTOTT day, had a shit load of crashes on the day, I was really very surprised and shocked by it all, and the real main problem was, riders following each other so close, SO IF ONE GOES DOWN, you follow suit!

Give each other more room, and stop trying to be racers, these track days are to go fast yes, but also to go fast SAFELY PLEASE.

I know this sounds a bit funny coming from some one like me, but I have been in the race game for over 23 years now, and it is very easy to stand back, and see what are some of the safety issues on a race track.

thanks to the wonderful world of technology we can all see what happened from multiple angles and learn from it without actually having it happen to us or right in front of us!

That aprillia crash almost happened to me in group 4, the guy came across (as is fully allowed to and should), but being able to see it coming and having a good sized following distance meant there was no problem.

Trackdays are a hell of a lot of fun, but they arent race meetings. Everyone has to (and usually do) accommadate for other riders.

Cant wait for the next one. but i think i may move up a group so as to make future days safer for me and everyone in the group.

LilSel and i were arguing if it was a low or high side...

Lowside = loss of traction in a corner, bike falls down on the side it was already leaning towards.

Highside = loss of traction in a corner followed by a sudden regaining of traction, bike twists and flicks over the other side and rider flies through the air with the greatest of ease. Briefly. Then there is pain.

So not all crashes can be classified as lowsides or highsides, particularly when they're caused by a bike simply being ridden straight into something else.

I'd probably just call that one a 'bounce'... the rider might want to invest in a rubber pelvis if he plans on repeating it.
