For those of you that are interested, here are a couple of pics of the new BMW R1150 Police Bike. This is the one I rode during my 2 day course last week and hopefully my new one wont be too far away.
Definitely different from the Honda ST1100 - some good points and bad points but overall not a bad bike. Extremely comfortable seat - we did about 750kms over a day and a half and there was no pain!
There are apparently 500 of these in use in the USA and they carry radar and laser guns on their ones... the new bike boss in Wellington will be looking into putting radar units on the NZ bikes at some stage.
Life can't be too bad if you are getting paid to ride a bike eh!

I was on a SOCO course a couple of weeks ago and saw they had a couple of little XR Hondas in the garage. Did you guys have wheelie assessment or something?,

No, we didn't do any off-roading. Next year they will be running 2 week courses for cops interested in becoming bike cops and they will do off-road stuff during that course. The 2 days was just to familiarise ourselves with the new BM.

Probably should but I don't have any say on the stickers - sorry about that but hopefully the really bright new red and blue LED flashing strobe lights will catch your attention.

Crikey BC that's a pretty wide bike you got there. I'm not too sure if I'd be keen to try and lanesplit through the traffic in that one.
How do you think it will go in a stiff sideways breeze too? As for weight, it looks more like 220-230 kilos, with maybe another 30 on board...
Seat looks nice and comfy.
Congrats anyway. At least there's still some police on the road that can relate to what it's like to ride on our roads.

celticno6 that thought came to my mind too, that it doesn't look like it would fit between the cars.
But I guess the sirens might make the cars move aside a bit...

I'm sure I will be able to do that although being in a chase on a bike in Auckland is pretty scary to be honest - everything is happening at what seems like 10 times the pace, you are trying to use your left index finger to use the radio at the same time as the clutch and then you have all those crazy cage drivers to worry about coz they don't know where to go! Gets a bit crazy at times.

Yeah, I was a bit shocked when the instructor started talking about 400kgs as well but I'm just going on what he said... all I know is I wont be picking it up by myself that's for sure. And will definitely have to watch the mirrors if I'm in a hurry... at least they just pop back in!

I saw a group of 4 bike cops driving down by the WLG police college on Monday when it was really freaking windy... Oh yeah, that looked like fun :/ Wobbling all over the place...
So was I of course... And I thought MY bike was a whale with a sail... Those guys didn't look happy... and they didn't wave back... Have some freaking courtesy for fecks sake, we're all bikers.
Unless of course 'evil bike boss' was on the first bike and leading his ducklings.

There aren't any based in P.Nth. They tend to be utilised on city motorways mainly.

There are only about 25 operational bikes throughout the country with the majority (about 17) based in Auckland, a handful in Wellington and the rest scattered around the North Island. There are none in the South Island. The Police College has 4 BMW's for training and 4 motor cross bikes.

I wonder myself sometimes to be honest.. the big bikes can be a pain but yes, they do have to carry a fair amount of gear including first aid kit and fire extinguisher, wet weather gear, ticket books (have to do a bit of work!) and crash reports.

Dunno If you guys remember this far back but many years ago the CHP refused to ride their kwakka 1300 patrol bikes because the forks weren't strong enough.
Sure enough almost ever patrol bike had badly bent forks.
Kawasaki did a bunch of tests and couldn't see how it would be possible to bend forks under normal riding conditions.
The CHP reply was that -"our harleys forks dont bend"
An engineer from Kawasaki then followed 2 patrol officers for a week to figure out what was happening.
coming apon a broken down american land crab the patrol officers casually drove their bikes into the back of the car and pushed it 1/2 mile to the nearest freeway offramp.
How to explain to a cop that um bike forks aind sesighned to push 15 tonnes of american iron -summat had to give.

Let's get one thing straight here. While most of my time is spent doing traffic work, I do attend crashes, fights, domestics, burglars on jobs and other jobs your so called "proper police" go to. I have the same training as them and where I work, a shitload more experience than most of them so before you go off the rails making stupid generalisations like that, maybe you could stick to your own stories and then let everyone decide if you are hard done by.

Hey Bykey Cop what's your opinion on this:
I was going to work recently on Esmonde road - the on ramp towards the motorway from Takapuna. Esmonde road traffic was at a stand still. It's a two lane road and I was threading my way in between - maybe doing 10-15 kph. Very slow. I didn't get a ticket but I got a bollocking over the loud speaker from a cop car stuck in the traffic: "Motorcyle splitting traffic - get back into the lane!" Those speakers are loud as! A bit embarassing too....anyway I couldn't see what his beef was.
What's your thoughts on splitting traffic? As long as your being safe about it, no issue? Or striaght into the ticket book every time? (I won't hold you to it!)

cooor 400kgs?? thats a big beast to lump around the traffic.
As for lane splitting with lights... have you ever thought you might be safer to turn all the lights and sirens off and just ride past the cars? (I'm serious) Thats what I do and for the most part it seems safer and they're LESS likely to hit you if they don't know you're there or at least don't have a chance to panic as you go past (mind you, I ride with the light on full beam).
Ok, maybe leave the flashers on but turn the siren off and go for it. I guess you'd get into trouble for quick lane splitting without the lights on at least right? (I know I do!)

They (the cops) were probably just jealous that you were moving and they weren't. Personally (and I have said this before somewhere on here), I don't really mind as long as other traffic is going slow and you aren't doing the speed of sound either.... obviously there are dangers and each biker has to weigh those dangers up in the circumstances but unless I thought it was dangerous, I wouldn't chase you... (or scream over the loudspeaker). There have to be some advantages in having a bike in peak hour....

Yeah, tend to agree with you there and depending on how fast or how much weaving I'm doing (and traffic density) will determine for me what is on and what's not... people do panic and sometimes its much easier watching them panic after you have got past them.

I must be honest with the few cops I have spoken to I always get a different opinion about the lane splitting thing. The "bike" cops are nicer about these things than the others.
Back to the subject 400kg's!!!!!!! F me thats heavy how long does it take to get to hmmmm 100.

400kg's and 1150cc's of throbbing BMW twin power, so you won't be matching R1's top speeds then?

if you stand out to be as much of a loser on the street as you do on here, then it's no wonder....
Hmm, let's see. Someone who trawls around the Internet wishing cops dead has trouble getting them to come to attend burglary clean-up. Enough to make me believe in Karma.

Hitcher, you remind me of the old (black and white TV old) Batman series where in the middle of a Zap! Kapow! Biff! type fight Batmen would correct Robins grammar "Easily Robin, it's easily, you should have said 'you crooks won't get away with this as EASILY next time instead of easy'" Splat!!! "Gosh Batman, thanks for correcting me" Biff!!! "Yes Robin, good grammar is of paramount importance"Kapow!! :doobey:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA... Always wanted to have a go on a cop bike. The old school honda ones. I mean they say the bike shouldn't way more than 3 times your weight but at 400 odd kg's thats like almost 7 times my weight.
Only seen 2 cop bikers (going the other way). Gave them a wave and they waved back. :scooter: :scooter:

For those of you that are interested, here are a couple of pics of the new BMW R1150 Police Bike. This is the one I rode during my 2 day course last week and hopefully my new one wont be too far away.
That's a pretty good looking bike...
I was walking past the police garage in Hobson St the other day and two bike cops rode out side by side, and just as they did - I am not making this up - my iPod kicked into the CHiPs theme song. It was incredibly surreal, I just started laughing to myself, as I watched them right up Hobson and turn right.
Go Poncho!

Nice BC, Nodman was saying he likes the R1150 alot more than the ST1100...... what are the pluses and minuses????
Have the Police finally forked out the cash for the radios???
NODMAN says he likes a BMW. I'll frame those words.

I think you'll find they carry shitloads of gear - first aid kits and the like. You wouldn't want to be the cop who arrives first at a crash and stand there with your dick in your hands, after all.
lots and lots of ticket books. :Punk:

he must be a real loser as not even Lou is supporting him.
BMW R1150RT bike V Jappa. get a real rider on it and I will put my monet on the RT thru a set of twisties. Telelever is just superb, the brakes are awesome and the twin just pulls like a schoolgirl on her first date.

I'm very discriminating in who I support. Vitriol with a touch of humour would be a good start. Rationality and intelligence is helpful too.
