Could have been a pushbike rider or motorcyclist just as easily, although one would hope that a motorbike would have the grunt to accelerate away from the hazard. (Assuming the rider was also aware of their danger and ready to take evasive action).
Crikey, that's the worst thing I have ever seen.

Look closer.
The truck is fully laden with heavy shit and honking along.
Very very hard to stop any faster than a scooter.
Was still in the wrong but the scooter rider didn't do themselves any favours either.
Let it be a lesson, Always give trucks a good braking distance!

If you watch the scooter and truck when they're in the distance, the scooter is on the far left side of the road and it looks like the truck moves right to go around him, then the scooter decides to change lanes.

Yep, the scooter rider is all over the place, so the truck driver carn't work out which way it is going.

I can't see how you can argue that the truck is at fault...
The scooter is pulling right across the lane - I sure can't see if he's indicating. Completely oblivious to what's behind him.
No matter who's at fault anyway - I think the evidence clearly shows that the fella on the scooter lost... badly.
But yeah, that shows quite clearly that you shouldn't fuck around with trucks. They'll rip you in half - literally.
Edit:
At least the guy was wearing a helmet...
I love how the cars react during and after the accident. Kinda like: "WTF is that, ewww, nothing to see here - let's run along." Like the bloody sheep they are.

WOW! That was a pretty clear vid...I don't get troubled by vids like that (being a mother an all, you get to face gore often ), but I reckon that might be a good one to show "would be" road racers.
Although in this case I agree the truck was fully at fault.

That guys pics have been around for a while, on a couple of American forums I belong to some of the guys know personally of the accident. Obviously he died on impact, apparently his brain was detached from the stem on impact. There is a couple of sites hosting the pics saying that he survived, snopes even has a page on it.

I took my RSV into the shop yesterday for the swingarm recall & they gave me a TGB 50 step thru to go home on & honestly, going into turn one at Ruapuna at 220k hanging off a sidecar has nothing on what my trip home was like.
Straight onto Hewletts road (a main Mt Maunganui port route) at 4.30 among the TD Haulage Kenworths was about the bloody limit, I had a mental image of that exact scenario happening to me.
The bastards can drop the RSV back to me & run the gauntlet on the fuckin scooter themselves & we'll see how hard they are.

It doesn't really matter who's at fault does it? My thought is that if you're on a scooter (or motorcycle, or small, slow car), you should be EXTRA aware of what other motorists are doing. This is a sad lesson in that very principle.

Exactly why a lot of arrogant people buy 4x4's cause they love the ability to drive around without much thought and have the comfort of knowing if anyone is going to die in a collision they're most likely to have caused it's not going to be them.

That truck driver was driving too fast... and the scooter rider was changing lanes and got clipped by the truck.
I doubt the scooter rider even knew what happened to him/her, as it was all over so fast.
The truck had a full load on.... and the truck driver didn't allow braking distance between himself and the scooter.
RIP to the scooter rider.

I came close to taking out a chick in a 4x4 as I was approaching Putaruru from the north. Stupid be-atch (heading to Tirau) was overtaking a bus around a blind corner towards me. She damn near crapped herself as she just sqeezed between the bus & my........
Big green Army truck that had 12 1000lb bombs on the back.
No way in hell I could move without rolling & crashing. Had we met head on, I would have had a nice gentle slow down as I would have used her entire vehicle as my crumple zone. She would have been toast.

Well I've just watched the video, and it's pretty horrible. However, I must disagree with some of the posts here. I see this as most certainly being the fault of the truck driver - I've said it before and I'll say it again, there's never ANY excuse for hitting someone from behind. The truck driver is going WAY too fast, right up the arse of the scooter rider. He ASSUMES that he knows what the scooter rider will do (which is plain stupid in my book), and caused that accident. I hope he was charged criminally.
Mikkel
12th February 2008, 16:50
So what you guys are saying is - if you hit a car that's doing a U-turn it's your own fault?
Anyway, I don't think this is from NZ. When someone has established where this is filmed and what the local road rules are we can start about placing the blame.
Just because you're on two wheels doesn't mean you're right and don't have to watch behind you.
Scooterboy lost - that's for sure. Placing the blame is academic - but he was at least partly responsible for his own demise.

My cousin used to ride his 10 speed from Palmerston North to Bulls on the weekends coming back from Uni. He was a clever guy in his late teens doing training to become a Pharmacist. Was almost home, arrived in Bulls and at an intersection a truck passed him and then turned left into a side road. Similar result. Was a real tragic thing to happen, my Aunty has never really recovered from it. Poor lady.
That video is the first time I have thought of the accident in over 20 years. Bloody shocking but important for the skidmarks of this world to see. Respect the ride, message coming out nice and strong.
I have used a pushy to commute for years and had a couple of cars do the same thing. Very painful results as I flew over the cars on both occasions, but no worse off than a bin mountain biking. A truck doing the same thing, scary shit.

This is why owning the lane or pulling over is so important.
That is exactly what I get the shits when I see learner and scooter riders riding hard left at 70km/h on the motorways (and 40km/h in city streets). People will try to pass in the same lane.
From what I could see the truck was passing the scooter because the scooter wasn't owning their lane.
Unfortunately the scooter decided to change lanes at the point where the truck driver couldn't do shit.
Either way it's bloody gory.

Quick road safety lecture for those folks who have never driven a rig.
Even in a cab over there are about 2 meters in front of the bumper the driver cannot see. More if the driver is short, has stuff on the dash etc.

This (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=706052#post706052) is worse, it still gives me nightmares!! You were warned!!!
Hmmm, doesn't bother me truth be told. After having read one of the first comments in the thread (the one about not wanting to let go of the pole) before watching the video I couldn't help laughing when the rescue workers started getting a bit frantic about getting him off it.
However, I find the scooter video far more cringe inducing... But truth be told - it's not the gore or the carnage itself that get to me, it's watching it unfold and just knowing that while that fella might be alive and well now, but he's not going to be well, and most likely not alive either, in another 5 seconds.
Both are fascinating photage to watch in a part of the world where we're spared the more gory sides of life...
Another example is this homepage: Wound Ballistics (http://history.amedd.army.mil/booksdocs/wwii/woundblstcs/default.htm)
No videos - but a lot of very graphic black and white images embedded in the text. Makes for interesting reading btw. Some bits of it are not for the faint of heart though.
I have a strong stomach for this kind of thing, and tend to tolerate most of it. This one was no exception, but it defiantely disturbed me how graphic it was. I've never seen anything quite like it. What a horrendous end to a life - I'm sitting here imagining what it would be like if that were my brother or father. Terrible.
I don't think it would be that horrible. Horrible for the family to watch yes - but that would be pretty much "Hey, looks like I'm gonna kiss that pole - good thing I'm wearing a hel...."
Its from Taiwan.
Let's get hold of a set of the Taiwan road code then.
Thats bad. The only thing that makes me feel better is the scooter rider wouldn't have had a clue what was happening, instant lights-out.
Hmmm, I'm sure he'd have a few seconds to think WTF before being run over by the first wheel - and he might very well have been conscious even after that point.

It was Thailand - lived there and recognised the writing. The reason they take the scraping every last bit of body up seriously is as buddhists they believe that the next life will not suffer more if all body parts are present when they go on to their next life.
Only a select group of people in Thailand will touch a dead body (something about the dead person's bad karma attaching to you) and so many times when driving around you will see many a motorbiker who has lost a fight with a truck - oh and they don't cover the body with a sheet. A very large crowd will gather and gawk - makes for nice traffic jams while you get stuck right next to the body in the back of a taxi while you try desperately to distract your child so as they are oblivious to the whole thing
When we first arrived the hotel (where we worked) regularly had the police in trying to scare the staff into wearing helmets etc and brought along some gnarly photos. The brain in the middle of the road is one that will stay with me forever...:(

Had similar experiences when living in Singapore...interesting the difference in 'clean up' time between the various areas...
Generally one jandal on the road followed by another over 20 or so metres signalled the scene up ahead.

That first video is pretty gross... Actually all of them were... But I think its just a matter of the one thing that people keep telling me before I start riding on the road: Pretend that no one on the road can see you, what you're doing or that they will anticipate what you're doing. As a rider on 2 wheels, you're so much more vulnerable, because of the smaller size of the vehicle and lack of concentration from other drivers, so we've really got to take a lot more care. Also, remember that trucks are really high up, and I've never driven one before, but I think its pretty obvious that its a lot harder for truckers to see vehicles lower down on the road.. So be careful everyone :) I really don't want to be put off riding!!!:no:

The problem with trucks, especially loaded trucks is they have a longer stopping distance.
Pull in front of one at your own peril.

And so many people ignore that, i would hate to be a truck driver for that reason.

Normally I watch these things fine. Tonight I am not gonna bother trying. Today fuckin sucked so far. Don't need that shit.
We know how bikes are, stuff up in the wrong place at the wrong time and there are always things wanting to make you into small little bits. Might watch it tomorrow when I am myself again. (IE - I normally never ever swear, but bugger it today)

Finally watched it, cushioned by alcohol.
Frankly, if it was a toss-up between cancer or being crushed by a truck and shown on the internet, the truck is the way I'd prefer.

If I ever get crushed by a truck or bite the bullet in any spectacular way I sure hope I'll make the internet.
There by not saying I have any desire to become (in)famous!

So tell me mcduck, what's the difference between your flippant attitude here and me not being particularly interested in the welfare of a motoryclist that created their own demise?
