View Full Version : North Island: BustaGut Gathering - Turangi Queens Birthday '08
Qkchk
12th February 2008, 12:52
Back due to popular demand! Same as we did last year for the KB Gathering (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=46652).
KBers from North, South, East and West converge together in Turangi (Southern end of Lake Taupo) and have a bloody good time over the three days. Saturday the 31st May, Sunday the 1st June and Monday the 2nd of June. After last year's experience I think there will be a few going down on the Friday (Like myself and Qkkid)......
Here's a quick outline of what we plan to do:
Saturday
Regional groups ride to Turangi on Saturday (obviously you wouldn't ride direct, its a good chance to explore some roads on the way there), meet and greet Sat arvo over a beer or two. Settle in for the night. Hot Pools in Tokaanu and socializing etc..
Sunday
Go for a big group ride or multiple groups rides (depends on group numbers) Here are some suggestions, Tamuranui Saddle, Lake district - Desert Rd - Ohakune ... Any Ideas for rides please people....
Sunday night have a mass BBQ/(or something else-suggestions?) and drinkies etc
Monday
Say our goodbyes and head back in our groups riding the long way home....
Here are the details of where we are staying and how/where to book:
We are staying at the Turangi Cabins (as used by the Rusty Nuts Grand Challenge) www.turangicabins.co.nz/holiday-park.html
PRICES:
Cabins (per night)
Adult $20.00
Children (2-16 Years) $10.00
Linen hire $5.00
To make a booking, or even just to enquire about one you can:
E-mail bookings at cabinsgalore@xtra.co.nz
Or ring Ph/fax 07 386 8754
All interested parties lodge your attendance HERE (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=1621&day=2008-5-31)

Any Ideas for rides please people....
Well, as Steve was talking about the forgoten highway at the northland run I thought I might throw this idea out there, map atached.
Turangi - National Park
National Park - Taumarunui
Taumarunui - Waitara
Waitara - Ohura
Ohura - Taumarunui
Taumarunui - Turangi
About a 530km round trip, longest leg between fuel stops should be 200km. Abput all I dont know is what the roads are like, I am pretty sure they are all sealed apart from a small section of gravel on the forgotton highway.
Just an idea.

Turangi - National Park - Taumaranui is pretty boring apart from the first bit over the hill, out of Tokaanu. Probably better to do an out an return Turangi - Taumaranui on 41 and carry on round to Stratford for the return.

This would be a fine thing. Now to see if i can get time off!
Wonder if the RG500 will be going, stay going for long enough to complete the trip and if there are enough petrol stations?

Probably a good time to start thinking about where you want to go. I know the Forgotten Highway is a must do this time! (As PUMBA has pointed out....) FIGJAM is a wealth of knowledge for the area as well.
Will have GPS on the bike and have Mapsource so I can make up routes and load them up if need be.

Sounds like a plan stan, might do the Friday arvo off,and Tuesday off.
See they have room enough to play cricket, now rules are no running between wickets, can't be out on 0 runs, hit a ball one scull, hit a 4 get 4 runs plus 2 credits for sculling if needed for next couple of balls, hit a 6 get the runs(6)plus 4 credits for sculling, can't be out for rest of the over. Each miss is a scull, hence it is good to have a few credits.
As above map around the parts around Tarata back blocks to nearly the road end by Te Wera are unsealed and rutty, when I last drove there mid Jan,even the odd loose animal.

Yea I put the idea up so people could make coment, I did have a funny feeling there would be a bit of gravel in and around that area. Any suggestions for alternatives along the same theme??

Well the VFR turning into a REAL touring bike, next thing you will be telling us you have put a sheapskin on the seat, and fitted hard luggage:lol:
And besides isint it the Kawaka that really needs the GPS, lets be honest here.

Now a Cricket Match with Northern vs Southern and /or West vs East etc would be a excellent idea!
Me and Qkkid have Friday off but are flying back in from overseas that day. Dont land until 12pm so if we have the engergy to ride down after.... otherwise it will be Sat Morning.

The 007's are keen.. gotta work out a couple of logistics, the forgotten highway is a 'gotta do that'..
Warning - Papa gets horrendously slippery in the wet and is the base of most of that road. Best avoided in rain for machinery preservation. My 2c.

Your Positive thoughts will do the trick.. have you come to a short list of potential mounts for the trip? Is it another SV maybe? 007XX and I have just come back from 1150km trip to MSTRS and YUNGATART's party, and my SV has just clicked the 20k mark.. going strong and just awesome on the Napier - Taupo road..:2thumbsup
Love the sound of the V twin through those gorges..:2guns:

Yea have a short list and to honest the SV is pretty high up on it at the moment, I was just so hapy with that bike, hopefully the weather holds and I can get out and do some testing this weekend.
I also have a back up plan in the form of a MT01 or CB1300 that are sitting in a shed in the Waikato that I am pretty sure are not being used that weekend:clap:

Biggest question at the moment though is: do I buy new treads before or after the ride????
Can't quite decide if they'd hang in there for another 1500kms or so???? Might need to drop by your joint for a 2nd and 3rd opinion I think.

will post seperate thread later but I have new wheels so will definately look forward to bringing on this rally  oh & since I have a few days off prior I will be getting to turangi the long way round
Its good to see momentum starting to pick up on the thread - If you dont go ahead and book (and miss out) you will be one of THOSE people who read the thread after the weekend and say 'Oh I wished I had gone'. Maybe some of those peeps who said that last year will pull finger and turn up?
NN, after last years ride I would go with the new tyres option. Gotta remember that the roads down there in winter tend to stay damp all day(unless in direct sunlight) and I would recommend getting as must grip as I could in a tyre. Was thinking of taking the chook chaser down but I wouldnt be practising what I preach... Those knobbies are great in the dry but you gotta becareful of those wet tar patches (skiddy undies syndrome). Becides, I would be too busy hunting out dirt roads in the region - thats not what this ride is intended for. Its all about finding twisted tarmac bliss  with a bit of scenery thrown in.
but I have new wheels so will definately look forward to bringing on this rally

Yeah, no probs thanks buddie.
Had a great week. No rain till top of Rimitakas, where I had a piss with Colapop (haha). Then dry till Raetahi, so parapara's were a treat. Wet across the back of mountains to Turangi. Mostly dry today through Tamaranui etc. Great Roads!!!
Came home day early, apparently a cold front late today, nothin like your own bed when it's cold (getting old and soft???)
Are you guys coming Queen's B/Day, didn't get a chance to chat much at John's.

Well as luck would have it I rang around looking for a good price on these Conti Road Attacks that Pumba seems so keen on.

We wont be going down long stretches of gravel roads (as long as Qkkid isnt leading) however there 'was' discussion about doing the Forgotten Highway (but it is not set in concrete as of yet). Routes will be discussed when we are down there and we will try to make it suitable for everyone.
Dont be too worried about the weekend, Chanceyy was a rookie last year and proved to be very competent! She was on my tail during part of the ride - Maybe I was holding her up? This weekend is all about meeting new people and enjoying what we all have in common - Motorcycling! Its not a race or a show-off parade, just a group ride. :ride: We have a system of making sure people dont get left behind or lost. We do the occasional re-group, just to make sure. As long as you can ride @ 100kph on the open road you will fine.

Hmm since I have the thurs off as well I thought I might ride up to my olds in Te Aroha & either head back fri/sat so hoping to tag on with someone from around hamilton or matamata area .. will see wot the weather is doing closer to the time
Shane, hopefully I have a bike and it is my intention to go down on Saturday (I cant really afford any time off work at the moment), my other option if I end up borrowing a bike is I will drive to Morrinsville Friday night, pick up a bike, and then on Saturday meet up somewhere with any of the guys from up north that are heading down.
I am all little up in the air at the moment but hopefully it will be one of those two options.

Sweet, I'm in much the same boat, wouldn't be a good time to take the extra day off. drop me a line svaughan@gencom.com and we can organise to meet up on the Saturday.
As Qkkid said, we wont be back until 12pm on the Friday. We have the cabin booked for the Fri night, so will try to get down that afternoon. By the time we get home and jump on the bikes we will be leaving Albany around 2pm. What time were you heading down Tide?

I would bet on it that we will come down the middle via the Parongia express, jump onto SH4 through to Taumaranui then hang a left across the Saddle Road to Turangi. We could make a slight deviation and meet up @ Te Awamutu.....

Hey Guys
I just had what I think is a brilliant idea!
Would anybody have any objections if I was to contact Shaun Harris and offer to comp him for the weekend (ie pay for his cabin and alcohol) in exchange for him tweaking our suspensions over the course of the weekend.
I've never meet the man, but by all accounts he's a top bloke, and this sort of thing might be right up his alley.
On another note do any of you know him personally and do you know if he's back on the bike yet?
Also I'd like some help to cover the costs of comp'ing him (I suspect it would be around $200 in total for the weekend if he brings his family as well).
$10 or $20 each to have your suspension optimised would be a bargain.
Cheers
Shane

If you come via Forgotten Highway on the Saturday,we might join in and cruise to Turangi with those doing the ride, then shoot up Paraparas.
Have to work Saturday morning in Stratford till noon, the idea was get home chuck gear on bike and vamoose around 1pm from home, thus taking leisurelly ride 2 up that pm.If a group is heading via F/H happy to wait.Need to leave the Sth Naki region around 2.30pm to get to Turangi by 5ish.
On the other hand doing this ride on Sunday could be a goer as well for us,leave early and lunch at Whanga pub,or any cafe from Stratford or Hawera as well.

We will be travelling up on Saturday, probably Wairarapa - Track - then ??, options are Pohangina Valley, Mangaweka or Paraparas.
I'd be hoping for the F' Hiway ride on the Sunday. It's pretty much the same from Stratford to Turangi via Para's or Awakino-Aria & about another 20K's via Piopio. Both ways are good rides so weather could decide the route from there.

If the ride is going to come via Taumaranui,Forgotten Highway and Paraparas let us know approx leaving time, will try to hook up at Whanga pub and enjoy the ride back to Hawera.
Also if doing this ride,if you want to stop at the Whanga pub for lunch,it would pay to ring them and say 50 people are coming, also a good cafe just prior to the pub.Or else in Hawera there are a few cafes open, they are all within about 1 km of each other,so no worries of too many people at one time, some might have a personal choice, but all are good, and gas stations open,on Sundays in Stratford,Eltham,Hawera,Patea so once in Stratford no worries about fuel, just none between Taumaranui-Stratford 150km.

My bike was still in the container on the way from the Isle of Wight this time last year, so we had to go in the truck. Thankfully, we were made more than welcome, and had an absolute hoot.
This time, I've got a dentists appt taking 70% of this weeks wages, so will be riding down for the Saturday social only I'm afraid (late booking dependent.).
Aside from the dental, I'm meant to be spending the whole weekend revising for a very important career changing exam I'm due to sit on Tuesday, so must apologise for what appears to be a lack of effort, but this really has come at what could not be a more skint/crucial weekend.

Qkchk and Qkkid checking in from Nadi, Fiji. Weather over here has been a steady 28degrees with the ocean as warm as 28-29degrees. Ha, bet we will freeze our arses off when we get back! :baby:
You are going to have the shock of your life
Have checked out the metservice website and it looks like we may have some awesome weather installed for the weekend! Huge high over the tasman on Friday so we should be sweet for some awesome riding!
Not to sure if that is good or bad, big high means frost and fog:cold:
Well ,we better get back to lazying around the pool and getting burnt, see you turkeys on Saturday (and Friday for those who are coming down earlier!):chase:

Yea well I better get back to work, so yea, you win

From small acorns do mighty oaks grow.
This is, bear in mind, a pretty damn near centre as you can get meet up. As locals to this, we went up for the Aucks cheesecutter ride, and down to the cliffhanger hill climb. Neither of which was an exceptionally hard ride.
This meet gives KBers from the whole Island a chance to meet folks you might not ordinarily bump in to.
Come on down, you may surprise yourself with a rather unexpected good time.

whats a rough guide to expected numbers from years past attending this event?
Looking at the photos from last years trip, the sunday we had about 15 bikes parked up. Through a few pillions into that, and a couple of people that stayed back in Turangi because of mechanical failure.
20 people enroled so far this year.
There was 17 or 18 bikes on the Sunday ride last year but F5Dave came and went, phantom was crook and Kinger was still crated so with pillions there were about 25 in attendance.
It does surprise me that many would rather turn-up to an event and tent-it in the snow, rather than enjoy the comforts of a cabin and hot pool between rides, but all who attended last year seemed to have a great time.

Normal (past) ettiquitte has been to meet at Turangi, discuss options of where to go & get a consensus before deciding. That way it takes in to consideration the people attending, their abilities, road conditions, weather etc.

A couple of us are planning to head up via the Rimutakas and Pahiatua Track.
We'll be leaving Moonshine around 10'ish on Saturday and could stop in Ashhurst for lunch if others want to meet up there. Otherwise we might stop at Flat Hills, or Kimbolton or Taihape......or somewhere, because from Ashhurst we'll decide the rest of the route as the whim or weather takes us.

Ok, having a quick look in the old thread of what we did last year, that feels like a good starting point, and seeing as every one is remaining relitivly quite I will make some decisions. Open for coment from the group of course.
When: This Saturday Morning (31 May)
Where: Papakura Autobarn (Also known as the Papakura BP on the Motorway)
Time: Meet up and have a chinwag @ 0900 departing @ 0930
Why: Because we are going the long way around!
Route Option One.
Departing at Papakura heading down SH1 to Ngaruawahia then turning off taking the back road through Pirongia to Otorohanga then riding through to Taumarunui (SH4) then connecting to Turangi via the Taumarunui Saddle (very nice roads through here!).
Route Option Two
Essentially the same as option 1 but we head down state 22 to waignaro cut through to Raglan, and then back to Pirongia via the Raglan Divi. Might be a bit long but some very good roads.
Route Option Three
For those that came along last year we can do the trip home in reverse. Head down SH1 on to SH2 turning off at Maramarua (sp?) on heading through the forest on to the Tahuna Ohiniwai Road to Morrinsville to Cambridge via Scottsmans Vally Road. Then we can head down either side of thewaikato river (personally I would head down the eastern side via the old Taupo Road) to the western access and then on to Turangi.
Of course all these roads are the long way round but is far more Motorbike friendly - Corner carving! However we are open to suggestions on different roads.......

Is this still metal?
Used to be a small bit of metal a year ago, they have slowy been sealing it over the last 5 years or so I have been riding it (the metal gets that bit shorter every year) but last person I talked to that had come through there (would have been at least 3 months ago, I think) said it was all cut up for road works and it looked like they were sealing the last bit.
The gravel through that section has always been pretty good anyway, nothing to worry about.

28th May 2008, 17:18
That's good news. When I went to go through there before Xmas it was really shitty close to the Raglan end so we turned around and went via Whatawhata.
Sounds like we should have persevered.

Of course all these roads are the long way round but is far more Motorbike friendly - Corner carving! However we are open to suggestions on different roads.......
Option one.
SH1 is purgatory. I quite like the rest of it.
Option 2
I love this route. Not sure what you mean by the Raglan divi. Is that down the western side of the Waipa from just before Whatawhata?
An extension of this could be hang a left towards Kawhia, south of Pirongia. Left before Oparau down through Hauturu, Kinohaku, Te Anga, Piripiri, Waitomo Caves, back on to main drag at Hangatiki south of Otorohanga. I think about 70kms extra.
(from Peter Mitchell's Great Escapes Fish and Chip run.)
From Te Kuiti instead of going to Taumaranui go left onto SH30 through Bennydale to Mangakino, then Whakamaru SH32 (Western Access) and on to Turangi. Far less traffic on SH30 than SH4 and a great road.
Option 3
SH1 is boring and dangerous. Going out through Papakura, Hunua Rd. and Happy Valley should bring a smile. Come out on SH2 just before Mangatawhiri. SH2 through Maramarua then right to Okaeria, Wairenga, down eastern side of Lake Waikare. Turn left into Tahuna Rd.towards Te Hoe, and so on...
or:turn right after 3kms down Rutherford Rd. 10kms right into Orini Rd. to Taupiri then Ngaruawahia over the railway tracks and on to fame and fortune.
So many options.
I do like the idea of staying off major highways. From those registered there aren't any cruisers coming which would favour those roads.

I was thinking to maybe leave the Paraparas for the way home as it may also be part of the Sunday ride. (Although having done the Para's twice this year already, my preference, should we do the Forgotten Highway, would be a return via the Awakino Gorge). We were thinking more likely Kimbolton-Mangaweka or Vinegar Hill on the way up (depending on the weather)
On that weather note, I note the rain on Sunday is to come in from the west.
http://www.metservice.com/default/index.php?alias=farmrainoutlook
We might need to consider some other eastern alternatives for Sunday, but unfortunately at 980Km & 795Km, these Rusty Rider delights will probably be a bit long for most 'Gatherers'.

Just did some km comparisons and option 2 and 3 are almost identical, about 340km each, we can decide on the day dependent on were the weather is coming from.

I would have been happy to ride with you guys, but I signed up with toto first. and we have a light house theme going on, so we had to go see the light house at cape egmont. we managed to do 1400km in 3days on our little bikes.

It seems that all are home safe and had a fantastic time. Sorry about the confusion over the meet at BP Bayview...'somebody' is making a habit of needing rescued on the Napier-Taupo road....
Hope we made up for that later?
Twas a pity that the the Busa's and Chanceyy weren't able to fully enjoy their day, but that's motorcycling I guess. There'll be other times eh guys?

You meant the third time is worrying you? And no worries on the rescue. We didn't do much really. Steve and Warwick are the real heroes...we only orchestrated it.
And get better soon....

Want to add my $0.02. Great weekend.
Pretty sure it was enjoyed by all. A big thanks goes out to the Hawakes Bay crew, especially MSTRS and Yungatart, you guys and gals have some very fine roads in that part of the country with the weather to boot.
Look foward to doing it all again next year (probally with heated grips)
Oh an for all those that are interested I did (as well as most of the Auckland crew [well those that didnt use the back of the ute:bleh:]) just under 1300km with, average speed of 95kph:eek:

The last little lost sheep has been herded northwards!!!
Thanks you lot..we hope you enjoyed your HB sojourn as much as we did.
Another bit of luck and brilliant timing ensured I arrived at the gas station just as the lead riders were leaving and I was able to just join in.
Thanks for the guide - both personal and group guides.
We all had a blast. Will have to do it again.

A good weekend, even if I did have my own personal rain cloud on the way home - blue sky everywhere but it was raining over me - WTF?
My boy Robert enjoyed it as well - good to get him away from the TV....
