View Full Version : Selecting leathers?

Hi all,

Need some advice and opinion on selecting leathers,

Firstly i went around a few different bike shops looking at one and two piece leather suits average price seems to be between $1200-$2400 lower end being Teknic/Ixion and higher end being Spyke/Sidi/Alpine stars it appears that most bike shops don't have a great selection of suits with the exception of cycltreads having the most (In auckland atleast).

I ride on road 100% of the time with regular day trips out of auckland, currently i wear full Codura Ixion jacket and Spool pants, but feel that as my riding ability advances so should my gear, I'm a firm believer that leather protects far better than codura (thats my own opinion anyhow) Now what i would like from y'all is your opinion on what type of leathers i should go for i.e: 1pce/2pce how much i should spend on it i.e Ixion or Sidi etc... I'm also looking at the option of Quasimoto gear price wise it seems to be in between the higher and lower ends.

Also is there any difference with a 2pce suit and buying seperate zip together leather pants and jackets?? visually the only thing i could tell was the hump on the back of the 2pce race suit.

any info would be greatly appreciated

The other thing you might consider is custom made. I kind of had to because of my dwarvish legs, but pricewise I thought what i got was very reasonable, and you can't beat the fit. Kerrie at MSW is in K Rd and truly excellent to deal with.

I think a two piece suit from her was $1800 or so. and she uses good quality Knox armour also.

I would like to meet whoever it is that has the rack that fits the jacket on the front page. It might be an optical illusion is all.

DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU WANT PROTECTION FROM...THE ROAD OR THE WEATHER !!! LEATHER JUST SLOWS THE "GETTING WET" PROCESS DOWN A LITTLE BIT. If you only ride when the sun shines ( does it rain in jaffa land ??? ) LEATHER is fine.

I've just been down this same road...Try before you buy at all the Auckland bike & Leather shops...then visit Bret & Paula's place & try on some Quasimoto gear. Frosty wouldn't recomment crap.
I highly recommend their gear also. I bought my gear from them. Knox Armour, high grade cow hide etc...really good gear

Under a grand :)
I'm fat enough that an extra cow had to die too!
I rode back to Tauranga in high 20's degree heat and felt fine ventilation wise - perforated panels & clever stuff like that. My textile suit is a BMW 2pc with more vents than an air conditioning factory and the Quasi gear breathed quite well by comparison :2thumbsup

As the resident expert at crashing in Quasimoto gear, I would HIGHLY reccommend it... The list of crashes in one single set of leathers which look worse for wear but are still serviceable?

Manfield Lowside 160 kph
Wanganui, stoppy over the bars into haybales
Teretonga, 90 kmph lowside
Teretonga, 220 kmph lowside (with roll)
Taupo, Lowside 110 kmph
Taupo lowside 120 kmph
Manfield, Lowside 150 kph
Manfield, Highside 140 kph
taupo lowside 70 kph
and the most recent, taupo highside 160 kmph.

10 GOOD crashesd on one set of leathers?? That is MINT!
For the record I have only ever had to resew some seams twice.

Eddie (Gixxer) has an auckland showroom, go to www.bikestore.co.nz and get in touch with him via that to see the great range of Quasi gear, works for a muppet like me, so it will be great for any non muppet!

:2thumbsupok went with quasi gear, ended up with the racer 9 sport pants (Yay my first pair of knee sliders woohoo:doctor:) hope they get to see the tarmac lol and the rapid blue sports jacket, it seems they will zip together so hopefully a near equivelent of a 2pce race suit, and blue 104 sports gloves, now me and my 600cc are partially colour coordinated lol

Thank you all for your input i'll feel alot safer than when im in my codura however they will be used for rain riding!:done:

P.S for those who are interested and maybe looking at gear for themselves total price of $1133.00 which is still cheaper than the bottom end race suits and probably alot better quality!

i feel like i got a good deal:banana:

That's the combo I was thinking of too. Although to be honest I'm tempted to go the whole Racer9 hog and get some back in black action :headbang:

I like the flexibility of my 2piece zip together leather suit. I always wear both, but if I stop in town for a bite or to shop, I can take the jacket off and be comfortable.

I've had mine for years. If price isn't a major issue, go for quality and what you like best. After 15 years or more the difference in the initial price won't seem relevent.

Hiya all, thank you baby for coming our way and thanks to all of our awesome supporters, we try our best to make the Brand the best and it seems we can kick the arse of the apparent big brands (alpinestar and spidi etc ) on crashability with ease and this is demonstrated to us time and again, so we must be doing it right. We arent finished soon we will have a better specification (if it was possible) so stay tuned!!

Cheers

My feet felt great...bit hard scraping toes though! And gearchanges become rather painful too
Bret, I had a look at your gloves when I was over. If the pair your offering fit my mits I'll gladly take them off your hands :)
Paula showed me that womens sample jacket too - the creamy white leather one. Sharon may be interested in it, so bring 'em to Paeroa and we'll talk turkey.
Cheers
