lols mate you should see (will see) pics I've found of the like of Castrol 6hr series, bol D'or etc, most of the racers must have had nuts the size of basketballs

It's very sad when you realise the guys you watched as a young chap are now considered 'classics'.

Yeah but these guys inspired the minds of the current fleet of speed merchants, so more respect to them and considering the technology of the time the old racers raced against the odds with a fraction of the budget backing them.

Damn, I nailed those but wasn't around for a couple of days, got any more?

:2thumbsup Yep Wayne on the Mentor Motorcycles CB1100R that he co-piloted with Andrew Johnson. He spent 234mins in the saddle 209 of those leading the race in the wet conditions and all done with a fuelling issue that was only solved 43mins before the finish of the race.

I saw him at a couple of rounds of the transatlantic trohpey here
in the uk in 81. I even got to sit and chat with him outside his caravan (tiny litle 4 berth messy thing) while he was working on the bike. he came over as a real nige bloke. I've still got one of the promotional moriwaki stickers he gave us.

I remember reading in the old days that for the Castrol Six Hour, a team or two used to cheat and put dry ice into the fuel tank so it would turn a 22 litre tank into a 28 litre tank !!!!
Well that was the theory, but sometimes it would expand the tank too quickly with predictable results.
I’m not sure how true all of this is though, perhaps T.W.R. could inform us.

At the NZ races we stuck the fuel in the freezer at the Feilding pub .I remember sitting on the grid with petrol expanding in the hot sun and pissing out the breather .Then one year we blew the tanks to increase capacity. Again another year we actually changed tanks , but that was banned the following year. Gaz.

Sort of explains the casual style on the grid here

There were one or two floating around in Oz though, Peter Barnwell campaigned one at Bathurst in 1980 in the unlimited production class.

The handling quirks were related to proper set-up, steering head tension, wheel alignment, tyre pressures, & heavier fork oil.
The 5 "Blackie" versions were a slight mix with the centre headers being chrome and the outside headers & mufflers black, the centre ones were a different diameter. the also had beefed up clutches, hotter cams, & smooth bore carbs.
The Blackie's debut wasn't to flash with Hiscock's bike blowing a oil seal, Freeth's wrecked a crankshaft, & Chivas' suffering gear selection issues. And the supposedly SP tyres for the bikes wearing out completely after 3hrs (not exactly waht was needed in a 6hr event).

Here's one with UK and NZ links. A bit obscure (I think). Name the rider and the bike. The bike may not be as obvious as it seems.

I'm guessing here as i dont know a lot (read that as anything) about the nz race scene but is rider #111 (pic 1) and middle rider (pic 3) Arron slight ?

As per my last post relating to Aaron, but in the first pic where his number is clearly visible he's actually cutting it with the big boys on a TZR 250

Simon Crafar. That was the easy bit. Identify the bike, but before doing so look closely at the frame spars. Oh- and BTW sorry if this is a bit of a hijack.

it isn't a RC30 or RVF750B so????

It's a Spondon-framed RC30 built for Honda Britain at Crafar's request, and raced by him and subsequently Phil McCallen. I understand Crafar was trying to get OWO1 geometry and combine it with the '30 engine. I somehow ended up with this bike when I purchased a massive job lot of RC30 components a while back. Haven't got it back together yet but am working on it....

How about these three classics?

My guesses are

1. Croz at Daytona;

2. Agostini on the Yamaha, possibly at a reunion event (Assen 1998?);

3. Warren Willing at Bathurst.

Jeff Sayle was my initial thought, but am thinking Gardner at Daytona circa 1980 Moriwaki Kwaka

Ago at Goodwood demo on a 500 Yamaha, ex Sheene. Possibly only a an across the frame 4, not a square 4, but with later suspension

Donny Pask....TZ750

1. Gardner at Daytona
2. Ago at Goodwood
3. Donny Pask....TZ750

1. Correct (wearing Jeff Sayles helmet)
2. Correct
3. Wrong (I don't know of Donny Pask racing anything in his life)

3. Warren Willing at Bathurst.

3. Wrong

Yes it is indeed Ray.

This one should be a bit harder but, a clue is he won the Formula 2 'Marlboro Series' a few years before this shot.

Tricky, there was no F2 Marlboro series (IN NZ I'm assuming you mean).... It was still 250 and 350 racing classes....

A: Des Barry.

Terrence

Maybe I've broken the time line rules but the 'Marlboro Series' of '83 I'm sure had Formula 2. Robert Holden ran 2nd on a modified production bike.

No it's not Des Barry.

Yeah sorry about that it was a 2 meeting series at only Wanganui and Gracefield with 3 races at each and as it was over the Christmas period I just refer to it as the 'Marlboro Series' even though it wasn't. So any idea on this rider then?

Randy Mamola RG500 1979-80 season
8th overall. He only rode the 500 in the 4 rounds
4th overall 250 class behind Kork Ballington, Gregg Hansford and Graziano Rossi (He has a rather famous son)
