OK KB shutterbugs, here's the deal.
I'm covering this weekend's 'Battle of the Streets' Racing at Paeroa for KR and can share some of the wealth.
I have a 6 month subscription to the mag - (or whatever freebies Deano is giving away with new subs if you are already subscribed) for the image the Ed and I choose to call the winnah.
It will be properly credited and reproduced as a half page in mah report. (depending on quality)
To enter:
Post a 1024 x 768 jpeg of your best shot of the day - with the name of the shots clearly stated in the body of the message - maximum of four photos ONLY per photographer - in this thread.
It would be good if you can supply the shot at around 2000pixels or better if you win.
I'll look at all shots on their merits.

hmmmm you omits them if they dont make your acronym sound cool.
For those utter amateur photo takers , what sort of F and exposure times would be good, going with a bright sunny day and being about 40 feet from the bikes??
Or auto all the way?

I get a few solid solid shots in the bank first - fastest shutter speed - highest ISO - then start slowing down and get arty once secure.

The amount of speed blur on the wheels and toothpaste in the background tell the speed tale.
It's also not 'just' an action shot I'm looking for. Maybe it's a babe - or a pit stop?

I found road racing photography a bit of a challenge after MX. Lots of "yellow coats" enforcing no-go areas, so it was hard to get a clear view of the action with a decent backgroud and the long breaks between races kept messing up the camera settings....... Bloody good fun though..... :Punk::Punk::woohoo::woohoo:
Anyway... here's my selection......
1/ Damian Cudlin. YZF1000. Exiting Westpac
2/ Hayden Fitzgerald. Fireblade 1000. Clipping the apex, Westpac
3/ Sidecar Pilates
4/ Those Motards sure have a low fear threshold...!!

So that's why the flag came out so quick. How did that happen? .....Chair #19 didn't move off the line when the flag dropped.
The driver of the chair that went over (was it #11 ??) went right to try and avoid but hit the rear and caused his machine to spin hard left. Too much momentum, crossed up, left side of his chair went skywards.

just for me getting my head around it - please limit it to 4 pics
but also it's a contest of skill - part of that skill is reading the brief, preparing, cropping, adjusting, titling & captioning - and choosing what images you submit. it's not just making the exposure.
It's also not fair on those that have already done the 'down to four' process.

if the names and numbers are wrong sue me, as I took then from the race program
Pic 1 is a minter.
Pic 3 nearly came off really good. Did you go up to #101 and ask him to lean out a little next race for the camera?

Changing the goal posts huh?
Clarification: name of the shot / caption of the shot = same thing.
either way will do - (the better job you do selling it to the editor - the better one's chances.)

just for me getting my head around it - please limit it to 4 pics
but also it's a contest of skill - part of that skill is reading the brief, preparing, cropping, adjusting, titling & captioning - and choosing what images you submit. it's not just making the exposure.
It's also not fair on those that have already done the 'down to four' process.
taa.Sorry BD, how do I remove a pic, would scrub the last pic in my lot.

what!!!! no cunt got a photo of me doing something stupid!!! this has to be rigged!!
Was that you on the black gixxer doing a burnout at the beginning of the back straight?
I got a few shots.
start another thread and I will contribute - you have some contenders - but narrow it down to 4 or you will not win.
An un-captioned photo won't win either.
Has anyone made this thread yet?, if so, link please.

Yes please and I suppose and there is being too picky - it's all meant to be a bit of fun too - 1024px is an attempt at a level playing field for the judging.
Be aware entrants I'll resize them myself for judging - but 1024px would be appreciated.

Hey Guys
Well this is my first attempt at shooting bikes at real speed, and my first post on this forum. I normally shoot dirt bikes, so this did feel different, my shutter speeds came down as I got used to panning at the speed they ride at. I did feel vonrable in certain places as there would have been no time to bail out if I had to. I did enjoy myself, the even terrain and no dust makes a change. However with the track closures etc it was hard to get around everywhere in the time I had. - Here's my favs from the weekend...Cheers
Photo 1 - 51 Ricky McKay entering Fathers Tavern Corner after an awesome drift into it.
Photo 2 - Matt Sadowski Hard to see from this angle but he was dragging his knee on the kerb at the Fathers Tavern Corner
Photo 3 - Hayden Fitzgerald lays it over with his Pirelli's at the Pirelli Corner
Photo 4 - Sadowski Bros, so this is Paeroa...

Dave, you are going to have fun judging this lot.
enjoying it so far. you can see why I only want 4 - or less. (If you have just one killer shot it's fine - four was only because I know how tough it is deciding)
pretty good shortlist already only one winner is as tough as 'only four shots'.
I really would like Mr Ricey to resize correctly too please.
His attachments are 1600 pixels and the contest calls for up to 1024px.
(I'll do it for him if it's a prob.)

To all:
I'll need a full res of which ever pic wins - 2,000 plus pixels or as big as you have it for the print version.
If you can't supply that large it's no biggie - it will just run as a smaller size in the mag.
More room for mine mine mine

I was thinking of making it a poll - but what I'm looking for also has a magazine reproduction and a KR index - lower KB quotient - so I might not necessarily go with the majority.
This is the art director's and the editor's choice for the best fit in the magazine.
cool if someone sets up a KB choice poll independently

So......
Pic 1 - The start of the first classics race was a symphony of thunder.
Pic 2 - Toby Summers hanging it way out coming into the hair pin in the second Supermoto.
Pic 3 - (The programme says Scott Birch was 223 but I suspect that it was Richard Burke 222 on the Katie Emm) A light blue mist of smoke off the rear as Richard Burke slides into the hair pin.
Pic 4 - The bike was a little top heavy so a quick stop to adjust was just the ticket.

Fingers Crossed... 2 of the many great pics taken on the day, wish I could take the credit but these are from my GF.
Notice the foot position on the Harley, outside foot to the rear footpeg to really hang off the bike. He was finishing ahead of a number of sportbikes and easily the most impressive to watch at the hairpin.

Hey thanks everyone, funny thing was I had the shot planned with the banners in the background, on my first shot I blew it as the shot was not sharp, composition was OK, So I waited for the next lap to try again, during the wait a bike came pass and hit the bail and pulled the banner down which is why that shot had the damaged banners in it. It was a heap of fun being there and probably will look at doing more road bike stuff. Best advice I could give you guys who have the same passion is: always look at the background first then work forward to your subject, try and get in a position to get it right, it has helped me a lot, once again Cheers...
