Hop on your race bike and get some results...not many sponsers enjoy sponsering riders that don't excel...or at least improve constantly and quickly!
Out of intrest...you work in the motorcycle industry...have you asked/emailed around industry leaders asking what they look for in sponsering people?? as this may help dramatically in find one/some sponsers..and how you market yourself to them.

Sponsorship is a tough one - for both sides. You need to be able to give the sponsor a list of benefits/returns for the money you're asking. That might sound naff but it doesn't need to be a lot but it does need to be real and you do need to deliver.
When you ask for sponsorship, the only question they're asking themselves is "...what's in it for me...?" So sit down and think about all the things that you can offer them. Off the top of my head...
- the truck painted up in their colours
- displays of the bike at their trade fairs or showroom
- hospitality for your sponsors on race day
- small gifts or momentos of races
- Monday morning race reports! (never miss)
- Team barbeques with your sponsors
- Carrots like invites to the Ducati/Honda enclosure at Phillip Island
You get the idea. It doesn't take much but it does show your committment to them and your appreciation for theitr support.
A first person example: I was Advertining Manager for Honda NZ, I was the guy everyone approached for sponsorship, my budget was in the millions. We sponsored Susan Devoy, World Squash Champion. We gave her a car, paid some of her bills and had regular meetings to keep in touch. What gave us the biggest bang for our buck? It happened at the world champs in England fed live around the world. The players usually mop the court if someone has slipped and got the floor wet. They use their own towels. In the finals Susan mopped the floor, stood up, turned to the cameras, spread her arms wide and showed the world her Honda towel with a big smile. We sponsored her for 5 more years almost based on that one event that showed she really really valued our help. Simple but bloody effective. So when you're world champ .... :)

Great points GRUB!! Have you got a racing CV together?, if not do one including what you are trying to achieve (goals etc) if, when and where there will be TV coverage as grub said what they get for their money etc if you have the ability to get a photo of the bike and get someone to digitally do a mock-up of what the bike would look like with their branding. It is hard work and most sponsorship comes from who you know sadly it is hard to justify the expenditure from a sponsors point of veiw when it comes to bike racing for the simple reason there is F all exposure and generally speaking it is a very small demographic that are watching. Good luck!! if I think of anyone I'll post.

What Grub said!
If I was one of your sponsors I would like to know.....
whats in it for me?
what do you hope to get from me?
what results have you acheived to date?
what are you planning to do this season? (what events/races) programme planning
whats the projected total cost of the season & how much of this cost are you hoping be covered by sponsors (whats your $$ input)
what are your goals for this season & further in the future?
are there different levels of sponsorship and costs involved at these different level?
If you have these sort of things in place in an easy to read or understand format that you can present to prospects I know you should find it a little easier to gain sponsorship.
As a business owner I like to be able to quickly make an informed decision and see that people approching me are professional and serious about what they are pitching to me. Lots of people bin it with me when they are asking me to put my hand in my pocket or my businesses pocket because they dont really have clear and tangable ideas or results.

An aside, and quite possibly an urban legend:
McLaren had a car crash and flip upside down at a grand prix a few years back. I think there was a collision at the exit of a corner (?) and as a result the car slid upside down, at great speed and with much spectacle down half the length of the start finish straight - with cameras panning to follow it, clearly. When it finally came to a halt, Ron Dennis turned to one of his minions and said "*WHY* don't we paint the sponsors logo's underneath?"

He doesn't have the figure for that.:Pokey:
Just kidding Martin. I dont thinkn it matters what the company actually does or sells, Johan Brunns was mainly sponsored by a scrap metal dealer of all things. It's hit and miss untill ya find someone into bikes, and passionate about the sport. Sell it man, it's possible to get people excited about going to the toilet if you're energetic enough and highlight the good points.

Its about personal relationships as well. If you actually have a relationship with a potential sponsor, that will go a really long way. Recommend that you make a list of all sorts of people you know and approach them for support. I had all my accomodation, transport, meals and fees paid once by a sponsor just cause I asked and everyone was too scared to approach him for fear of being declined! So being bold and upfront can also pay dividends.
But be realisitic as well, racing does require you to put a lot of your own time and money in, if you can convince others to pay for your playtime all the better!
