CBR250R smokin! (in a possibly bad way)

I've been made aware that my bike is smoking on rides (black smoke, not evil blue smoke) I'm unsure exactly at what point it is occuring, but my throttle is either fully open or fully closed, and I'm guessing it's when I close the throttle entering a corner.

Does anybody have any suggestions about what this might be? Such as a need for the carbs to be serviced, or whether this might be the sign of engine trouble.

Alternatively can anyone suggest possible steps to further diagnose the issue?

I'd hate to have to buy a 600cc bike just to get around this problem..

Everything looked OK when I was following you home from Taupo last weekend. :ride: Apart from the ocassional whiff of unburnt fumes I didn't notice any smoking. When did this start happening ?

Not sure eh. I wasn't going hard on the way back from Taupo, had it part throttle at 10-14k most of the time.

I think it only happens when I'm trying to coax every last little hp out of the poor thing. Maybe it's the only way it knows how to express pain :spudwhat:

Yeah, I'll be in the 8.30am group from TVNZ.

Does this mean that I will have to thrash the crap out of my angry sewing machine so you could see what it looks like? I'm sure that's the only possible way you *might* be behind me..

If it was rings, valveguides etc the smoke would be more blue/white. In my experience darker smoke indicates excessive fueling, ie running too rich. It sounds as though you might need to get the carbs checked. Just how excessive is it anyway? Report back.

nothing wrong with running a little rich. a bit of excess fuel helps your pistons cool down, and since you are flinging the hell out of it anyway your plugs should be fine.

Slower response, higher fuel consumption, and excessive richness will not only cool the pistons, it will help wash that nasty oil off your cylinder linings. Anyway, why would you want/need extra piston cooling on a street ridden std bike?
