Important day in my country yesterday - our chosen reps said errrr. We f*cked up.

>> I’d like your elucidation and/or comment on is as follows:
> If the apology was 361 words long and reading of it started at 9am sharp (“to the minute”) and completed by 9.30am, does this make it the slowest speech in the history of Westminster-style Parliaments anywhere (12 words per minute). Does your PM suffer from a terrible speech impediment?
> Is it usual to receive a standing ovation before delivering a speech in Australia?
> Do you find it strange that former prime ministers etc. were reduced to sitting on the floor? Have the seats been given away as part of the compensation deal?

Japes aside, a truly significant and symbolic moment. Good on them.
Regards

I firmly believe no one was more instrumental than changing Australians perceptions and beliefs than Midnight Oil. Good on'em I say.

Good on the pollies apologising as well. 10/10 Australia.

Yep, having been at work where we get all the Oz TV there were a lot of people quite overwhelmed by the gesture yesterday. It was long overdue I reckon and a positive step change compared to the last head in the sand Government response to the issue.
Then I walk into smoko and cop the bogan brigade bleating about how people should just "get over it".......kind of hard to do when you or your loved ones have lived the experience for as long a you/they can remember.
I think any right thinking people will see it as a great gesture, I certainly do.

The Ozzies are coming out of the dark ages. Now we just wait for the day when they come in to the 21'st century...

I thought the speech was delivered at a respectable pace. Rudd took his time and delivered it with the reverence it deserved.

If he tried to rush it, it would look like another slap in the face.

Well it's done and it would be good if it ended there, but they've just opened a can of worms.

Edit: Geez, never saw this coming... http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/1/story.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10492348

I say do it. If 400 ish words can save the taxpayer squillions of dollars then I'd do it in a heartbeat. If it adds fuel to the fire however...

Don't worry, technology has moved on a great deal, Twangatitis (or Nasalosity as it is otherwise known) is completely reversible today. Just keep her away from Supermarkets, before you know it she'll be in some dowdy uniform asking for a price check on thongs.

It is about time but the Abbo's are so totally different from the western australian culture/society its hard to see how things will end well for them.

Sorry Day was celebrated at my workplace too...

I am the OHS manager at an Aboriginal / Torres Strait islander Uni in Batchelor, the batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education (www.batchelor.edu.au) the speeches were very emotional and the feeling of unity was amazing!

You all have a happy valentines day too!

Don't worry - Turia wants more than just words - "In an apparent reference to the Australian apology, she said that from Maori experience an apology with inadequate compensation "is merely an exercise in pragmatism rather than nation-building or justice"."

Not that they haven't already recieved a few pretty good handouts but they'll be after more (and more, and more, and more...)
