bike in a box

I am at my wits end ...my hair is getting exceeding grey..
Finally have bike back together (ish) and It was going and now its not.
Its a kawasaki GPZ 250 86/87.. Have test all the wiring and found (coming out of the junction box ) one dead wire that leads to the starter lock out, the other wire that leads to the starter lock out is reading positive when it should be negative AND the wire that runs from the starter button to the junction box, which should be negative is dead except when the starter button is pressed and then it reads positive?? Its madness!
Does anyone have any brilliant ideas.. every thing else in the system is good ..these are the only things out of whack and i cant figure how to cure them... HELP!!!
