Got Mac. Leopard, Intel based machine. Just bought a Mac compatible external USB Hard drive. Click on the install button and...
FUCKEN NOTHING!!!

Okay, forget about some virgin, pimple faced, graduates code... I'll just reformat it as a HD so it looks like a massive storage device (which is what I want).

How the fuck do I do it? Mac's HD Utility doesn't appear to have a simple "Fuck the drive, reformat the bitch" button.

Help please...

if disk utility can see the drive then :

change the partition type to one, click apply ?

Eh? Plug in unformatted USB drive into Windoze box. "this drive isn't farking formatted jimmy. Do ye want tae format it?". How easy is that? Use the Disk Management Plugin if you must.

Obviously I'm running Vista Ultimate Scotsman Edition.

Next time get an Ethernet enclosure for yer drive ya tight git.

You missed the dozen or so blue screens and 3 rebuilds in-between.

Was the reason you couldn't write to the drive was it was formatted NTFS?

Macs won't write to an NTFS drive although they can read one.

I've heard it's a licensing issue (ie Apple won't pay $$$ to MS for right to use) but haven't seen official confirmation of that so who knows.

Everything seems to just work for me regardless - mac, windoze, linux. I must be doing something wrong. :pinch:

click on the HD icon then uses "apple and i" keys to get "info" and you can change permisions form read only to "read write"

or just use "disk utility" to Erase disk and format however you like

Yeah, it was formatted as NTFS so a quick re-format did the trick.

easiest way, since most drives are sold for PC use. I bought a Seagate FreeAgentPro drive, and that had some good backup software on it, for PC.. just formatted it, and it's all mine..

Finn, you're not a great ambassador for the Mac community, are ya?!

That's exactly the same drive I bought.

Sorry for letting the team down. I'm not really worthy of a Mac however, I blame JVC for an HD camera that doesn't work with Leopard & QT 7.4. If it did, none of this would have happened.

I've got a PC in the workshop that's been quite happily running XP since 2001 with no hassle whatsoever. BSOD's are usually caused by viruses or cheapo RAM and seem to far more prevalent when teenagers are around.

Let me disprove your theorem:

1. You work with images on a professional level.
2. Ergo - you use a Mac.
3. You post in response to my post.
4. Ergo - you care about "that shit".
5. QED ;)

(6. I just acknowledged that Macs are superior for handling images - gather from that what you can.)

riffer
16th February 2008, 13:37
TBH there's not a lot of difference in file handling now.

Actually, there's a number of apps available in linux and windows space that handle multipage tiff format - I've yet to see an app (except running in X11 environment) that will do that on the Mac.

Likewise for a G4 compressed bitmap tiff.

It's all about the interface mate. Little things matter. Number one - the title bar always at the top of the screen. I've lost count of the amount of times that I've clicked on the wrong title bar in Windows. Also on the Mac in a dialog box it will say "Do you want to do this?" and the reply options are Yes, No, or Other. On a PC it may not say Yes or No, and it's always inconsistent.

Much more consistent on the Mac.

And so much nicer looking that Aero.

Care about whining about what platform I meant. What. Ever.
It doesn't make any difference any more. Just personal preference.

Indeed, there are good things about the Macs - and you can often get better hardware and better design for less money by going Mac.

Doesn't change the fact that it's one of the great schisms in the modern world ;)

I grew up with DOS and damn I still miss it some times. However, computers - for better and for worse - are much more accessible for the masses these days. I'm still a sucker for old computer games and until recently that was one thing you couldn't hope to do on a Mac. And now I'm pretty much used to XP - no reason to change to Vista or Mac for me.

One thing I don't like about Apple though is the massive marketing trip they're running (iPods, iPhones, iTunes, etc.) I don't like the image, I don't like the message and I don't like smooth metrosexual bullshit that seems to permeate it all. -But hey, that's just me ;)

Well it shouldn't. Dialog boxes on OSX should contain verbs, not "yes, no, cancel" but "save, delete, blow-out-of-arse". This is one of the key things that makes the OSX UI better. Dammit, I'm going to have to use an example again:

"The file is write protected, do you want to cancel saving?"
"Yes; No"

In this case "Yes" means the opposite of what you actually want it to do. Bzzzt!

"The file is write protected, do you want to cancel saving?"
"Don't Save; Save anyway"

Is the right way to do it. Broadly.

there's a few things that don't follow simple rules, I've noticed.. But I've found more illogical things with Vista than anything else I've ever used. I think it's bordering too many cooks, and not enough 'someone should check everything for consistency..' I think Leopard is better, from what I've seen. But I don't have it yet.

anyway, for you Dave..

no arguments about this, but what happens if you click save anyway? Since it can't overwrite the file, should it or does it (i don't use a mac, i don't think the right way and they are awkward for me) open the save as dialog?

RantyDave

With any luck it pops up a dialog box with a better example. I was kinda short on inspiration.

Can't say I dislike Vista - haven't tried it.

Point is that I can't see why I would want to - XP is reliable, stable and I know it somewhat well by now.

Just like when they introduced Windows 95. I didn't bother installing it until all the new interesting games required DirectX. DOS was faster, more efficient and much more stable.
