2008 BEARS Sound of Thunder
25th Anniversary

Where: Ruapuna
When: 23rd and 24th February 2008. THATS THIS WEEKEND!

This is the 25th Anniversary of this event, and I'm told it will be huge in terms of competitor numbers. I spoke to a member of the committe on Tuesday and was told that they had around 50 entries just in F1, with the usual rush of late entries expected on top of that.

There has been radio advertising, but I think that a lot of people still don't know this event is on. Spread the word!
The club news letter arrived a last week, and they are looking for prominent locations to put up some signage advertising this event. If you can help out, please send me a PM

SOT RACE FUNCTIONS
Friday night at the track after scrutineering there is a reunion BBQ for all present and past riders.
There will be footage & photos of past events etc, and of course the bar will be open.
So if you know of anybody who has raced SOT please do invite them along.

BIKE SHOW
There will be a bike show this year to be held on the left hand side area just after entering the gates. This will take place on the Sunday. There will be product prizes for the best of each BEARS class e.g Harley, Ducati & Triumph. And there will also be a peoples choice award. This show is open to the general public to enter. Just ride your bike in, register before 12pm on Sunday, and your free to go and watch the racing. Lets face it, if you've got a nice bike, people are going to look at it anyway, so why not put it in the show and see if you can win something? This area will also be cordoned off to motorcycle parking only as well as some trade displays.

BRITTENS AND OTHER PAST SOT BIKES ON DISPLAY
There will be four Brittens on display, and a Britten will be doing laps during the lunch break on Sunday. When was the last time you saw a Britten in action? For my money, thats worth $10 right there. There will also be bikes from previous SOT's on display.

Further info is available from here (http://www.bearsracingnz.com/)

Quite simply this is one of the best Motorcycle race events held in NZ and at one stage was the biggest in Australasia

Its not prominent but I've had the poster up at work for weeks

I am supposed to be there on my Monster, racing with the number 159.

Someone else get your normal number?

Someone else get your normal number? 159 is the number MNZ gave me. 144 is already taken by a local ER650 rider who's name escapes me....but its nothing to do with numbers...more the tanks sudden inability to contain fuel.:(

I haven't seen or heard any advertising & it's less than a week away-unreal they really need to advertise more.

Stupid would be an understatement re lack of advertising:blank:

TonyB
17th February 2008, 15:55
Don't have the official word for the lack of advertising. My guess would be the usual- lack of resources.

If you look at the committee, nearly all of them race. If they're anything like me, they'll have enough trouble just organising the event and getting themselves ready.

Then what they should do is hire an events manager to run it

I'm not on the comittee, and therefore have no idea why theres no advertising. I really don't want to get drawn into a big pointless discussion about this.

The racings on. It should be a goodie. Get down there and watch it!

This use to be a huge event, I think it reached its pinnacle when the Aussies use to come over by the container loads.
Unfortunately the last few years it seems nothing more than a glorified club day, but the bracket racing is a great concept!
Still might have to wander out and check it out! 25 years!? crikey, have to be worth getting a tee shirt for that! :2thumbsup

Dieselpig will be racing on a Ducati 400F3

And of course Drew and Flame will be racing too.

I hope lots of spectators come to support the event.

Dieselpig will be racing on a Ducati 400F3 Really? Sweet! Where did he score that from? I hear Tony Mac might have a "Ducati 500" which I assume would be a Pantah in time for the meet as well. Hopefully I can mix it up with them and have some good racing. tony and i had some awesome dices last year.

Cool, I haven't met either of them yet.

Thanks luv! I'm gonna need it just to be able to turn up

As for DP...I'm just hoping I can keep up:laugh: Funnily enough though, hard on the gas in a straight line theres bugger all difference between a 400SS and a 750SS. Same for the 750 and the 900. I hear this Pantah(?) of Tonys has been worked a bit, so I may not see which way he went

I can't remember the last time I saw a Britten actually running rather than just on display. I'd happily pay $10 just to see one in action again

Yeah, thats whats been missing! If you went to the first few SOT's you actually saw the evolution of the Britten. Each year John would have something more and more radical as he kept pushing the boundaries.

I reckon it will be a great day....

You getting excited yet Tony?

:wari:Getting there! I've actually been stressing more than anything...I had a bit of a disaster...
Email I sent yesterday
So what’s happened? The tank has expired! The tank has always been a bit damp on the bottom left hand side, but has never leaked enough to form a drip. The tank has some huge dents in it hiding under the filler, so I didn't see the point in fixing it, instead keeping my eye on various auctions looking for a decent tank. As luck would have it, I got back from holiday last weekend to see that the tank was now leaking badly, so I booked it in to be patched up on Monday. As I was taking the tank off yesterday, I very gently bumped or scraped the rusted area and ended up with a good sized hole...and a fair amount of petrol on the floor and engine. A poke around with a screwdriver quickly created a whole heap more. It can hopefully be patched up, and Murray at the Bumper Shop will be looking at it tomorrow. But if it can’t and if I can’t find a replacement my SOT will effectively be over

I’m keeping philosophical about it- the rust was that bad that it could well have ruptured while I was racing, potentially turning me and the bike into a nice big fireball!
It looks like it can be patched up. There is another option on TM, but I'd rather not put that tank on this bike.

Yeah, thats whats been missing! If you went to the first few SOT's you actually saw the evolution of the Britten. Each year John would have something more and more radical as he kept pushing the boundaries.I can remember sitting at Pothole and feeling the ground vibrate at the Britten came through- they certainly used to draw the crowds. Part of it could be that the change in Superbike rules to 1000cc fours meant that few/no top riders were racing BEARS equipment in NZ or OZ

TonyB
19th February 2008, 19:34
One of the Committee told me today that they have just had confirmation that there will be four Brittens on display, and that a Britten will definitely be doing laps during the lunch break on Sunday.

They are very keen to have people bring their bikes along for the bike show. Dangerous, Rashika, Tuono, Mr Sensible, MV Nut.... whatcha doing on Sunday??

I have shit to do on Saturday but am definitely going out on Sunday. If I see you I will come say Hi!

Tony, re the fuel tank:

I saw a bike last year (Ducati racebike too) and the guy had a full on racebike fuel cell on specially made brackets on his bike. Looked quite small but had the filler and proper filler and all. That was covered by a fibreglass tank cover which looked like something that had been made from the original tank. Might that be an option for your bike?

I can't recall when or where I saw it though.

I've been dissappointed with the lack of advertising. It's only through KB that I actually knew it was on. Unfortunately theres that AutoX show on this weekend as well. That will probably draw the crowds

I agree the advertising has been a shocker, and thats sad!

Well my bells have been attached, and I am looking forward to waving and wahoo'ing at Flame, Drew and everyone else as they leave the pit lane!

TonyB
20th February 2008, 12:21
Tony, re the fuel tank: Thanks- yes thats the plan in the long run. I have been talking to the guy that does them all locally. The tank on the Monster is EXTREEMELY vulnerable in a crash, they also have a nasty habit of rusting. All I need is a decent tank to have a mold made from. In the meantime my tank has been soldered up and should do the trick for a while yet.

Truely though, it's going to be the most awesome weekend, I have dreamed of riding there for the last four years, and finally thanks to a very special bunch of guys n gals that sponsor us, Drew and I are on the Ferry heading down tomorrow night :)
....They are all coming down too,to support Drew and I and enjoy the atmosphere. What a weekend this will be. I just cant wait to see, hear, and totally enjoy being part of the biggest NZ BEARs event we are fortunate enough to have.

Either number means people will HAVE to qualify if they wanna start, or is capacity there higher than up here?

Either number means people will HAVE to qualify if they wanna start, or is capacity there higher than up here? From what I understand there will be about a dozen competitive F1 bikes in the field... what they do is encourage cross entering of classes. That brings up the numbers, the vibe etc.... so there wont be 40 or 50 bikes at your level.

Kickaha has raced in races with over 40 bikes in the class at SOT.

So yeah a slightly different approach.

woo hooo!!!

i've raced in a few

Dave Moore (Morbidelli) and Grub first sorted me out with a Montessa when I arrived in Christchurch: I got a couple of thirds and a 4th after crashing on the 1st right hander.............but I loved it.

Later I helped run the meeting

The best race meeting in New Zealand at the time. The best race meetings ever according to very partial parties.

Congratulations BEARs, I'm proud to have served

There used to be a guy on a full dress Harley who 'raced' with his stereo on full, in an open face, smoking a cigar!!!!

watching Payney and Lindsay beating up on each other was kinda fun too and when Dave Moore wound up his 125 Morbidelli GP bike to annihalate the 400 class..................whew! those were the days

and the Britten would turn up at practice unanounced....

Happy Birthday Broz

What is it with you north island lot and having to sit ya arses on the ground while in mid flight
a very different day today with both the 749's arseing up and both doing bloody well Drew holding 4th out a 50 in A bracket racing which means he was up against Jrod Love etc... pitty his fuel line came apart after the bump it had earler and after flicking the birdie at Nicko as he passed soon drifted to the side of that track.

Ok so more to come including why the Duc team have lazy bikes and needing a nap mid race with pics of the day ... cooming soon.

BTW the guys did farking well... most impressed

yeah i think an old Duc was a bit jealous of Flames new duc and decided to bump her off the track. She has a couple of bruises, but they managed to get her bike back up and running again (in one race!) after replacing the clutch and gear levers ( i think those was the main issues) and bandaging it up a bit.
Luckily the bloke was still down cos i think Flame mighta given him a bit of biffo if he jumped up again.
He def came of worse for wear, think he went off to hospital in the end.

And Drew decided to run up the arse of someone, and took a woopsie over the bars... same corner as Flame. But the awesum pit crew managed to get him going again for his next race.

I spent the day taking pics, so theres some goodies to come

Ha! That camera looks hard case stting on my noggin'
What an awesome weekend. I gradually got faster as the weekend went on, got some mint footage with the helmet cam, though I ran out of recording time after only three races- the last three were pretty awesome but didn't get any footage. Thanks to Stanko for the lend of the camera!

Race of the day would have to be the Flying Farewell. It was red flagged and restarted. Ended up behind Darryl Heman on his farken great Harely 1340. My gawd that man can ride! Its hard not to get mesmerised by THAT much metal going that hard! Got past him and a 750SS that was also having difficulty with him as well. Got to the hair pin thinking "That'll be the last I see of him", buggered up my braking, locked it up a bit etc and then this farken great Harley comes past again! WTF? So me and the SS start chasing him again. The SS got him, then as I was right behind him in the infield I noticed oil was splattering out of the engine or gearbox and onto the exhaust. I was trying to get the marshalls to take notice and when they didn't I backed off a bit. Then I realised that they weren't going to black flag him, and since I was still behind him I was in danger of being the first one to find his oil. So I took off again, went round him at the sweeper and went as hard as I could. He didn't manage to come by me on the straight so I just kept at it. And you know what? Being chased by an oil spluttering Harley which is being piloted by a very good loose unit of a rider is a bloody good way to improve your riding! All of a sudden it was "Mr knee slider, meet Mr Track" on every corner- this has been a problem for a while, I couldn't get them to talk to each other before. Suddenly I was way more comfortable and pushing much harder, winding the throttle hard open while fully cranked over and knee on the ground- awesome feeling....though probably not achievable on something thats actually got some power:cool:. I left Mr Heman behind and after the race came into the pits to find oil all over my bike, leathers and helmet....

Awesome racing. Can't wait for the BEARS Winter Series now!

Thanks R! I'm finally starting to feel like a half decent rider. The dipper has always been my worst corner, and funnily enough it finally clicked on the warmup lap for the last race. Once I got past Heman I had my knee well down in there, which I honestly thought would never happen! One thing I have noticed is that I tend do what the guy in front of me is doing and just follow them through the bend instead of pushing for a way around. Watching the footage I took, I also take about two or three laps to get into it, loosing ground initially then getting faster as it goes on. Now I seem to have the mid corner and exit sorted I just have to get the entry and braking nailed down and I'll be happy.

Wicked day again! Scored the wee box at the back of the bar with the best view (apart from denny hulme) and shade, company and grog.
No grizzling from me.

Cheers for the pics guys, and every thing else you did for us over the weekend. Too much to say so it can wait for my race report, except how awesome you were, and how proud I am of my girl for coming so far with her riding in just three days, you were amazing all weekend gorgeous:love:.

And that after some set up and tyre problems I managed to finally gell with my bike, really stoked to have it doing what I'm telling it now, rather than just being along for the ride.

oh yeah and did we mention it was 31 degrees today... AT LEAST that at ruapuna. So all the racers and even a few of the spectators did exceedingly well to survive the heat and the racing.
Well done guys! :msn-wink:

Thanks so much for the pics Rashika! (except the weirdo chick with black hair posing on MY bike! who the hell let that happen:shit::msn-wink:) and you and Dangerous contributed to our weekend in so many ways. Your hospitality and entertainment help make the whole weekend outstanding:first:. We want to do the same for you both sometime real soon. (dont bring the cat though eh!)

No race report from me, the sad news of a very special friend of ours misfortune on the road yesterday has made the hype and excitement seem distant for now.

but some highlights of the weekend that I will share,(there were many....but too many to list)

Adoring a track I had never seen before
Coming front half of F1 and lapping back markers:woohoo:
Qualifying front row of Grid B, and after crashing in F1 and feeling a bit second hand and the ass ripped out of my leathers (today discovering I had torn lots of the ligaments and ruptured a tendon in my hand :pinch:)managed to come in 12th both races.
Meeting some fantastic KB'rs (Joni, MVNut and lovely family, TonyB and many more) and loads of other great peeps
Being interviewed by some foreign magazine:rolleyes:
Watching Drew totally obliterate most of the A field in total style!

BUT MOSTLY....our more than FANTASTIC sponsors and pitcrew that worked SO hard after I binned to get 99 back up and running for my 1st grid race. There is not another crew in the world that make racing so fantastic. They are stars :clap:and I am so fortunate and honered to ride for them.

But then there was the weekend lows...

The disapointment of being taken out in my 3rd F1 race in the 1st lap by some tard on a bike less pretty than mine! knowing it was my best start of the meeting. But the poor guy come of a lot less fortunate than me. (truely hope he is ok)

Seeing Drew's bike burst a fuel line after he moved into 4th and gapped it in A grid on near the last lap:stupid:

But the biggest low...hearing the sad news of one of our most closest friends having a very nasty incident. And not being able to do squat to help him in any way. A much loved friend by many and I know many peoples thoughts are with him right now along with mine. Heal fast Sean!!! We are all with you.

And....well I guess that kinda turned into a 'race report' afterall huh!

Drew, you were doing exceptionally well out there on that last race, taking down each rider in the same passing manouvre, same spot where you had previously done the woopsee. :pinch:

Was a bit gutted to see you banging the tank in frustration in that last lap or so, after making it to 4th place. Still, not bad for the first time at Ruapuna and the first time for the SOT... so we will catch you again next year huh? :niceone:

Did anyone get a good photo of all the Brittens lined up?

I mentioned it on www.thekneeslider.com and the guy who runs the site emailed me asking for a photo.

Dont worry I wont steal your thunder, and will credit you for the photo!

I didnt get a shot because there were people all over them everytime i went over there.

email tim[at] cordner.co.nz if you did, and tell me how you want to be credited.

Cheers SDU, it was such an awesome weekend, I really had expected that I would be last in F1 after I saw the 50+ field. It was a huge surprize for me to find myself catching back markers by the 4th lap.

Hopefully next time I wont get punted off the track tho LOL. It would be GREAT to see some more chicks out there! Rashika!!!!!! the buells coming out next year with your butt on board!

And some fantastic racing out there guys! was entertainment plus both watching and competing. The most fun Ive had on the track ever!:2thumbsup

anddddddddddddddddddddd................ what did he get should be about 83hp at the wheel?

Yeah that about what I got, 82-83 hp at 7000-7500 rpm and about 66 lb-ft torque at 5700 rpm on a real hot day (35 deg's).
Nice curve (on both) with no dips and the bike is standard apart from Pod filters and I have opened up the exhaust a bit.
Like to see what it would have been on a cooler day now.
I wanted it to cool off before I tried and as you know it didn't.

Now I have to get the Daytona up on it.

Back when boys were men eh!:first: Would have been great to have been racing there when it was drawing crowds by the thousands. With more publicity I wonder if it can get there again. Great write up in Aussie Two Wheels this month. Hopefully that may promote a few more Aussie's to come back next year:)

I think it was then biggest meeting in Australasia at one stage, the first one was a glorified club day and then it got bigger and bigger, it's still pretty good but not as big as it used to be
