View Full Version : Funny little hand gesture?

I was riding home from Clevedon show grounds after watching my better half do the SUB cycle race and past 2 bikers who both did some weird hand gesture, couldn't quite make out what it was ... but figured it might be a Kiwi Biker thing?

Just to clarify, I wasn't being flipped off ... thats one gesture I'm well aware of ;)

EDIT: Because assumption and perception are wonderful and terrible things, I know what a nod, wave, flip off, "your indicator is on", pull over, stop, warning hand gesture looks like.

I'm not trying to 'troll' and I'm not trying to insight a riot, I was simply wondering if (mainly) was it anyone who posts here who did that so I can know what it was.

**note to self, it seems there are many unspoken rules to posting a thread here :(

You could perhaps give us a hint ... if it was waving a finger or hand in circles then they were trying to tell you there was a cop up ahead.

y'know whirr whirr round and round like flashing lights

You're right, sorry, they both pulled their left hand close to their chest and did something with their fingers, as it was open road and they were going in the opposite direction I couldn't really see what it was ... must've been around 3ish Sunday afternoon

The Kiwi Biker *wave* involves removing both hands from the bars and demonstrating to other bikers how a bike can be steered by bodyweight positioning, rather than the hackneyed myth of countersteering...

OK, you might be trolling, but you just might be a noob. Bikers wave at other bikers - generally. Or nod their heads. Except BMW riders, harley riders ... yada yada yada (link to a squillion threads - some funny, some insulting, arguing about who waves to whom). Sometimes the process of controlling 200kgs & 80hp on a greasy road with a cage trying to take you out means that you don't wave to another biker.
This is never OK and is never forgotten. A thread will be posted about "that bastard who rides a (insert approx bike)"

If you want to 'get in' on the great wave debate, or join the never-ending "should KB have its own wave" then do a little search, and you'll be as happy soon as a pig in shit.

Welcome to KB. I'm gesturing to you now (its friendly people)

does that apply to BMW riders too?
I rode past a 'club ride' (I can only assume), of BMW riders, and not bloody one of them nodded/waved back. I vote BMW the snobiest rider of the lot

Welcome! Mmmm, it might seem like that, but don't be afraid to post. Generally most of it comes fairly easily, and you get a mixture of people making you feel like a complete idiot and some who are really nice and helpful. Ignore the posts from people who make you feel dumb, and learn from the ones where people take you seriously! :)

Didn't you notice that they had their mirrors angled up to check themselves out?

BMW riders don't wave. They waggle an eyebrow instead. But only if you have at least 16 quarterings or are in the Almanche de Gotha. It was nothing personal, they just didn't notice you. Do you wave to the worms that crawl beside the road as you ride past ?

Much will be forgiven the rider of a GN250. They have a good attitude.

Maybe they could have been talking and that gesture could mean "me too" used when asked if you need to stop for a leak/food or gas. ??? but then only one of them would be doing the gesture. hmmm... just a thought.

Most certainly. I have always observed that those who start out on GN250s and stick with them make the best long term riders.

When the rain is bucketing down, and the winds howling, and I'm riding to werk, the motorway will be deserted of other bikes. Except the ginnies, they'll still be there puttering into the teeth of the gale. They're always out there, no weekend warriors they.

yeh (this should be in another thread but what are you gonna do) theres the americarna (yep, thats how its spelt) festival on here this weekend coming and theres a gazillion harley riders buzzing around town (dropping chrome parts, spraying oil everywhere) and they never bloody wave. i figure if they take a hand off the bars the vibrations and shit-poor geometry will make the bike drop out from under them. laws of physics are against them.

my brother rides a bmw k75 and a k100 (he also owns a mean, angry triumph chopper with 5 foot forks) and he waves to people. then again..the first bike he owned, and has for 3 years, and did the cold kiwi on almost every year, was a ginnie.

oh yeh.

I ride a BMW and I nod at all the bikers I see, and I gotta tell ya, I get very little love in return. :weep: It was better when I had a sprotsbike - at least the other sprotsbikers gave me props. Personally I think it's just the fact that there used to be less bikers out there and it felt like you were part of a small, friendly community. These newschool dudes just need to be educated, so keep waving and nodding people. They will catch on eventually. Except for the stupid ones.

damn that cycle race was ANNOYING AS HELL. PAY SOME SORT OF DAMN ROAD TAX YOU GREENIE PRICKS. AND RIDE SINGLE FILE, YOU ARE GUESTS ON THE ROAD STOP ABUSING IT.

When I see cycleists riding two/ three/ four+ wide I really wish I had a really loud two stroke!

I'm not on the roads at the moment, but i usually do an army type salute, or do the full heil hitler.

If going for it on twisties a simple nod suffices.
