Hey everyone,
So I was umm-ing and ahh-ing over whether to get an fxr and which pretty colour to pick late last year when I saw a cbr250rr, went :gob: then  then bought it. Now I'm wondering if it was the right choice. The thing's damn heavy... I'm curious as to what more experienced bikers think - will the weight get easier to handle the more I ride it, or shall I sell and look to buy a littler one?

The fxr is light and a wonderful machine. I found it hard going in the winds here in wellington, and that was my issue with it .. .starting up the Gorge at 90 and at the top going less than 70 ... not too safe. It really depends on what you are going to use it for ... and how much/often etc. You get used to any bike .. and you may just need to give yourself a little time to get used to the cbr .. it will offer you more challenges than the FXR will that is for sure.

Where do you live chicky? Do you have anyone nearby that can come over and help you out and give you some advice with a few things? I reckon you'll probably be very happy that you got the CBR once the Welly wind picks up. I used to literally get blown of the road on my lil 150!
Once you get riding it and getting some confidence and experience then you'll be fine!

Hey, you get used to moving a slightly heavier bike around eh... its just a comfort thing eh. Yeah, give a welly region as theres a few chicks (or guys) around teh Capital that would give you a hand if thats more what you want.

CBR is fine to learn on - its not heavy - really.

AFter a wee while you will find it light - then jump on a bigger bike and try and stand that up!

CBR is a lovely little bike - it wont bite if you treat her nice.
Just always respect it, take it easy and stay safe.

Goodluck!

The cbr is light enuf, you wouldnt want anything lighter in the welly winds anyway, and if memory serves (i could be wrong) its lighter than the zxr and most other 250 4strokes?

How long have you had it? after a while you'll get used to the weight.

Go the lil cbr....... I envy how you feel i cant wait to get something heavier and bigger. well if you like getting naked you could always get your self a horney hornet?:2thumbsup 150kg dry weight. cant member what the cbr is, but i throw mine around quite easily and it still a bigish bike.

I know when we first got my bike I was scared shitless because of it's weight and my slight build but now I'm getting used to it. I don't know what a cbr weighs but I think if you just practice your riding and go out on her heaps then you'll adjust to it fairly quickly.

I agree, hang in there, just take it nice and easy and see if it gets easier over time. Most of us worry about the weight of our bikes (maybe this is a generalisation, but perhaps women tend to worry about this a little more than guys as we often don't have brute force to assist us usually). Mine weighs 214kg dry and have dropped it once. Quickly looked up how to lift a heavy bike from the ground, but haven't needed to put the technique into practice yet! Confidence will come and it would be such a shame to part prematurely with a bike that you love!

Unless you upgrade to an 07-08 CBR600RR that is... It's dry weight is *LESS* than the CBR250's. Shocked me when I found out the 600 dry weight is 155kg vs 158kg for the 250 :gob:

I remember the first time I was on a motorcycle with gears and a clutch. I thought it was freakin' HUGE! It was a Honda CB250 (single cylinder 250cc bike - a tiny commuter) before that it had just been a Puch 50cc 2 stroke and push bikes.

It's all relative. Basically anything under 600cc is small and anything lighter than 180kg is light....for the first year of riding you just don't realise this.

Welcome to 2 wheels and an engine :)

That's not a heavy bike.

THIS is a heavy bike

<img src=http://www.summitbosshoss.com/images/VanquishTruefire014.jpg>

You'll get used to it. CBR250 is a nice size for a learner. When I was a learner bikes were a lot heavier.

You'll be fine! Time and riding (lots and lots of riding) will make you wonder why you thought it was the wrong bike.

When you first start the smaller 250 bikes seem heavy and big, but once you've become a seasoned rider you'll discover they're tiny compared to the big bikes (which won't be so daunting in times to come).

I moved from my RG150 to a GSX750F, longer, heavier and handles totally differently to the RG (still adapting to the changes!) but I love my new bike and I can say if I looked and sat on it when I was a noob, I wouldn't have thought I'd be okay with the weight and size. You get used to these things with time and riding experience.

Go - get out there and ride, and then ride some more. Being a bit nervous and having respect for your ride is a healthy thing.

Size / weight means nothing. Just stick to it and you'll be alright. Be careful about parking it though. You don't want to park it in a way where you can't get enough leverage back it out.

CBR250RRRRRRRRR a heavy bike? Y'ain't seen nothin' yet!

Stick with it. You just have to learn to balance it as you move it around. If you're a wee 'un, one day you'll find yourself riding a bike that you simply can't hold up if it tips over too far (think 250kg instead of 150), so you want to get all the practice out of the way now, when you're on something relatively small.

Sounds scary, I know, but it's all just part of the deal. In due course it'll all just become automatic for you.

Get 20,000km on that CBR under your belt, and I guarantee you'll wonder what you were making all the fuss about.

:niceone:

Also, when you say 'heavy', I'm wondering if you're thinking of the way the bike handles at speed rather than its weight when you're wheeling or paddling it around in neutral. Part of the 'heaviness' you perceive could be due to the low clip-on bars and the way the bike turns. Are you consciously practicing your countersteering?

Im 60 kgs and 5'2 and upgraded from a GN 250 to a CB400 which I thought was going to topple over and kill me, then my husband made me sit on his Hayabusa and try and stand that beast up. The riding position of the CBR250 is supposed to be a classic racing position so maybe its a balance thing and it doesn't feel natural to be controlling a machine lying down. When you stand up straight with your feet flat does it feel lighter?? I hopped on a 250 bandit thinking it was a 400 bandit and was thinking wow this is light. If this is your first bike, give yourself time to get used to it. Im gonna have fun riding the VFR400 because its the first sports bike Im going to ride. I think I may keep the old fairings on her for the first few months and keep the new painted ones in the garage.

10-15 years of hard out competition in the 600cc class to get more power and less weight I guess. The litres aren't much more now either. One wonders how much more weight they can save!

Either way with the CBR250RR the OP will get used to the weight pretty quickly and it'll make the step up to a bigger bike much easier than from a FXR.

I heard that hey stopped 'trying to save weight' because research showed that if a bike is too light, it negatively affects performance.

From what I gather the cbr250 is 153kg not 158, therefore is lighter than the 600 version. I don't find it very heavy as you get used to it pretty quickly, as long as you keep it upright :), then you don't have to pick it up!

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'll stick with it then and be zipping around in no time. :) Yeh, I know it's a little bike, but it's heavy for me!! I only weigh about 50kg, give or take a couple. Once it's moving it's all good, it's when I'm pushing it around or going really slowly (or trying to pick it up ) that it seems heavy. My dad's very very apprehensive about the weight thing too, which is rubbing off on me a little. But s'all good. Practice, practice, practice seems to be the message here. Er... but if anyone if welly sees a me standing next to a MONSTER of a cbr on it's side... wanna stop and help pick it up again? hehe :sweatdrop

I used to hate moving my bike around, until I learned that its miles easier to get off the bike, put the stand up (*shock horror*) and lean the bike against yourself as you move it around. MILES easier...and you're far more unlikely to drop it.

Now if I could just get that into M's head so I don't have to ride over there to move hers around :)

you must be rather tiny to find it heavy..when i had mine, our shed had to hold my flatmates mitsi emeraude and my bike, barely..literally used to lift the bike up and move it, and i'm NOT a fit guy..haha.:-) promise you'll get used to it, if you worry like this everytime you'll never move up in the power stakes. for example, a cbr250rr is about 150kg fully wet, my TL1000S is a bit over 200kgs..

No no. I guess you'd have had to be around for a while to appreciate the "Hondas are gay" campaign that skidMark is running more or less on his own. He wasn't being offended - just smug that SEAMINFuk had just said he'd rather have the CBR than the kawasaki (spelling is beside the point) - which in Marks reality equals admitting that he'd rather have a guy shove a big cock up his ass than kiss a woman... ;)

Already seen enough of the "Hondas are gay" campaign to bore me actually... To me, every bike has it's place and purpose... Whether it be a Harley or a Yamaha or a Ducati. It's like, why do people care so much? If it makes someone else happy who gives a damn? Their choice. You don't like it, buy a different bike.

Okay, rant over.
