Just wondering how many of you ladies have taking your hubby/s.o. or kids out on the back of your bikes? What was it like the first time you carried a passenger and how did you learn?

Has anyone gotten any weird looks for having a male passenger?

I've pillioned my husband 3 or 4 times now. Only once was on my bike. I don't ride with a pillion, so it's something I've got to learn. I hate it and he's a crap pillion.
We want to go touring at some stage in the future and I don't want to be a few months without a bike but taking one bike is the plan to keep costs down.
Each time we go out two up with me riding, I feel like it's the first time, but I haven't pillioned enough to be blase about it.
I'm thinking of doing a course at some stage, but also know it's going to be time in the rider's seat.
Wierd looks, yeah. I'm fairly short, he's tall.
Hope to read some other reports on how to get over the fear factor.

if I'm broke down, coz we each have our own bikes, and she doesnt reeeeeely enjoy someone on the back and she doesnt reeeely like being a pillion herself (why would she - she has a hot-ass bike herself.)

HOWEVER, I would ride in or on ANY vehicle under her command without hesitation, as her driving is exquisite. M is a professional driver and has been for nearly 20 years and her mindset is an excellent, if not conservative one. :first:

Gee I should get some points for this post ay

If my bike has let me down, sure, no problem. Otherwise I'm gonna be riding my own ride, with my woman riding pillion - she doesn't ride big road bikes herself.

I've pillioned on my friend's Bros 650 when my bike was in the shop. It was strange being a passenger, but no big deal.

What's the 'Bitch' reference?

My first pillion experience was behind Keystone19... for 600km... on a GSXR600.

That was months ago and i'm still in mourning for my arse.

I have my 12 year old son as pillion  First took him on the road a couple of weeks after his 5th birthday! Before that, we used to do a bit of trail riding down by the river.. so he was already well used to being on a bike by the time he turned 5! :ride:

I also used to pillion a friend who had gone blind, but still had his bike.. so friends could take him out riding! here's a couple of links from another thread of taking male pillions..

The best way to learn.. is just to DO IT!! The more you do it, the better you will get! :niceone:

Riding "bitch" is the term given to the person on the pillion seat.. typically being "the missus".. hence "the bitch on the back". :girlfight:

& WHY shouldn't guys get on the back behind a woman rider anyway?????? :spudwhat: Is it some kind of "lesser" position being on the back with a female rider???? or is it just male arrogance & pride!!!? <_<

After my last experience of being on the back behind a male rider.. doing 160ks in a 50k zone.. :bash: I won't get on the back again! :oi-grr:

I basically learnt to ride on the road on a 750 Katana with BF on the back, plus luggage. As a skinny 16-17 year old with BF pillion we got some really strange looks.
I once took a staunch Harley rider home from a Poker Run after he broke his rubber band.
I get a wee bit nervous taking my kids on my bike. They are all great pillions but it's every other bugger on the road I'm worried about. At the end of a short ride with one of my kids, I feel like I've done 500+kms.
I've never been pillion with another woman riding.

Typical, really, of the rampant misogynism prevalent in much of the biker community, particularly online.

Misogynism condoned by women too, even more surprisingly.

My first pillion (and only one so far) was Ripper Roo92. He's just turned 16 and doesn't mind being seen on bike behind mum (although it's such a gorgeous bike, who could really complain?) lol.
Haven't taken my husband as he is a lot heavier than me and I am not sure about how the balance of the bike might be affected by that.
As for how did it feel the first time? Was very cautious initially when moving off but once underway it was surprisingly easy. Just kept in mind allowing for stopping distance etc - no problems whatseoever. In fact it was a strange feeling being able to get both feet flat on the road ha ha! I'm only too happy to take someone on the back as long as they are aware of how to move with me etc. and understand the importance of not doing stupid distracting things. Apart from my son though, I don't really have anyone else to take out with me. Boo hoo.

We (Cajun, my sister and me) learnt to take pillions at the same time we learnt to ride our first road bike (a ZZR250). I think I'd had my license one week before I took my first pillion (we'd been riding farm bikes for years).

At this point, Dad has his 1500 Vulcan so one of us went on the back of that and the other two went on the ZZR. We'd chop and change so each person had a turn riding, as pillion on the Vulcan, and as pillion on the ZZR. This often meant that Cajun (at 6'2") was on the back of the bike with either my sister or me riding it. It must've looked ridiculous!

Once we all got our own bikes (back in '98ish) we stopped taking pillions. We have a rule in our house: when we need to take a pillion the bike's owner gets to ride it and the other one gets on the back. I think I've taken Cajun for two rides in the last two years.

On a serious note, I hate getting pillion'd with anyone. I feel unsafe etc.

Would only do it if I absolutely had to.

I have done in the past. Same rule for being pillion on any bike, I have to trust their riding.

The whole pillion thing is interesting. You are effectively putting your life in anther persons hands. But this is the same when you a passenger in a car but the chances of getting hurt are alot less if the driver screws up.

I'd have no problem being pillioned by a female infact I'd probably feel safer than being pillioned my a male as males tend to have egos that make them do silly things to impress.

Quite honestly I don't like to carry pillions as its extra responsibility and I dislike being pillioned as I'm not in control.

I enjoy taking pillions and have had my then 8 year old son on the back a couple of times.

My husband refuses to get on the back but he doesn't ride either. May be because the only time he's seen me ride is on the race track...

I find with the larger pillion passengers balance can be a challenge when stopping or starting. I give strict instructions to my pillion not to move when we are stopped! Smaller pillions its not such an issue.

I find the gsxr easier to take a pillion on than my sv was - possibly due to the weight balance on the bike.

I was in Little River a few years ago and a chick on one of those naked Katana's rode up with her bloke on the back. She was a stunner :gob:and had no problem walking up to us ugly bastards and start chatting about the road etc. The bloke didn't come over though, almost as if he'd been told off or something! (I think she wore the trousers) She wore tight blue jeans with leather chaps, which helped her cause, and a black leather jacket and scarf. Did I mention she was a stunner?? When she rode off we were speechless!:eek5:

Learn to have a pillion with one of my girlfriend that was already used to pillion her Dad, not scared of anything and pretty light...So thanks to her, she trusted me and so i'm all fine with pillion now ;)

Took one of my mate (1m85 and 90 kg) on my DR 125! Haha was an adventure!
As Keystone said, starting was so hard lol! But just had non-riding boys going on rides with me yet: no shame being on a girl's back as they don't ride, or rider boy too afraid by my riding maybe? :p

I find other bikers generally make terrible pillions. I am the same.

I used to ride on the back of my Ex's bike and I'd always be second guessing her, trying to see through the corner early, getting ready to lean when she was still choosing her angle etc...

I was pretty much begging for a binning. I don't ride bitch unless I can avoid it.

My first time experience was getting in behind Keystone19...

I didn't know that was public news?

Re riding behind a female... no worries. My concerns would be that I'm a rider (and would have to adapt my style to suit them in control of the machine...) and that whoever is in control is a capable rider and I trust them.

I don't treat women any different to men when it comes to pillioning behind them. I hate it either way. I'll only go pillion if it's absolutely necessary and even then I'll think twice.

My wife won't take me pillion anymore as I'm too much trouble on the back (always moving the wrong way and just generally asking for trouble). When it comes time for us both to get on her bike she just hands me the keys (although this hasn't been necessary for ages).

As to the ins and outs of having a larger pillion on the back. I've had a pillion of around 120+kg and found the bike a tad unstable to say the lease when stationary. While moving I didn't really have any problems apart from the COG being a bit higher. Had a pillion of more like 60kg and actually forgot they were there at one point. The most fun (to use the term loosely) I've had while riding with pillion was when I over filled my oil tank on my XJ600. One of the most stupid designs I've seen put the overflow hose right in front of the rear wheel! Needless to say I didn't have much grip in the rear that day.

Misogynism condoned by women too, even more surprisingly.

Interestingly, according to an exceedingly authoritative piece of literature (Cosmopolitan, February 2008) a hallmark of the Girl Power movement in the 90s was the reclaiming of words such as "bitch". Previously considered derogatory, women took them back and wore the label with pride.

Hence we now see number plate surrounds "Sexy bitches drive red cars", key rings with B = Bold, I = Intelligent, T = Terrific, C = cute, H - Hot, or similar.

Personally, if someone calls me a bitch it automatically gets my hackles up ....... In jest, in the throes of passion, in whatever circumstance, it's likely to happen only once :girlfight::girlfight::girlfight:

Ah, yes! and we'd only get two minute's up the road by the time I would be getting the move out of the way jostle, mid corner :eek5: Seriously I like sitting on the back of my own bike (which is the suitable one in the garage for two up riding). There is an art to being a good pillion, its all riding in my world
I would never ask Chris to sit on the back, doesnt make sense anyway, why put the heaviest person on the back when you can both ride? I take my son out for short 40k trips once a month now, bikes suitable for it and its a short enough journey to continue to hold his interest

If hubby is going to be anything like he is in a car (as a potential pillion), then no thanks!
Talk about a left side driver...

Now that I ride my own, I'd rather stay on it...not so hot for pillioning anymore as his bike is just way uncomfortable anyway.

If we had an accident and his bike was out of action, then I'd let him ride my bike with me as a pillion, but only because that would be the sensible option, him being the more experienced rider and all...

no problem riding pillion with a woman rider
If she has her licence and is riding a decent size bike,
then whats the problem?
Im only a little fellow, so it would be like having a full camp kit on the back if I was pillion.
Have done plenty of pillion riding in the past, can be very enjoyable, the views alone are worth it. as anyone who pillions regually will agree.

Dear Hitcher,

Your literacy is giving the rest of us a bad reputation. And your grammar - perfect! You need to sink the same level as the rest of us.

No skill is more crucial to the future of a child, or to a democratic and prosperous society, than literacy. (LA Times, "A Child Literacy Initiative for the Greater Los Angeles Area").

Yours sincerely,

If I trusted the rider it wouldn't matter at all what sex they had.

And I don't see any reason to trust a female rider less than a male. She's less likely to have a brainfart and decide to demonstrate her testicular fortitude. On the other hand she might feel the need to give the yoke of sexual prejudice a small shove - but I'm sure that I would bear part of the fault if that was indeed the case.
