:argh::argh:

I've ridden for almost a year in all seasons at all times with my Ixon jacket. With my wallet and house keys in the left pocket, and my phone in the right. Never had a problem.

So I set out on a little ride today, along the northern motorway. It was raining a fair bit. After about 40 Ks of riding, I stopped at BP dairy flat. Reached in my left pocket to get my wallet, it was a bit damp, I didn't think much of it. Then I reached in my right pocket to get my phone out, and saw this:

<img src="http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/4796/dsc00468qu3.jpg"/>

These photos are from after a couple hours of dehumidifier-aided trying. There was a fuckload of water under the screen. It was like a god damn fish tank.

I immediately removed the battery and shook the phone frantically trying to get the water out. Got most of it out. I'm gonna dry it for a couple days with my dehumidifier and see if it boots up. Not holding my breath, that's for sure.

I pulled the pocket out, so it was inside out, and about half a cup of water came out of it. It appears that water somehow gets in, but can't get out. Basically it filled up and drowned my phone.

People with Ixon Diablo Road / Race jackets be careful! Put your important shit in the inside pocket or better yet, in a water proof bag and under the seat or in a backpack.

Mate

It wasn't the jacket that farked your phone

It was your not protecting a non-waterproof unit

You should expect that water will penetrate zips, pockets, flaps etc - especially when driven by wind...

Under the seat or in a backpack is no better - plastic bag and in an inside pocket and you might stand a chance

Even Goretex jackets don't have waterproof pockets, as the pockets are generally outside the Goretex liner.

Yeah. But I can't help but wonder if the phone would have been better off if the water had place to drain out of.

Yeah. But I can't help but wonder if the phone would have been better off if the water had place to drain out of.

then you whould have a hole instead of a pocket.

You only came up with that now??....
Nothing at all gets carried in my jacket, it can get a bit expensive if things get wet...:(

Lol but your ixon jacket is screwed from when you decied to see if upside down bikes go faster :p. My one is waterproof, but yeah, always have stuff in backpack or waterproog tank bag.

It's bound to happen sooner or later.

I vouch for that comment on gore-tex/waterproof jackets which has pockets on the outside, they aren't waterproof unless they're inner pockets.

Best bet is get yourself a zip lock plastic bag or one of those dry sack thingiees to keep your electronic goods which is completely waterproof!

I have a DRIRIDER jacket, had my phone in my side pocket. No problems. And its NOT a new jacket. Get a can of spray on water repellant and use it.

My dririder jacket came with a plastic phone bag to use, with a warning to use it if your phone is going to live in the phone pocket provided cos the jacket pocket cannot be guaranteed waterproof.

Most of the time though, the phone lives in the pillionbag, and I must admit I've been lucky so far as I've not put anything in plastic bags yet and haven't had a water problem. Only a matter of time methinks, time to get organised for winter . . .

Most riding gear is only water RESISTANT. NOT water PROOF. So treat all gear as such, and take the necessary precautions for stuff you dont want wet.

Bugger about your phone, unfortunately if it was on when it got wet it has most likely shorted out, unless by some miracle it was still going when you found it!

I'm addicted to Glad ziplock bags. I don't trust my jacket pockets, my tank bag leaks in the rain coz it's a cheap one, and last time I rode for quite a while in the rain with my biggish ventura pack on, the outside back pocket had a puddle in the bottom.

Everything in my tank bag, pockets and outer pack pockets go into ziplock bags if rain is likely. As for my ventura bag I line it with a big black rubbish bag inside if I'm away for more than a day trip.

Better safe than sorry!

Yes! I dried it in front of the de-humidifier, and then opened it up and gave it a quick air blow / wipe, and it works!

Unfortunately when I opened it, some dust got between the transparent plastic for the screen and the LCD, so there is the tiniest amount of dust. Other than that I'm happy cos I don't have to shell out for a new phone!

:puke: If I ever drop my phone in the shitter I'm only ever gonna handle it with latex gloves, and if it starts to work, flog it off on TradeMe :p

The Ventura bags are sort of waterproof, but the seams suck water in. You can get storm covers for them, but they are lightweight nylon, and tend to blow around. desperately trying to turn into a wind sock. Your solution is the best one, even for shortish trips (less than an hour) in moderate rain.

Apart from water getting in you phone, when carried in Jacket pockets they can also break ribs  Happened to a friend of mine a few years ago, although admittedly the technology was a bit older then and phones were a bit smaller, and you couldn't txt between vodafone and telecom. His phone was one of those first cool nokia's with games on them! Snake was awesome...

Don't be a wuss, Just wash it with a good disinfectant an then dry it again:niceone:

A year or so ago I dropped my Blackberry in a creek we were pumping out, it was contaminated from a sewer overflow and I didn't have time to piss around with a slow dry.
So I pulled it apart and chucked it onto the ute motor in bits to dry, then left motor running for an hour or so to keep it hot.

Of course after driving off I had to stop at the first intersection and retrieved the phone and cover which by chance were caught in the exhaust and inlet manifolds ........ but not the battery that was long gone

Went back to office and pinched a battery from another phone to get it going :2thumbsup

So far I have rescued 2 phones and a car remote by drying rapidly either on the dash or on the motor. Depending on what they drown in a slow dry can cause corrosion in the contacts.
