View Full Version : My new Harley Davidson Ultra Classic

This thread is intended to be a report on my views and thoughts on my new Harley.

A bit of back ground first though. My first bikewas a Honda XL100, orange tank, followed by a CB360, XL250 motorsport, CB350, CB650. Got married and sold the bike to get a car for the kid on the way.

My interests over the next 24 years involved Ham Radio, Whale Rescue, Motorsport, Diving and shooting.

Five and a half years ago, the kids had grown up and started paying board, I felt the need for a motor bike. Well thats another story, trying to park a car outside any of the bike shops in Auckland. Ended up at AMPS to take a Honda Hornet for a spin, only to find it had been dropped and not available. So I took a look around and spotted a Sportster 883, and took it for a spin and ended up buying it. In the 4 1/2 years and 40,000 miles later I had become committed to the Harley Brand and HOG.

I have now ridden most Harleys from 883 sportsters to 103ci Ultras.

On the 9th Feb I took delivery of a 2008 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic 105th Anniversary motorbike. 96ci or 1583cc, 6 speed gearbox and ABS bembo brakes.

Yesterday I dropped the Ultra off at AMPS for the first service with 1800km on the clock. Having ridden other Ultras from 2003 models to 2007 models and my first impressions of the the 2008 Ultra is that the bike is far better that any previous years. The ride is better and the motor feels to have more torque, maybe due to the new computer to take the fly by wire throttle. The brakes are far better than the earlier ones.

I intend to post up dates here as I use and put more miles on it. Happy reading.

How much did it set you back?
It looks as if it would cost a medal ransom!

$36.500 not bad when two years ago a standard ultra classic was $41,000

.

per quotes I have read the twin cam 96" motor puts out about 66 ft lbs of torque as it leaves the factory, no doubt it puts out quite a bit more after the stage 1 is done and all the emmission control crap is removed

by comparison my 52 panhead puts out 63 ft lbs torque on the dyno

you have to ask what has harley actually been doing for the last 55 years to gain the additional 3 ft lbs torque

As long as you're happy with it Divot is all that really matters. Look fwd to the long term ownership reports.

Certainly a good time to buy at the moment alright. Been having a gander at the local dealerships lately and the selection is great.

Good ride. I 'test' rode a Road King a few years ago and they were over $40K then - good to see they are dropping in price.

Now no offense to you or your fine ride but WTF withs a 105th Anniversary motorbike Harley? - 105 is not a significant number - sounds like an excuse to charge a bit more for a fancy badge.

After the global 100th anniversary parties (and rightly so) I'd not expect any thing 'anniversary' until 125.

But ignore my rave and enjoy that fine ride - how do you find the new 6 speed tranny (that's US talk for gearbox folks)?

105th aniversary of what???

records show they didn't probably actually sell any bikes untill 1904 or 1905

they produced a 50th aniversary bike in 1954

something does not add up

The company considers 1903 to be its year of founding, William S. Harley, Arthur Davidson and with the help of Arthur's brother, Walter Davidson they completed their 1st bike in 1903 which was 7.07 cubic inches (116 cc)............Therefore 2003 was its 100th anniversary

alright then, the reason i THINK they do it, is to bring more attention to the brand by making a big deal by celebrating a anniversary they will try and boost their sales and try and bring more people to the great harley davidson life:shifty:

The only issue with whacking out a 'special' anniversary model every 5 years is that they become too common and will not hold any extra value long term. It would piss me off if I had shelled out for a 100th anniversary bike only to have another 'anniversary' 5 years later. Just call it a limited edition deluxe model or something, maybe a Willie G signature series.

The first documented evidence of them actually selling anything is january 1905 when they advertised bare motors

The first documented evidence of them building a bike that ran was an entry in a 1904 race

They were definitely playing around in a shed with the 116cc motor you mention but there is no evidence that it was actually fitted to a bike and all the evidence points to its not having sufficient power anyway (some may well say that nothing much has changed since)

However the factory did release a 50th aniversary model in 1954

Either way the 1903 start date is an urban myth that they are happy to keep purpetuating as it moves the aniversary sales forward a year.

Harley- Davidson celebrated their 50th anniversary in the fall of 1953, so it's 1954 models were designated as anniversary models.

should have booked a ferry and carried on down south

years ago a mate of mine bought an shovel engined early tourglide, left auckland one day and was in dunedin the next, said it was the best bike he had ever owned and regretted selling it

he replaced it with an evo heritage which was not a patch on the tourglide in any way shape or form

still have an 86 electraglide, have owned it for 12 years and ridden it around NZ the states and europe, for long distance work they take a lot of beating

Well it is just nearly 10 months of ownership of the Ultra ( picked up 9th Feb 08) and over 17,000km. Had the 16,000km service done the other week and had the rear brake pads replaced. Had to replace the rear tyre as it was down to 2mm tread left. The only other problens with the bike was the master cylinder cover was showing signs of brake fluid marking.

That was untill the other day on our Labour Weekend trip with Auckland Hog. Heading south of National Park we stopped at the Last Spike, about 5km south of there the motor cut out and th head lights and spots went out. WTF pulled the clutch in an flicked the ingition switch and every thing came back let the clutch out and we were on the way again. Took the ultra into the dealer on Tuesday and spoke to the boss and workshop guys who scratched their heads. Said they would email the factory and see if anyone could throw light on the problem. Sure enough had a phone call today and have the bike booked in next Tuesday to get it sorted.

Still love the ultra and out there riding

Loving my 2001 UC so far, although I can't say I was overjoyed about the broken drive belt I had 2 weeks ago. :)According to a wee chappy at work you can get a belt that joins together with allen screws as a "get me home" solution. Could be worth looking in to Horse. Interesting enough there's a repair solution available for worn drive pulleys too. http://www.supermax.net/

Belt drive on my glide shredded itself 12 years ago

I replaced it with a chain and sprockets and fitted a scotoiler

Maintenance is limited to refilling the scotoiler and checking teh chain tension every oil change

Replacement chains are a 15 min job vs about 5 hours for a belt

Had a trial run on the new Rocker. Six gear box, 240 wide back tyre, 36.5 grade rake, single seat, forward controls and pullbacks with wiring hidden.

Not bad handling, but found that the steel pins fitted in the forward footpegs would quickly scrape the road when leaning over. Brakes were enough for me, no complaints there.

Used to home made long fork customs mainly rigid ones, and so I was used to the cornering technique: Have your weetbix in the morning and you will have enough umph to push her down in the corner. And even if she did handle the corners better then my 20"+ extended fork choppers, I was still a little dissappointed that for $30K+ I would not get anything better.

Motor and box was nice. No vibrations and sixth gear is something I was not used to. You listen to the revs, you check the speedo and see that you sit over the limit and all seems fine. Then you wonder: was there one more gear? And there is! And suddenly you are running her on idle at 150K/h.

Would have liked wide glide forks (just for looks) and the footpegs could easily be taken in 2" on each side! Add to that spoked wheels and the front a 21" and I might be convinced...

Nice. My verdict: 4 outta 5. But over $33K for the custom... Wonder if my kids would eat porrige for 3 years as I love them soo much...

Sorry Guys, no trip repot had too much fun. Already planed the trip to the HOG rally in Christchurch 2010.

The Ultra is now 19 months old and it has 39,9137 km on it. No real probles, had the front wheel bearing replace at 24,000km. Would recomend a ultra to anyone that plans to do lagre mileage.

Well guys and girls, the second worst thing has happened. No, I have not dumped the ultra but sold her. 23 months and 48,000km of pure enjoyment of riding the roads and seeing New Zealand. Never have I had so much fun.

Hey but all is not lost!!!

We now own a brand new 2010 Ultra Classic!!!!!

Got the Classic over the Limited because we can do our own mods. Had the Flame running boards, Brake pedal and shifters along with the GPS swaped over. Got a limited top box rack and high stop light coming with flame heated hand grips. Got her booked in for the first service on the 15th, two days before heading off to Christchurch.

Looks like a great ride. Flame heated hand grips sounds like a great idea too, other bikes have them or just Harley?

Great pictures.

I really like the third one with the classic old car, also because the background reminds me of home, same type of scenery to be found in southern Idaho.

Glad you like the Big Bitch...I have an 08 Ultra and like you love her for the Tour ability etc, keep my 95 Dyna for play days. Did 10000 miles in 07 and included Sturgis for 4 nights, am off to the Nationals on Tuesday if I can get my battery sorted. On the Ferry on Wed morning then booked at Gretmouth for the night, then down to Timaru for a couple of days then to CHCH, might see you there

Well we are well and truely back from the South Island. Just a short trip this year, 9 days. We did a couple of roads in the South Island that we had not travelled over. The Kaikoura Inland road and the road from Springs Junction to Blenheim. Must say that the changed that Harley have made to the Ultra have really made a diffrence. The bike is alot stiffer through the corners and handles real good. Even the wife comments on how much the ride is.
