I've read the fact sheets but they are a bit long winded.
basically if i buy a bike now and bring it over to nz in a few months and plan to register and use it then keep it for at least a couple of years in nz
do i have to pay any import duty because i've only owned it for a short time or pay gst when i sell it

I think you pay gst 2 time, once when you bring it in you pay aussie , and then you pay gst here

If im wrong im wrong
but my mate was going to bring 2 vehicles over a few years ago and he didnt bother cause 2 time gst

From my recent experience, if you have owned the vehicle for more than 24monthes i believe then no GST is payable. However if you have owned it for less than that period and are bringing it in for your own personnel use and you have a work permit etc. You will be asked to sign an undertaking that should you sell it within two years of the vehicle arriving in NZ you will pay GST on the agreed value of the vehicle. The amount of GST payable ramps down over the two year period to take account of depriciation so sell immediately you arrive 100% of GST would be due, sell 6 monthes after arrival 75% so on so forth. However the one fly in the ointment would be if the vehicle was brand new, then as you had exported directly from the UK they would have expected you claim your VAT/Vehicle Purchase Tax back from UK govt, and would therefore be liable for GST on the RRP in NZ. I also believe it is the same if you have bought a second hand vehicle and only owned it a short period (less than six monthes) then you are charged GST.

So if you are looking at brand spanking new then probably as well to buy here for warranty pruposes, etc, also removes the risk of damage in transit etc and the hassle of having the NZ equivalent of single vehicle type approval (vin'ing) and associated costs. In the long run probably cost the same or near enough as makes no difference.

thanks gsp thats the answer i was looking for.
its not a new bike and i'll only have had it for a few months before its shipped over, even taking gst into account i still think i'm better off importing than waiting and buying in nz when i get there.

Ok, glad to help, get the bike vin'd over is stricter than a UK MOT so even though mine had past it's MOT a couple of monthes before export, still failed vinning on thickness of DISCS, worth bearing in mind, also any after market parts like brake lines and exhausts if they dont have required DOT markings etc may cause it to fail so would probably pay to get an unmolested stock bike. Also make sure it's covered by insurance when shipped, mine even though it looked like it had been well crated was damaged on arrival (paint scraped /rubbed off), and the local bike shop that sorted it for me had a number of other personnel imports including a blackbird that had been damaged and were probably going to be written off.

damage in transit...who did you use for shipping?

GBLiners, but is not an uncommon occurance and to be honest the bike looked well crated, but unfortunately looked like they had placed a bracing bar across the top of the front mudguard/fender which had 13000 miles to rub /scratch the paint of as well as other areas of paint damaged. But compared to the damage to the Blackbird i saw in the local shop here in wellington/lower hutt which included smashed fairing and clocks was superficial (that guy also had damage to other bike and a car he had shipped)

Mine was crated and in a 40ft container with all our household belongings.
