Hi Guys,

I'm posting this on behalf of a Mate who i currently staying with me as his 1997 Guzzi 1100 sport is now sitting in a bike shop in Wanganui awaiting freighting back to Nelson. He was up here attending a rally and the Paeroa races when on the way back just before Wanganui his Guzzi just died e'g shutdown and he coasted to a stop.
Initial roadside investigation showed that the battery box under the seat had come loose...and the constant movement and vibration had caused one of the battery terminals to break off(!!!didn't think that could happen?) anyway after his cellphone SOS was answered and the bike was transported to Wanganui a new battery was installed however now the bike keeps blowing the fuse to the ECU when the ignition is turned on?.The bike does have a power commander fitted as its one of the injected versions.
He is now quietly shitting himself as a new ECU is probably going to cost?and he has already racked up a few expenses so has any of the KB Guzzi Owners have any ideas or suggestions?? (no he won't sell it...)
He loves this bike and has just rebuilt it after a crash.

Cheers O1

have any ideas or suggestions??

As well as farking the battery terminal, the vibration and chaffing has worn through the insulation on a wire and it is shorting to ground, probably through the frame. Maybe?

Just my $0.02

Well - I've never owned an 1100 Sport (but I'd like too) BUT I've heard of prenty of cases where the battery going out like this wll cause the Weber Marelli 16M 'puter to shit itself terminally.... And yes - they cost a fortune to replace.

I've also heard nothing but good things about this guy....

If money is an issue and your mate is a dab hand with a soldering iron - he can save a fair bit of coin in assembling the kit himself - or just buy a full assembled one. The end result will be a better running bike.

If he replaces the original 16M there is a mod to give it some diode protection, I think on Guzzitech. You could try Pete and Moto Kiwi for a used spare?? http://www.motokiwi.co.nz/ Hes a genuine good bastard as well...

Cheers

(if he wants to get rid of the pile of junk I'll give him bottom - um - mid dollar?? ;-)

I would think the main fuse is there to protect the ECU....but who knows what the Italians do.Don't panic yet - you don't even have the bike to look at! When you finally get the bike, then you can find out what has happened.Disconnect everything....hook up the battery and start plugging things in until the main fuse blows. If it blows that fast a visual or nostril test could pick up the short.ECU's don't use 12V,a transformer steps the voltage down for internal use.

HI,

You never want a battery lead to come off a car or bike!!!
If the bike uses a variable field current system like the old Guzzi's and I think it will do, then that sort of thing can easily damage the (bosch?) alternator and ECU.
What happens is when your battery lead comes away from battery the alt can be still connected to the ECU,
the alternator now with an open circuit condition tries to raise it's output voltage until often it dies and so does anything
voltage sensitive connected to it - like ECU's.

Happens on cars quite a lot - or bikes like ours with proper alternators.

I have the gear to talk to those ECU's but it's no use
the way it's acting up.

Good luck and let us know.

Cheers
