Beautiful country, thanks for that.
Those dialup people deserve to suffer anyway, povety-stricken maggots.

I remember going through there when I was about 14, on a pushbike. There were 4 of us kids and dad drove the car with all our stuff in it, met us every few hours. We felt like real adventurers.

Do you still need a key to get through the gates?

I have a couple. And since I'm cheap n nasty by nature, I can live with having "a small one".:crybaby:

Sydney the ghost requested that I didn't post any pic's of him, as the paparazzi would descend on Top House, and make his after life hell.

A reminder about the site rules regarding embedded images:

Embedded Images Size
Many site members still use dialup connection and large images can take too long to load. It is strongly recommended that images be attachments rather than embedded. A URL can be used to attach an image to a post in the same way as attaching a file.
Maximum Picture Size: 640 pixels x 480 pixels
Maximum Picture File Size: 100kb

Could the mod not have resized the photos since poor ole marks had to upload them on a dialup for everyones advantage.....

Sorry, but that is one function we can't do.

Well I use the thumbnail attachments all the time, except once for the Dusty Butt story I wrote, and I got grilled for that from Jantar :dodge:
And mine were only 100kb per picture

It sounds like Jantar just doesnt like them because he is on dial up.

And for those of you that arent aware, having dial up does not mean you are being tight arsed, some places still cant get Broadband :gob:

Partially correct. I am on dial up, and would just love to be able to get broadband. It just isn't available in my location unless I go via satelite.

f*cking rules and regulations

it all worked perfectly last night when I posted them.

Its pathetic - I warned dial up users not to bother but it all has to be dumbed down for the lowest common denominator

I'll post them at advrider and post a link here tonight.

I won't bother with photos here again given the nazis inhabiting the woodwork

Marks, the fact that you even titled this thread the way you did shows that you were well aware of the rules, and I should have simply removed the whole thread straight to PD and infracted you for a blatant disregard of the rules. However I simply deleted the photos so you could repost them in a more suitable format.

If you don't wish to abide by the rules of this site then feel free to set up your own one.

I wasn't aware of any rules - every photo I've ever posted here has been embedded and 800x600. I added the dialup comment because I know embedded photo piss off some dial up users.

I happen to prefer embedded photos so I will post any future photos on advrider and avoid this anal bullshit

AdvRider may be more slack with the image rules, but it can be a pain if your just checking back on a thread waiting for all the images to load again.
Then again its better than their stupid one uploaded image per post. :nono:

Very nice pics, the area looks great to ride. Is it public land? What's the lake called?

Apologies, it wasn't clear from the link to the map on the urm, other, site...

Hey who rides the Scrambler and what's it like to ride?

A reminder about the site rules regarding embedded images:Sorry but the rules suck big-time.

It should not be the responsibility of those "that have" to cripple their usage to make it easier for those "that don't". A big reason broadband is a problem is due to the predatory practices of Telecom both in pricing and holding back the technology: at times deliberately crippling it in order to gouge profits from reluctant customers by forcing them to pay for components that cost nothing, or bundling with features they don't want in order to justify a high price. KB should NOT be using the same tactics. Technology wants to be free!

If *YOUR* system cannot handle large images, *YOU* configure *YOUR* system to handle the interweb thingy the way *YOU* want, without trying to force everyone else in the universe to work to your preference. KB is not the be-all and end-all of the interweb. I don't see the point in crippling just this one site and pissing off a large percentage of its (potential and/or former) users. Next thing you'll be wanting to round off pi because you don't like all those extra digits.

The KB attachment image system is disgraceful. Not only is it extremely cumbersome, awkward, difficult to use, difficult to read, time-consuming, resource-wasteful, slow, loads up the KB server with data and bandwidth consumption... do you really want me to go on? It's a complete pain in the arse and self-defeating.

If you don't wish to abide by the rules of this site then feel free to set up your own one.Or just go somewhere else (http://advrider.com/), which seems to be an increasingly popular choice.

AdvRider may be more slack with the image rules, but it can be a pain if your just checking back on a thread waiting for all the images to load again.Which is not a bandwidth issue at all, they'll be coming from your browser cache. Mark_S' thread re-displays in an instant for me, everything is sitting in the cache & RAM. If they are slow to render, your PC is under-resourced, including the cache being too small so the images *are* being re-downloaded.

It goes well, is comfy, and makes me smile. Treat them like a pack mule, ride it like a modern day Royal Enfield. And smile back at the admiring ladies.

Don't ride with anyone on a Scrambler - its a freaking magnet for every ex or wannabee rider along with anyone with a full face under their arm. They wave at it out of pub toilet windows, they rush up to it on beaches, they mob it at camp grounds and as they rush up slobbering they glance at the DT with a 'whats that piece of shit doing next to the Triumph' look on their faces.

Mind you it is hard to not react to the sound that thing makes .... damn it sounds sweet. :Punk:

You got to watch those deviants - especially the Scrambler mounted ones from the Waikato!

Unfortunately I have only done around 30kms on the KTM so far this year. I am off overseas for the whole of April but current plans are to get down to Rainbow and Molesworth at year end.

when you get near the north end (close to the ski field road) if you have time explore all the side tracks down near the river - we wasted and hour or two doing that. Also turn left onto hiway 63 and then a km or so later turn right onto tophouse rd - its 5-10 km of gravel and quite scenic. Stop at the Tophouse homestead and have a beer at the oldest bar in the country (or something like that)

On the Tophouse Rd you can turn off at Kikiwa and either follow the river or turn right at Golden Downs and shoot off up there. You come out near Wakefield. Somewhere on that road is my Cortina muffler that I 'lost' being too young and stupid.

Great photos alright! Wish i was there!

Does not matter how much i hit my camera onto my keyboard i cant embed photos in any of my posts........

How photos are attached to posts does not worry me at all!
As long as i get to see them! Nothing worse than just getting a pesky white box with a red X in it!

At the Northern end of the rd, a station worker was there to relieve us of ten dollars and record rego etc.
A very fair price to pay, plus he gave us directions to a few tracks off the road that were worth a look. A key isn't required as far as I know.
The road is probably open between 7am-6pm.
Might pay to make a few ph calls though, just to be certain.

Regarding the Rainbow and a Key if you care to have a look my my new web site www.advroutes.org.nz and then zoom in to the top of the south island, click on the long blue route heading north from Hanmer (which just happens to be the Rainbow) you will note in the description box that "Access is limited to between 1st December to the first weekend in March." This is completely shameless promotion of my website which is completely free to use by the way :D

I've not put it on the site yet (cause I want to check about people being happy with me publishing the phone number) but if you ring Start holdings outside of the Dec-Mar period you can arrange to get a key and get access. Price is the same.

Cheers R

For Adv riding I like the Continental TKC80 up front to give it stability in the gravel.
The rear has been Conti TKC, Metz Sahara 3, Mitas E-07(yuk), and Bridgstone Trail Wing 42.
I like the TKC and Sahara, but it all depends on where you will be riding.
Check out the tyre thread for pics.

Seat height is 825mm, and it's a wide seat.

the Dt230 is a great bike in terms of how well it does its intended job (they are a rocket on gravel) but it ain't exactly 'he-man' material looks wise. I suspect the poodleskin cover just confirms most peoples suspicions

I was thinking of getting some pink ribbon things to hang off the end of the handgrips to finish off the look.
