Anyone else lose power around 9am this morn? Apparently a cable burst under a footpath outside Real Groovy which is literally just up the road from where I worked and I missed it! Anyone see it?

Here's the Stuff article: http://www.stuff.co.nz/4409708a11.html

Outside Real Groovy?

At that end of town the full eyewitness description has probably been edited.

The actual transcript probably read 'Wow man - it was like awesome eh? Like these huge flames right - you know like on the cover of Megadeath XIV "Spawn of Satans Child" were like really going for it and there was like a wall of sound which was a bit like the drum solo on (insert seldom heard title here) and I said to my bro - whoa dude - we gotta skate that - and like he did'nt have his board right so....

Yes I saw it. I went out to get a cup of coffee from Fidel's and just as I handed over my eft-pos card the lights went out.

I said, "A sign from God!" in an enthusiastic manner and the lovely lass serving me backed away equally as enthusiastically.

It is FUN watching young people trying to cope without electricity. The duty manager was freaking about the fuse board and I said, "Lets have a look."

No issues there.

I said, "I'll go next door and see if they've got power", and as I stepped out I saw a huge cloud of black smoke blow across the intersection.

I stepped back in and remarked, "I believe that God has another message for me, for I smell brimstone and sense the presence of fire."

The duty manager made a beeline for the kitchen as I walked off to check it out.

I got to the corner by the Dry Cleaner and there I saw before me an expulsion of smoke from the very footpath in front of Real Groovy.

The smoke died away for a moment and there shined a shiny demon.

And he said.

"Play the best song in the world, or I'll eat your soul", in a rather nasal twang.

Then there was a bang and a half metre jet of fire consumed the shiny demon, then the smoke started billowing again.

At this point the Fidel's staff had gathered behind me and I turned to them and said, "Damn, I knew I shouldn't have flushed that" and walked down to Midnight Espresso to get a Long Machiato from them instead. Much too dangerous near Fidel's.

Pfft - you should see what used to happen to telephones and exchange equipment when a 110KV transmission line falls on a phone line... Charred smear on the wall - phone blown across the room - choice...

Cool vid thanks et al. I work in the commarts building where TV 3 and various radio stations are based, they were all running around with video camera's etc. Shouldve asked them what had happened so I could've gone and had a looksie! Im guessing that there were no gas pipes nearby?!

Better do some work now I have no excuse.

Funny how happy our IT people looked reporting to us all that this time it wasn't their fault...oh well next time I'm sure it will be :buggerd:

"Play the best song in the world, or I'll eat your soul", in a rather nasal twang.
And you got five notes in to "Stairway to Heaven" and he said "No! no! no! Not fucking that! They always play that!". Then time stood still while the devil ate your soul and that's how you got to be in the IT industry.

No? That's what happened to me.

Dave

She clearly didn't have any concerns that there might have been a gas mains nearby....can't say I'd have been keen to stand around that close gawking :pinch:

Our IT crew loved the piccies too - thanks for posting that up whoever you were. :niceone:

Yes - he's kind of like the Scarlet Pimpernel:lol:. And FYI in case you didn't know that's the "Jim2 Memorial Motorcycle Park" in the first pic on that Picasaweb link.

Agreed - I stayed inside and watched whereas others went outside to have a look, and some of them got dangerously close to it. Who was to know what was going on under the ground there - seriously stupid behaviour.
