Ivan Segedin!

Seatbelt subterfuge kills driver
Taranaki Daily News | Saturday, 23 February 2008

Ivan Segedin's subterfuge killed him when he was in a head-on car crash while wearing a fake seatbelt, a coroner says.

"Ultimately Mr Segedin's actions in driving without a seatbelt have cost him his life in an accident that he may well have survived had he worn one," coroner Carla na Nagara said yesterday.

Mr Segedin died in a crash on July 22 last year near Okato, in Taranaki, from multiple injuries when his car crossed the road and collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle, the coroner said.

Mr Segedin, 39, refused to wear a seatbelt and had been fined for not wearing one 32 times since February 2003.

Examination of his car found that, though it was fitted with proper seatbelts, an additional belt with a long strap had been knotted above the seatbelt on the driver's side, providing a belt to simply sit over the driver's shoulder, Ms Nagara said.

Presumably this was to create the illusion to a passing motorist or police officer that a seatbelt was being worn when it was not.

Mr Segedin's car had an expired warrant, was full of rust, and an autopsy blood test showed he had taken methamphetamine and cannabis. But Ms Nagara said not wearing a seatbelt was the one variable that made the difference between life and death. "He died when quite possibly he need not have."

His fatal injuries were caused when he was thrown forward on to the steering wheel in a low-impact crash.

No blame or responsibility for the crash rested on the other driver, Ms Nagara said.

Yeah, so all the "motorcyclists" take the moral high ground.

You know - the seat belt was there, but because of is personal preference, he chose not to use it - he is a Darwin Candidate.

But, per km the seat belt hardly enters the road safety equation. The thing to ban is the motorcycle.

That would really lower the road toll.

Look at it this way.

When people choose to do something that is "less than the safety ideal" you should choose caution before you attack.

Because as long as the debate is "safe motorcycling" you win if you offer the ATGATT approach.

The trouble is, someone will re-define the question as "safe transport". Then, by your own definition, you are all Darwin candidates.

Thats because, someone will say "Pefectly safe transport on the bus was available.. but this Darwin dude because of personal preference chose to ride a motorcycle...what a loser !"

I'd give everybody in this post red rep if I had the energy.. you represent the very attitudes that will ensure that my grandkids don't ride a motorcycle.

I realise what you are trying to achieve, and I think you will find that all motorcyclists on this site want to live and ride for as long as possible. So there is nothing wrong with your message, in fact it is to be commended. Yet still people attack what you post. Wonder why? Might have something to do with the tactless delivery. You might think it's great for shock value. You might think that people are living in denial. Well I've got an answer for you, one you might not like. We know we are mortal, we know that people die on bikes. We know it first hand. We don't need some dipshit getting up on his soapbox about it and coming across like a jerk to tell us that we can improve our chances of survival. We know that. We don't all copy what we see on youtube.

Congrats - your handle is well and truly earned.

Nothing to do with him being a driver or a rider - or a pilot for that matter. He was a dinky dye, class A, self registering, 100% pure MORON. The motorcycling equivalent would be someone painting on a helmet to avoid the authorities pinging him for not wearing one, then smoking a bit of P, a bit of dope and heading out onto the road.

It's a bit like skydiving, if at first you don't succeed then it's probably not for you...

We all make choices and of course riding a bike does expose you, generally, to a greater risk. However, as with any activity, smart people do what they can to minimize risk. (ATGATT, etc.), As nice a person as this guy may have been, and of course I never knew him personally, his actions greatly increased the risk of death or injury both to himself and other road users.

It was ironic that the very thing that would probably have saved his life, was the very thing he actively avoided using.

It is a relief to know the innocent victim of his actions was spared. Other's aren't so fortunate. Imagine the uproar if he had lived while killing the other driver.

But, I think there might be a subtle difference though... Lemme check. Did your brother-in-law do P before getting in the NSX? Did he force his friend into the car? I didn't think so.

We all know the risk when we crank that handle or put our foot to the floor. I'm sure most have had a "uh-oh" moment where we realise that we could have been unlucky there and gotten maimed or killed. Some people are unlucky the first time.

If anything he was a lucky bastard for having a NSX - too bad he didn't take better care of it - and himself!

That sounds vaguely familiar. 's a long time ago.
He used to race V8s from what I can remember.
I should be able to tell you more after the weekend after I talk to my 'very knowledgable' brother.

Ivan Segedin the original owner of Segedins of Dominion road Auckland and saloon car driver is NOT the same person. His son Mark ran the business when it grew to include truck parts out near the airport. The Matamata importer was Bob Clarkson MP the owner of Bay Park speedway complex. Other Importers in Matamata were Chris Tynan & Dave & Francie Green. In Morrinsville Spinner Black & John Patton did the same.

Yep - We were given the grand tour of Spinners establishment on one visit after enquiring about a 454 chev motor that had been in a boat that had sunk in salt water. We were assured it had been stripped & cleaned properly then reassembled without requiring any replacement parts. We were then taken in to the engine blueprinting room where an employee was disc grinding near some short blocks!
We no buy...

I guess it was a blueprinting room because of the colour of the notices on the walls.:eek5:
My bro bought a "recond" motor off him and when fitted to the car it promptly ran a bearing.:gob::angry2:

Yeah, it was the Sidchrome Mustang...used to compete against the PDL Mustang, driven by Clyde Collins.

Sorry, years earlier. Jim Richards raced the Murray Bunn engineered Sidchrome Mustang. I doubt Sebedin raced against Clyde Collins in the PDL, possibly Leo Leonard in the PDL but I don't think so. I believe Segedin only did one season and sold the car to either Red Dawson or Rod Coppins.

I've ust been through the results board in 'Teretonga 25' and couldn't find his name, but Red Dawson figures in a Mustang. Rod Coppins figures in a Camaro.

'fraid the old memory banks are a bit foggy, so I feel I can't contribute any further.

it's a bit like skydiving, if at first you don't succeed then it's probably not for you...

I had a poster I spoke to once, it was a huge B&W of Jimi Hendrix, fuck he was da man eh?

However, all things come to pass and Peter Fonda appeared in full colour on that fuckin' Panhead. Nothing's been the same since; still chat to that poster of him and Dennis on the bridge on occasion, kinda like staring at the sunset or trimming your toe nails.

Every now and then you just have to do it.
