for your bike?
I really don't want to use my car much and have no qaulms about riding in the rain. Just not sure what damage it does to the bike?
Thanks

Bikes are, like cars, designed to be ridden in all weathers, so apart from getting dirtier quicker, no problem.
Proper gear and extra care due to the reduced grip, ie: longer following distances, and a place to dry your gear when you get where you're going and you should be fine!

They're designed to do it. Engines are waterproof, they have to be air-tight anyway.
The only issues come down to rust -- give chrome parts a wipe with a dry cloth when you get home -- or electrical problems caused by them being dodgy in the first place.
Pedants make sure bikes never go into the garage wet, but many people just don't bother on a commuter.

Thanks! Now I just gotta get a good tank bag so that I don't have a super heavy bag on my back everyday!

Yeah never bothered, ride it bring it home and into the garage. I don't bother drying it off.
In saying that my ZXR is entirely alloy, nil steel.

If you've got a Ducati - terrible. About the most non-waterproof vehicle I've ever owned. I can get all sorts of side effects - indicators stop working, neutral light stops, oil pressure light goes ON! Dunno what the new ones are like - but they couldn't be much worse than my old girl...

Get one of these:
http://www.sounddistribution.co.uk/products.asp?recnumber=4296
They're less irritating than a tank bag. They have a bra that fastens around the pillion pad/seat that you clip the bag to and are expandable. They don't get in your way when you are moving around and you can get to the petrol cap without taking the tank bag off.

Dope, I'd much rather have that than a tank bag. Haven't seen those before. Anywhere stocking them in NZ or only from that site?

Ventura is a NZ company. You can get them from any bike shop. Dold Industries are the distributors.

Errr? That's what they are called. You can get tank bras to clip non-magnetic tank bags to, or you might like to get the tank bra that is leather and has conchos all over it, to go with your cruiser image.

Sorry, I know, it's just my wierd sense of humour! I was picturing tying the "bag" on the back with her bra...:innocent:

Well when your as old as Jim2 it's not like your gunna to get a real girl on there, so a "tank bra pack" suffices.:bleh:

Have you triied an ABS bike in the rain?
I have and can say that it really is excellent.
Not a good idea to get used to it as riding a non ABS bike will come as a bit of a shock!

I ride both ABS and non ABS, in the rain and in the dry. Doesn't really make any difference . But one day it MAY if I need to do a ten tenths panic stop in the rain and swerve at the same time. If that happens I really really hope I'm riding the ABS bike.

Rain doesn't do any damage as long as you don't drop it. :P

I don't like pillions. Pillions are mostly poo. Except that BloodyMadWoman. She is very good at not interrupting service.
I just find the tailpack is out of the way and your body shields it from the worst of the weather. Plus I can get more in it than your average tank bag, and it doesn't get in the way when you are vigorously exercising your steed.

I have one of these. I bought it from Motomart. Put it on there, rode home and thats been it so far. However I didn't even notice that I had the thing attached.
Didn't know I could get a helmet in it. That is very helpful.

Unless it's a Suzuki then you've nothing to worry about. Lube the chain a bit more often. AFAIK they don't put down salty chemicals on the roads here so rust isn't a major. If you're gonna stick it in the garage for a week or so after riding it in the rain then it's best to give it a wipe over but used daily it's no problem.

I have ridden my Suzukis all weather for 6 years with no negative impact other than the headers rust out quicker.
My Kawasaki On the other hand was on a healthy diet of replacement fairing bolts and speedo cables.

Thanks for all the feedback. It gets parked in the garage every night so that's no problem. I'm normally good with lubing the chain but have been a bit slack so will get onto that asap :done:

Hey guys, for those of you in the Auckland area. I've just been to Red Baron and MotoMail to look at tail packs. Want to keep having a look around before I buy. Where else is good to check out?
Thanks!

Those odd tail-brassiere-seat-bag thingies are excellent. Haven't seen them before. 50 poond is a bit much, though -- if anybody sees any cheap knock-off versions, do tell.

Where'd you get it from? Red Baron only had Oxfords. MotoMail had Rjays. Both more expensive than your Ventura.

Where are they?
They are on Barry's Point Rd, just over the bridge on the North Shore.
There are several dealers located in close proximity and this makes a trip well worth while.
