Being of ancestry very close to Scotland (but not in it, we just like their distilled products and used to pinch their cattle from across the border in the old days:beer: where's the Scotch icon?)
I don't want to buy a decent kids size helmet that won't fit them for long.
Can you recommend a decent reasonably priced brand? I'm guessing there is no safe option but to buy a good fitting helmet i.e. no packers etc that will be safe...
I have a 7 yr old boy and 9 year old girl - they won't be on the back with me for long trip/touring at all, so it doesn't need to be super comfy for cruising long distances, just safe.
Thanks people.
JE
PS I buy a bike and the wind and rain starts. Go figure? and OK OK I'm a pussy but I have a car too, you see, and I'm old and the rain soaks into my aged skin.

I have a little wee head and a few years ago I bought a HJC child's helmet, think it cost me about $200, very comfy, not too noisy and a fairly decent brand, check them out.:niceone:

Frosty said go to mount eden motorcycles. Ask for Mark Wiggly. Last I heard he had a couple going for about $60 each.
Have kids the same age. Have to say but I don't find they out grow them that fast. My boys grow like weeds and in 2 years they haven't out grown their helmets yet.

HJC youth helmet-sorry diddn't realise you mean for onroad not MX
I bought one for Baby bikie a couple of years back for $140 from colemans suzuki on K road.
Sorry dude but its the one area I wont compromise.
Other gear I can possibly lend you for longer rides -boots n gloves and leather jacket etc

Thanks people. Very helpful - good point Jorja, I guess haeds don't grow as fast as the rest of them although I reckon when we are teenagers we have bigger ehads than they have at any other stage of their lives.
So has anyone got a cheap sidecar so i can take both of them...just kidding. Cheers I'll call Mt Eden MCycles.

Jeez, with that last post it seems like my ehad holds a smaller brain than my six yr olds...

Since there are a few threads about this. I picked one to post to.
I have found a guy on Trademe selling kids helmets.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=182805585
Looks like it might be a good option.
My daughter is nearly five and my son is 18mts so it will hopefully do double duty.

Just make sure that whatever you buy that the fit is good (close enough is not good enough, especially with kids helmets) also, get the lightest ones you can find.
Kids necks are easily damaged by overly heavy/bulky helmets.
To find your kids size if you're not sure - measure around the head about 1/2" above the eyebrow and move the tape measure up and down until you find the widest point, this measurement in cm (eg.52) is your kids (or your) helmet size.

You can put a thick wooly hat under the helmet to pack it out a bit. Will keep them nice and toasty warm too.

NO NO NO!! As I said above, kids necks are too easily damaged by too big/heavy a helmet and an improperly fitted helmet on anyone is quite likely more dangerous than no helmet at all!
It gives me the absolute shits seeing kids (and girlfriends/wives/partners etc) shoehorned into badly fitting gear, totally defeats the purpose.
Then I suppose some people aren't interested in safety, just 'appearing' legal?

If it's any help, I've dealt with this guy before and found him to be pretty straight up.

Have to say but I don't find they out grow them that fast.
Heads grow at about half the rate of the rest of the body - approx 1/3 of height as neonate, 1/6 as adult....(apart from all the bigheads y'know.......)

No - not unless by some fluke they have the same head size and shape.
And only if you don't value the safety of your kids. See previous posts regarding correct sizing and weights for kids helmets.
It's false economy and down right irresponsible as a parent to just get one helmet 'for the kids' as if you look after then they can easily be sold to someone else second hand when your kids get a little bigger.

I take offense that you are implying I don't care about my kids.
That is why I am trying to find a good helmet.
That is why they are not on the bike in my old helmet.
A key word in my post was HOPEFULLY.
I have been around the bike shops and none of the 'kids' helmets fit.
So i was looking at other options. I have no issues spending 200 bucks on my kids helmet. Plus the other safety gear that is required.
Thanks for judging me though.

Well, firstly I'm glad that you took offense as that shows you do value your kids safety!
And I wasn't judging you, only what you posted, perhaps you should re-read this and don't take it personally: No - not unless by some fluke they have the same head size and shape.
[I]And only if you don't value the safety of your kids.
and then relate it to what you posted: My daughter is nearly five and my son is 18mts so it will hopefully do double duty.
Good on you for being fired up about your kids safety and apologies for any unintended offence caused.

Ahh, the wonders of forum posts  The lack of visual and audible clues can easily lead to misunderstandings.
Anyway... my search continues.

Yep, I have seen something similar to the Arai thing before. That was when I discovered I had been wearing the wrong size helmet myself for over 15 years.
Looks like I might have to get a MX helmet, as there doesn't seem to be too many choices in road helmets for kids.

You aren't alone on that sizing issue, it amazes me how many people don't realise they have the wrong size helmet. Worse still, the amount of staff in bike shops that don't know how to size a helmet properly.
Selling your customers correctly sized safety gear (and the best they can afford) should be paramount to them.....after all a live customer is a damn sight more profitable for a shop than a dead one..
MX helmets are certainly a good way to go as far as the weight side of things go.

Um guys Been there seen that--er a "few" times.
Road lid wise HJC do/did a youth range of lids.
This is important because the actual SHELL is smaller and they have sizing in the liner to suit different size heads.
If money is no object Shoei do a XXXS lid.
Yes MX lids and goggles are available in kid sizes but be careful the chin of em gets slammed by the wind if they turn their heads. Hurts like heck Im told.
Jet type open face. lids are also available in kids sizes. Not so much face protection BUT they weigh bugger all.
Years ago FFM helmets in Waihi would actually make you lid liner --mostly for people with HUGE melons.
