Im looking to upgrade in a couple of months to either a ER6n/f or SV650/s.
I've searched and there isn't really anything about these two bikes in the same thread comparing each other.
Was wandering what the pro's and con's are of the ER6F/N and the SV650/s ? Maybe there are some people who have ridden both.
I can't get my full for two months, so I can't ride any bikes.
I will be using the bike for commuting to school/work and then open road riding on the weekends.

Overall the SV seems to come out on top, but its down to personal preference once you have taken them for a ride.

They are both very good bikes, I think the SV has got a little more hp, not that you would probably pick it up.
It all comes down to personal preference. I pick the ER6f at the time because I wanted a full fairing and the up right riding.
Take all three and more for a ride when you get your full, it's the only way you'll really know.

Try them both and buy the one you like best. You have to live with it, and we're all idiots. Our opinions are worthless. Your opinion is what counts.

I hope the VTR has served you well. Either choice will be a more powerful upgrade than the one I made. Have you considered the merits of a Ducati Monster?

Yip the VTR has been great, over the summer holidays i was commuting between Tauranga and Waihi Beach daily with no problems. It's still going strong, its had no problems.
No I haven't really thought about a Ducati, i just sort of brushed it off to the side, with the thought of the high cost of servicing and parts compared to the Japanese bikes.

Muwahahaha - Ducatis have longer service intervals than Japanese bikes and I've found that parts are cheaper than Honda parts. I nearly choked when I bought a new air filter for your VTR (just before you bought it).
Don't write them off for maintenance and running costs - write them off for having less hp per cc if you must but go and check out the parts prices first.

Ahhh! The mythical "cheap" Japanese Motorcycle service legend.
Mr McJim has made a very good point.

Wow, im in the same position as you, 2 months n counting the days till my full test, looking at a middleweight twin, now on a 250 suzuki single cylinder.
As im a bit more mature i have riden, if only for a short run, both. very much like the kawa over the sv for comfort but more choice of older sv`s and dealer is keen on getting my gn back to sell on. Just a thought, you r comming from a v twin so sv mite b more to what your used to with more low down power and overall hp, but er6 rocks in the looks dept n wont loose out too much on the road, just takes a little more work to keep up.

I really dont know why ,but hope you can explain
why is the service intervill so much longer on a ducati ?
ive riden approx 5200 km on my jappa and only one oil change nothing else done .
I expect the next oil change and filter and air cleaner ,should be good till at least another 3500 km

You really need to take them both for a ride. I was in the same pposition last week, just got my full and looking at a R6 or ZX6R. I thought they would be pretty much the same but they ride quite differently. Went for the Ninja because it felt better for all the commuting I do.

Ducati Service intervals 1994-2001 10,000km minor service (oil & filters and check up) 20,000km Major service(oil & filters and tappets and belts). My Honda was 6,000km service intervals and the parts cost more too.
Ducatis 2002 those intervals are 12,000 and 24,000.

Try them both. I think you might find the ER6 has fantastic handling and the SV feels a bit like a marshmellow in comparison.

Both in the real world have similar engine performance. My opinion is that OUT OF THE BOX the kawasaki is a better package to ride.
What would sway me towards the Suzuki is that suspension hot up parts and for that matter engine hotting up has become almost a case of do it by the numbers with a number of SV's being raced and there is a decent flow down effect of after market parts.

Do you think your bike needs a pipe?
I have read that the ER6 pipes are very quiet and also restrict the bikes power a little bit.

Both bikes are ok. This thread is not the first asking for comparisions. If you ride all 4 bikes you will have a better idea of things like the ergonomics which may or may not suit you. Choice of model and make will also depend on what your going to be doing with it. Neither bike is that good for pillion carrying if you want to do that.
The faired Kawasaki feels alot lighter than the SV650s with its handlebars more like a trailbike. You can't fit low clipon types as they will hit the fairing. But why would you wont to as the upright riding position of the Kawasaki is so much more comfortable for commuting or long trips at legal speeds.
Theres a guy in Ashurst with a Kawasaki 650F for sale with very few ks on it.

Thats not a bad idea with the SVs as they are the same price. A thou will last alot longer before its worn out. And will be better for longer trips.

I get a giggle at Ducati service interval advertising they have only been extended to 12k since 2007 and in reality owners will be doing at least oil at 6k regardless what the factory says. I got this from a Ducati dealer so don't start the poo-poo :zzzz:
I think that Ducatis got such a bad rep re servicing in the past that they have had to promote it. Never owned one so unsure if it was justified. Its been implied that shops were creaming it on servicing costs.
My Honda has 6 k intervals but these are basically a oil/filter, head gear is not adjusted until 24k. Most water cooled ones are similar. Oil/oil are 6k heads at 12.
Of interest my Honda service manual states oil/filter at 12k & sweet f-all at 6 - like a 10 minute inspection. No Shit. So even with NZ's 6k oil/filter requirement (why?) I'll be asking questions if there is more than 45 mins labour!
There is no reason bike shops cannot have set expectations of time intervals involved in standard servicing as cars do. My Honda Accord service book have specified times per service printed in the book. I never had one go over either!
Anyway - I've been a Kawa fan for years but in this case the V twin Suzuki would win me.

I rode both before plumping for the ER6n; mainly as I found it easier to ride and I thought it looked more modern.
Owned the ER6n for 15 months/20,000k and it was great - no probs at all, just the normal 6k services & lubing the chain :) You can get some quite good deals on new ones too.
The only thing I changed was the exhaust as they are a bit quiet as standard (also I found the standard mirrors crap, the optional "sports" ones are much better) - managed to get an Akrapovic at NZ$600 ish from overseas.
Biggest downside IMO compared to an SV would be lack of & price of aftermarket bits.
