View Full Version : Northland: N00BZ Northland Cafe Ride

Yokai

I've added the ride to the events list

How's this as a route:

http://www.meths.net/map.bmp

Longdrop in Titirangi (8:45) - Pootle out to Helensville, up to Warkworth and onto Leigh ... Then back either to Piha (where I have some friends playing Ultimate or straight down the 1 into AKL - or even (dare I say it) to Kumeu for a little glass of wine in the evening ... ?

Yokai

Who's up for coming out on Sunday 28th from Auckland out west and then to Warkworth and back? Or the other way around (depending on nice Cafe's) This will be a SLOW ride (I'm a learner and don't like going super fast yet)

But would be lovely to see some of you out there...

Yokai

I'd love to but I can't that early, just let me be the first to know when the next one is.

Lucyloo

I wouldn't mind a bit of a blat on Sunday......as long as you don't mind riding with an "older woman"!
I haven't been riding for very long...am on my restricted, so don't like to go too fast either...well, most of the time anyway!
Let me know if you want to go and I"ll give you my mobile number.
Lucy.

I could be keen also. I haven't spent much time looking at the scenery on rides lately, so a cruise could be just the ticket.

I was thinking about trying to organise something like this a while ago, but I'm too lazy and useless, so big ups Yokai.

Thining about a route, what about going up SH16 to Wellsford, then onto Leigh Sawmill cafe for lunch? I've heard it's quite a nice jaunt out to Leigh. What do ya think Yokai et al?

Nope - I'm a Learner - not allowed to. I only just got the bike about 2 months ago.... gissabreak! ;-)

I'm all about the :ride:

Yo

Lucyloo

Good for you!
I sometimes think that we can feel as though we are pressured into doing things that we know we are not confident enough to do, or indeed legally allowed to. Nice to see that you know your limitations.
I guess it's when we try to ride beyond our capabilities that we can find ourselves in trouble....or worse, hurt!

Mr Skid

Yo

Unless she falls off you'll be fine.

I doubt that the police (if there are any) will be doing random checks of bike carrying pillions (unless of course you choose to affix your L plate)

My concerns would be if you've been riding for two months would be your ability to deal with the change of handling dynamics of a pillion.

I've been riding for around 6 months and have pushed my limits in a number of ways, but taking pillions still gives me the shits.

If you were to edit your post to ask if someone would be able to take your 21 year old sister, who has just returned from a modeling contract in Europe, and broken up with her boyfriend last week, you might get more takers. :sly:

Yokai
26th November 2004, 10:19
So - I've added it to the Events List ...

Sign Up - let us know who's coming ...

re: The Pillion thing... I'm 34 (just) and quite a boring man... I'd like to get really comfy with riding my bike before putting anyone on the back of the bike .... that said - the GF does have her own helmet, and will be able to get her hands on a jacket and some boots + knee armour.

According the The Longdrops website, its at 421 titirangi road, and that map you posted has numbers on it, so yeah it looks like its right in the shopping centre area.

Ill see all you people there. Anyone leaving from the shore, give me a call

That SH16 is underated I reckon especially between Helensville and Wellesford.

Me, a nutter? How ever did you come to that conclusion? I felt I was riding quite slow today compared to last weekend.

This is comming from the rider that has to go around every roundabout 3-4 times..

It was nice to have a ride with a more casual pace for a change, sometimes a leisurely cruise is what's required.

Oh yes, and wasn't it a great idea of *mine* to go to the sawmill?

It was good to see people riding within their limits, we had no bins to report, and Yokai did a bloody good job riding at his pace, and not taking risks trying to keep up.

Me, a nutter? How ever did you come to that conclusion?

It was the shirt that gave it away...

Yokai did a bloody good job riding at his pace, and not taking risks trying to keep up.

Not my fault - that's the bike - not much top-end (actually seems to need some tweaking - I think I might have a slipping clutch or something, cos it wasn't running as well as when I went to Taupo ... Hmmmm - Oh well - Red Baron can sort it out over next weekend)

Had an absolute blast meeting you guys - Nice food - though would be nice to get somewhere a little easier for the fussy devils among us "I won't eat Ducks Livers" - wuss! (j/k)

The end was weird - I knew that Mike was gonna go off on his own, and then Zapf made that weird turn to follow him leaving two of us to make a weird U-Turn (my 3rd moment of the day {bastard UAV driver} - no bins though) ... I had a GREAT time - thanks - will organise another slow ride in the new year (probably something like Coromandel Loop) ...

Special Mention goes to Pap for wearing that shirt and teaching me how to counter-steer to get the bike going the way I want it to.
Oh - and also to everyone for waiting for me on the ride back ...

Wont take long to learn, but you really dont need to shift your weight around much (if at all). Some people have quite different riding styles, some like to hang right off the bike, others keep their bum planted and might just shift their top half.
Eg. If you followed Paparazzi, he's doing is best to scrape his bum on the ground around the corner hehe. However, im pretty stationary on the bike, and just move my top half into the corner.

Tips to start with:
1) Try to keep your head/field of vision horizontal when cornering.
2) To start with, keep your body upright while corner, ie, not leaning into or out of the corner, you'll find this helps when changing directions.
When you start to get used to that, and not thinking about counter-steering at all, then you can start playing with body position.

Re: Countersteering...

YokaiWell, if it's caused by your countersteering, then pull with the left hand instead of pushing with the right. But I'm sure it'll be only a very short time before you're not consciously counter-steering and the bike seems to corner by itself. Without also revving by itself...:msn-wink:

Hold the throttle more lightly. Imagine it as a giant, erect nipple thrusting outwards from the steering head, which you must tweak with infinite precision.

Works for me...

And now anyone who wonders why I occasionally fall off in corners and lie in the road with a beatific smile under my visor needs wonder no more.

Oh yeah. Don't forget to lead with your shoulder. Point the appropriately-sided shoulder where your eyes are looking, and the bike will usually be conned into going that way.

Yeah, don't copy my show pony antics. I'm just too much of a girls blouse to lean the bike particuarly far.

Sometimes I drop my inside shoulder a smidgen, if I'm not trying to get off the bike for a corner.

Somehow the ground feels that much closer, and I can tell my nervous little reptilian brain that it won't hurt as much if I fall off, as I won't have as far to fall.

So do you *actually* ride your bike?

Or is it a purely a socially acceptable reason for you to wear leather goods in public, and explain away the bruises to family members and work colleges?

Oh no, my cover has been blown!!!!! ;)

Yeah, I actually ride my bike...and love it! :ride: Wish I'd got one years ago!!!!! Bike that is!!!!

It was the shirt that gave it away...

Yokai

Yokai,
Heheh... sorry for that weird turn, just wondering what the others up to thats all. To stand the bike up more quickly and be ready for the next turn you can give it a bit of gas, then it'll stand up more quickly. And you should also go do the BRONZ course as well, damm good for learning to ride.

Attached is a file that might help u with some questions and riding.

Cya, Zapf
