Joined this awsome site today. Im 30 with 3 gorgeous kids .. Iv always loved Motorcycles .. it started with BMX racing and then I loved watching and attending local Motorcross Meets when I was younger and have a particular softspot for the Triumph as I have seemingly grown older, however, I never learned to ride! Always the spectator. TRAGIC. So .. things in life change and now its time I learned .. Im pretty much at my starting point .. have met two wonderful ladies in this site who have given me some fantastic starting point suggestions ... Im really keen to learn. So any helpful hints or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Youd think I would have picked up a few things along the way but I feel like a motorcycle virgin .. entering new territory  lol .. anyway .. watch this space xxx

Hi Fire-eyes, welcome to KB.

One of our active lady members "Shazz" lives in Hawera and works at Morriesons Cafe ... where she agitated the council for and won a bike park outside. "Ynot Slow" also lives in Sth Taranaki.

Furthermore (comma) the Herceptin Awareness/Protest ride with a whole lot of KBers will be calling at the cafe for afternoon tea about 3pm on Thursday March 6th. They're starting in Welly and staying NP that night. They'd love to have people join them

Will try to join the ride, might go from Waverley and stop off in Hawera, circumstances permitting.Bring on the cheesecake

For those wanting time from Hawera to NP allow 50 mins, can get busy after 4.30 or so ,but not to bad traffic wise.

.. eh ..

Congratulations on your spelling prowess :-) No, I'm not joking, the number of people on this site who can spell "eh" is exceedingly small.

Only two letters in a row, but even that's too difficult for most hereabout

.. Im really keen to learn. So any helpful hints or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to KB, Fire eyes! Lots of good people here with heaps of great info - and laughs to make it all easier.

Here is my suggestion for you: PRACTICE ! I don't mean riding around in traffic because all of us do this all the time. What I mean is set yourself a task and a place and repeat it until you are good at it.

Like this: pick a 90 degree corner - but not in town where kids dogs and cars will be a problem - choose somewhere out of town away from lots of traffic and with no hills houses trees that obstruct your view (of traffic). Then go into that corner nice and easy, do a U turn and go back 5 or 10 kph faster, and keep repeating this until you can go 'fast' without panicking. Note that you have to do it as a right turn and a left turn.

At that 'safe and now familiar' corner, try going TOO fast (but in a controlled manner) and just before you get to the corner practice downshifting so you slow to a manageable speed.

Next, pick a bumpy irregular road surface and PRACTICE again and again so that you can handle your bike at decent speeds.

Yesterday a young guy I know wiped out on a 90 degree corner - he did not have to go to a doctor or hospital but nearly did, and his bike has lost probably $500 resale value. He has ridden for over a month - BUT NEVER PRACTICED :nono: as mentioned above, so when going too fast he panicked and slammed the front brake too hard with the clutch in (not downshifting) - over he went! He is off work today.

As a mum with 3 children you may hear people telling you that biking is crazy as it is too dangerous. They are correct in a general sense - but if you follow all the safety advice and practice so you can handle various situations, then the danger is minimized.

Cheers and have fun!

Hey Fire eyes... welcome aboard. Lovely part of the world that (says the Stratford lad now residing in Orkland...). Take it slow, get the feel of the site and jump on in.

As Mrs Kendog said - no such thing as stupid questions in here, and there are some brilliant people, with the occasional spattering of morons and letches you get in any group. Make sure you get out and meet some of the people too. Find a helmet, jacket and gloves (or borrow them... just ask...) and you'll be on a pillion seat in no-time.

Over to you what you do with it from there.
