i was a barista... make coffee for a living.
doing the same thing for hours on end at pace has left me with damage to the nerves in my hands. have had 2 doctors and my physio tell me time to change career.
i am now on acc for 2 weeks then who knows. it will prob get renewed but still that leaves me on 80% of what i was earning previously

Find a career guidance bod, establish what you would like to do and retrain towards that.

Get in touch with ACC or other state agnecies and see if there is assistance in retraining (might be nice to get it paid for...!)

Then... Go for it!

I've never given it much thought. Prostitution is my life.

It's not alsways easy finding a direction that you like that doesn't continue to damage your hands but when you find one do talk with ACC & see what help you may get. The DR should put in writing for you & Acc you are not in a position to work full time in your current work & retraining is advisable.
Think long term work, play balance & minimising further injury to yourself when looking at new work.

Get yourself one of these things: http://www.powerballs.co.nz

They REALLY do work - even more so for preventing 'forearm pump' - you know - when you've got a death grip on the bars, due to tricky conditions, and then your arms start to get that burning feeling?

Bummer. Sort of know what that's like - had a busted wrist that doc's and hospital said wasn't - took 9 weeks before they revised their original diagnosis. :( Was off work for 11 weeks all up.

Oh well, keep them in mind - maybe in a few weeks when things start to improve...

Good luck!

Time to re-train into a career Fireball. University is an option but how any 'vasity student can survive for 3-5 years while studying I dont know.

You need to get Industry training (and there is a big difference compared to Uni). I'm in the I.T education industry and after 3mths training most of our students will start on 35k-42k. After doing our diploma course (9 mths) our students are getting jobs starting on 45k+.

There's a huge shortage of I.T professionals in NZ and there is no reason why more women shouldn't think of I.T as a career option. Think about it. :2thumbsup

Sorry to hear that Fireball. ANd I get the can't grip a bottle thing, I couldn't hold coffee cups, raise my arms above my shoulders and the biggest shit of all was that I couldn't pop my own wine bottles...how sucky!

All jokes aside though this is a shitty injury that is not obvious to others and sorry but you got it forever and will need to manage it always now that you've had it.

I had to do the 'change careers' thing, in my case it was a total blessing because it got me into an office and onto a more stimulating career than I might have considered otherwise. Funnily enough too though I was warned off PC work I've never had any issues prob cos I don't have to strike the pos that caused my nerve damage and postural issues and before you all jump on that I was a DENTAL chairside assistant for a right prick of a guy, who wouldn't adjust so that seating arrangements in the surgery over patients were comfortable. :bash: still glare at that bugger when I see him.

Anyway, the most helpful thing you can do for yourself is to treat this as an opportunity to try something else. You said you have some teaching quals...can I ask if you got out of teaching kids because you don't like kids that much? If the answer is yes...as mine also is...look into teaching adults. There are employers out there that hire trainers and pay for further education also - call centres for large banks are an excellent place to look into...and many of the large organisations are getting into workplace training and learning so you can study while on the job and they pay and you get quals.

Anyway - rabbitted on too long - good luck and may the force be with you :sunny:

i got out of instructing due to the adults looking at me as if i was some kid telling them what to do. i love teaching high ropes and ABL but when you are as small as i am look like you should still be at primary school you get treated like shit, also there are not many job opportunities out there.

I'm with the folks who suggest an interval of study and a new career focus, fireball.

With that injury, some sort of office job is probably going to suit you best.

Have you thought about looking into secretarial work? There are some fairly good one-year courses offered at the likes of UNITEC that'll leave you well-qualified, as far as I'm aware.

I worked as a part-time legal secretary to pay my way through uni. It's a good way to earn a low-stress living without having to think too hard.

the doctors tell you, you can no longer continue working in your profession?

Well, don't get bummed out by it. Consider it an opportunity rather than a disaster. Don't feel defeated or that you should feel like you've failed.

The IT industry pays extremely well, but also generates a disproportionate number of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and related workplace injuries compared to other sedentary jobs.

Don't rush into anything. Take the 80% and spend a few weeks chilling out and thinking about what you'd really like to do. Don't let yourself be pressured into making a choice immediately.

Hope you feel well soon.

Bugger about the wrist.
many moons ago I had a run in with a doc over how they wanted to treat for RSI, The theory went something like "we give you anti depressants to block the pain and help you relax and if you don't co-operate ACC don't pay" I chose a new line of work instead.

ACC should be giving you a return to work programme or if that's not possible they usually assess your skills and re-train you for something else.

Good luck

You'll work something out. Even if you have to go sideways to get to where you are happy.
Health us more important- believe me it'll piss you off big time if you can't handle going for a ride / on tour cause you your wrists are giving you so much shit that you can't hold the throttle open /pull the levers in.
Now concentrate on getting right as poss.
Remember even when riding you may need to stop a little more even for 5 minutes just so you can enjoy the ride, manage the day & be able to get up & ride the next day too.
It can be a hard thing getting over it & doing what you need for you & stuff what others might think.
good luck.

Fire ball.
Why did you resign?

I have had a similar injury as yours.
Used to work for AJ Hackett bungy. After six months I could not lift a glass of beer to my mouth. Life was not worth living!(kidding, just couldn't drink beer :(

Spent months off work fighting acc and specialists to recognise what ever was wrong. Never got an end result apart from being dumped by Aj Hackett, specialists told me to stop trying to rip off acc, I got no diagnosis, and I had no work or way of working as my arms were out of action completely.

Thing I learnt was, to just keep looking forward and not wait for help or even sometimes not bothering to ask for it. I had to go get it and find it for myself.

I was qualified as outdoor instructor too. Worked in the industry for 8 years.
Went and found a new career just as fun. Tour operator.

Just today my arms gave in on me again. But nothing a few beers cant fix, just as long as I can pick up the bottle:D

Hope you find a solution to your situation.

If I can help, you know the story.

Oh and worked in the ymca for 7 years so could possibly help you there?
