please dont laugh at my question but Iv been in Land Transport website and looking up the basic handling skills test .. Im assuming you actually need a bike to get past the first stage? .. so do you have to actually own a bike first or can you just burrow one to get through the initial stages?

You need the use of a bike for the Basic Handling test. Because it is a test to see if you can actually ride and control a bike
However, there's a gotcha. Even if you actually own a bike, you can't ride it to the test. Because you don't have a licence !
Fortunately, almost all the people who conduct the tests can loan/rent/otherwise provide you with a suitable bike.
So just tell them you don't have a bike (most people don't at that stage), and ask if they can suply one. if they can't try another provider.
Good luck and welcome

Depends on the place you do it at, on whether they have a bike or not.
I was specifically told that I wouldn't be doing it on my bike and that they'd supply one for me. Which makes sense.. Seeing as it'd be interesting going to wherever the lesson is on a bike when you don't have a license.
So I reckon now that I think about it, they'll supply you with a bike.

I would not be too worried.
I rode to the venue where I did my basic handling test... even followed the testing officer who was in his car most of the way to westgate...
I pulled up outside my local AA, parked on the curb in full view of all the people inside.. walked inside in full bike gear.. helmet in hand etc.. "I would like to get a motorcycle license please".
I mean come on... how else are you meant to do it without a HUGE inconvenience just for the sake of being 'legal' having a stupid little bit of paper in your pocket. Stupid.

No need to laugh. Tis a good question.
Depends on the place you are doing your BHS course/test at. Most of them have bikes which you can hire for a small fee. As you can't legally ride a bike to the testing or course site. If you have a bike, an option is to trailer it to the course, and you can use your own bike, but again not needed if they can provide one for you.
I purchased my bike before doing the BHS, but I still hired one from the course provider. Was heaps of fun......:)
A phone call to the Course provider you are thinking about using will confirm all your questions....:)

Jeez you guys! You didn't have to give her a technical answer...
No. You don't need a bike. You should be able to find a BHS certificate provider in your area (Driving/Riding School) who will most likely have their own bikes. Or someone from here will help you out if you ask nicely.

I used my 50cc Scooter when I went and did my BHS.
(and as it was a 50cc I could ride it to the course)
When I sat mine it was $100 if using own bike, or $160 to borrow(hire) one.
There were 2 of us on 50cc and 1 guy that turned up on his 250 (rode there with no license)

when i did mine, it was done at a local primary school only a 5 min walk away from home... so i walked the bike there and then walked it back. i discovered even for a short walk, bikes can get bloody heavy.
did have an old lady ask if i needed petrol though!

Hi Trace, I did mine at REAP and they provided the bike. When you ring up to book the course ask them if they have loan bikes. See if you can get the scooters. They get around it easily whereas the bigger bikes were a bit more difficult. Also, depending on how much experience you have had, you may want to do the basic bike course first. Up here, REAP offers an introduction to motorcycling course which comes before the basic handling course. On this, they teach you where the controls are, what they are for, how to use them etc, etc. - Only if you've never been on a bike before though. The basic handling course I went to didn't have much training, and if I didn't know how to ride a bike I would have been screwed!
Just ring up and ask around. Usually the bike shops have all the information you need on who runs the courses, so you may want to start there.

Hi Fire_eyes77
I am going to do my bhs on sunday afternoon with ridesafe (http://www.silver-bullet.co.nz/RIDESAFE/), I spoke to his lovely wife on Monday and she was very nice and encouraging. The site has all the details etc on it. Just the bhs test is $60 and that includes using one of their bikes.
I am sure there must be something near to you that is similar, come on kbers from Taranaki, someone must be able to help a girl out?

Actually I can see your big smile.. I am sure mine is its twin. Just a bit more info for you.
When you go for your learners; 10 of the questions will be specialist motorcycle questions. You can get a copy of these exact scratchy tests from your local AA for $5 for all of them. There are 5 test sheets and 1 is garenteed to be the one you get in your test.
You can also get the rest of the questions but they are $2.50 per sheet and there are 125 questions so the cheaper option is to use the online road code (http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/roadcode/theory-test-questions/general-questions.html). That's what I am using..
Once you have you bhs just go into the AA and do the scratchy test, eyesight and photo too. I dont even have to book in here in Pukekohe, they just told me to come in once I have the bhs test cert.
I am so excited about getting my learners. Got my bike on Tuesday so boy have I got itchy feet...:2thumbsup
Wish me luck for my sunday bhs and good luck with your course:cool:

I had a scooter for about a year then decided I wanted a bike so I did the BHS with my scooter seen as how I knew it well and they are way easier to ride because they are auto. Now im onto my third bike.

:sunny:Hi Blossom! Well ... wee bit away yet .. I want to do the intro to motorcycling first but the trainer here doesnt have a bike on hand and recommended I get my own. He suggested I hire but no I'm not keen on that at all so Im looking for my very first bike .. I tell ya Iv come across some beauties like the Ninja but Im worried about the panel beating costs involved lol so I'v been down to the Yamaha dealer almost everyday looking at the Scorpio for my first break in. Actually a new model is reletively cheap to what I thought 3'8 + orc my dilemma is thought weather to get a second hand one coz once Iv got my license etc Ill be looking to upgrade .. ut in saying that Im wasting time so i better make some decisions quick smart. More time spent thinking is more time less riding! ... ohh did you celebrate with champagne Blossom????????? :scooter:

lmao... all mine broke polishing the bike..:whocares:
I actually celebrated with an iced chocolate (been miss goodie two shoes trying to lose weight) So that was Heaven.
As far as the bike purchase goes there are a couple of thoughts I had...one newbie to another, If you get new then you will be super worried about denting/scratching it and I wonder if it will make me a more cautious rider? There is a lot to be said for buying new. At least you know your not buying someone elses problems and if your not machanically minded its a bit safer to go new I reckon. But 2nd hand has its merits also. cheaper etc. Maybe the naked bike option might work for you if you are worried about breaking the fairings?
As far as upgrading goes, have a look on tradme for resale prices on the bike and year your looking at. It may still be worth buying it new if you can sell it at a good price in a year or so. At the end of the day, you have to ride the bike so YOU need to be comfortable on it, with it and seen on it. I assume there is a certain ammount of vanity in all of us concerning our bikes. I know there is for me.
Good luck

Also, buying new (as I have), you may have running-in issues, such as stiff gearbox, loose nuts & bolts (hopefully not but it does happen) and the like.
The problem with buying second-hand is you could be picking up a lemon, it could still have loose nuts & bolts, or it may not have been run in correctly...
I'm sure there are a million other things! Best to get someone who knows what's what and take them for a test ride first and/or look them over real well...

Run off our feet we were! It was a real hoot... It blew it's guts out and totally poured down, as you know! The Marquee nearly blew away (it was set up on the top of a hill!), then the lads decided to re-light the candles at our table with serviettes and nearly caught everything on fire! LOL The bride was in tears and everyone else had a great time!!! It was a real PARTY!! LOL Oh, nearly forgot! One of the portaloos blew over with someone in it!!!! Yeah, we'll never forget that wedding...
Oh, and the bride chilled out in the end and went with the flow... I did and still feel sorry for her on her big day though! But, you can't change the weather now, can you?
Picked the bike up on Monday when we got back but haven't ridden much since then on account of the foul weather and work. Got to get a ride in today....

if it was done like on a 50cc scooter it should not have been - as most of them are classed as and registered as mopeds and it is in the Driver Livcence rules that a BSH test cant be sat on a moped.

Can you please point me where it says you cant use a moped for a BHS? I can only find a rule that says you cant use a moped for a restricted or full test.

I'll add that in Nelson, the details that the AA give you about the BHS say that you cant use a 50cc scooter registered as a moped. It needed to be over 50ccs and need a wof.
