Gotta say - pretty bloody happy with the deal that my man Tim has just done for me! Full cover for less than $400 a year. $500 excess which aint too bad either. All those things, that you hear on other company's ads that are just not true, are in reality actually all true at John Baker Insurance. Surprised the hell out of me! Give him a bell - 0800 65 62 64. Tim is a good guy.

And they provided some pretty damn snazzy (and thank gods not purple!) T-shirts this year for the Westpac ride!

AON quoted me $495/year by comparrison - well over $100 dearer! AND the excess they have is $1000!!! Hmmm methinks I'm VERY happy with the deal I got.

Unfortunately (as with any insurance company) you wont know how good John Baker Insurance is until you have a claim.
Last year a mate of mine binned it on the Napier - Taupo road.
Bike was wrecked, unridable and eventually it was written off.
He was brusied/sore and a little shaken up but otherwise ok.
The police attended the accident but he did not require an ambulance.
He is insured with John Baker Insurance and carries their 24hr Emergency Card.
Great!!
We'll ring the hotline, notify them of the accident and arrange transport for for the Bike from their prefered provider.
Easy right.
Wrong!! :(
The hotline is answered by a call center who said a representative of the company will call shortly and arrange a transporter for the bike.
3 hours later after calling the Hotline, 2 more times and being told a transporter was on their way. John himself called said they dont have a prefered transport provider and to call anyone we like.
Not having a phone book handy, we asked could he call someone for us.
No! was his answer.
Ok can you look up a number in the yellow pages for us.
No again!.
Get someone to ride to the nearest house and use their phone book or ring one of your friends.
Helpfull aye.
Upshot was we spent nearly 4 hours on the side of the road in the pissing down rain waiting firstly for John Baker to call back and then, after ringing a mate from Napier, to come with their trailer to pick up the bike.
Shoulda done this first up as it took him only an hour to arrive.
John Baker did eventually write off the bike and payment was pretty prompt, However they also left a customer stranded on the side of the road.
Was just lucky we weren't too far from home, This Time!
Who would you call if you weren't near where you live?
Both me and my mate have now purchased roadside rescue from AA.
He stuck with John Baker, I didn't

Really? The quote he gave me (as a learner) was not really very competitive. Having said that, I know the team are good buggers, because my dad will go no where else, and he gets a very good deal with them. But Tim sent me a personal email stating that he understands the quote is expensive, but they just dont focus on leaner riders. Fair enough, as we're probably a high risk group. I wound up with Kiwibike, because of their glowing testimonials and competitive pricing.

i was originally going to go with kiwibike too however the excess for accidents that i would have had was more with them therefore that heavily influenced my decision. I must say they are pretty good chaps too very friendly and great service.

P38 - that's a very concerning story. Certainly not good of an insurance co to leave on of their customers stranded like that - really not on in my book.

I would agree with Colapop,
I have had bikes insured with John Baker for the last 11 years and have yet to find anyone who can better his value for money. Many Ulyssians are insured with him and I have yet to hear anybody grumble about his service after an off.

Sorry to hear about your experience, P38. Tim recommended I get roadside rescue and gave me a contact to call, said if I told them I was referred by JB I'd get a good rate.
I just got my renewal notice from Tim and naturally asked both Kiwibike and Classic for quotes. Kiwibike was about $50 dearer despite quoting on a lower figure, (I'm getting back to Tim to reduce the sum insured for this year), and Classic was about even - again, though, on the lower sum. So even before reducing the sum insured, the other two best companies for bike insurance were dearer.

Have used John Baker Insurance for years now and have always found them good to deal with and their rates are very competative and comprehensive. Plus they also put money and support back into the biking community through various sources.

I agree!
I’m changing this year from Kiwibike and going through my Mrs (broker) and I’ll save nearly $300. The down side with that of course is that the policy wording is not as good and my theft excess will nearly double. Can’t have it all eh!

Yes.
I wrote my bike off at a track day, the claim process was fast and painless

+1
Stay clear of their Roadside SOS it is crap i've needed to use them 4 times and only twice have they bothered to attend.
However i have no problems with their insurance abit too much paper work for my likings but you get that.
I wrote off my RSV at the begining of the year and it only took them 2 weeks to hand me a $27000 cheque, so i have stayed with them even though my premiums have gone up for some reason ...... lol

Thanks for the kind words guys! I know insurance is a 4 letter word for some of you, so I try to make it as painless as I possibly can.
With regards to the posts from P38 and Hellraiser: I think your experiences are bloody appalling to be honest. Although we do not actually provide the roadside assistance (I wont go into details), we need to ensure that we can recommend a service that does what we tell you it does - come to your assistance in the event of a breakdown. We have spoken to the company involved about all this.
I personally have a roadside assistance policy with the same company, and to date I have no complaints. But then again, if I had been stuck out in the rain for 4 hours I'd be pretty pissed off.
P38, if you want to contact me direct on 0800 65 62 64 or 09 250 6006 regarding your compaint, I'll see what I can come up with.
Again, thanks for the kind words guys!
Tim.
p.s. I am on the way to getting a bike, about bloody time too!

Ok before I can give an accurate response to your original post (and hopefully offer some clarification): You do not have Roadside Assistance with us, but you do have a full insurance policy. You had an accident (not your fault) and called our 0800 number requiring assistance at the time of accident. Is this correct?

I remember this case very well.
This is certainly not intended as an excuse, because I think this is as rediculous as you do, but the company we go thorugh arranges the contractor to go out to the incident. So it is the contractor who advised they couldnt deal with bikes, not the company we deal with. I can assure you that this particular contractor has been dealt with, however.
We are now making sure that all our our motorcycle clients are flagged as "bikers" with the company we deal with, so in future this cock up will not happen again.
Thanks,
Tim

Understandable mate.
As the Motorcycle Account Manager at this office (flashy title I know) and as a regular on this website I want to make sure the people I deal with are happy at the end of the day, because if you are not happy you won't pay my boss, and my boss won't pay me, which means I cant afford to have a missus, which means I sleep alone at night - and I sure as hell dont want that!
Without knowing anymore of the situation all I can say at this point then is apologies that your experience with us was not up to standard. If you want to discuss further feel free to PM me and I'll see what I can do mate.

Both Myself and My mate mentioned in post #6 are Ulyssians.
That didn't seem to make any difference to the way we were treated on that day.
Yes John Baker does target this market. He personally attended last years Ulysses AGM in Gisbourne and spoke after the meeting to offer his companies services to all members at discounted rates.
Many Bike riders have joined Ulysses just to benefit from the insurance deals offered to members.
While I agree he does offer good insurance packages.
I also think he could greatly improve his after sales service.
