View Full Version : For sale: RF900R

As per title up for sale is my current pride n joy...
A 1994 RF900R
I will list this on TM at a higher price, $3950 is for KB'er members only :niceone:
I got her 1st of August last year at 75 thou & have placed an ear to ear grinning 15 thousand since then (90,000km currently).
If your looking for the best value for money fast road bike then you simply cannot beat these bikes, nothing will come close at this price range. I did a huge amount of homework prior to buying it so can say this quite confidently.
The RF900R was built as a stop gap bike to slip between the mighty GSXR 750 & GSXR1100. In doing so they used the bottom end from the 1100 motor which obviously has a lot less stress. The 1100 motor was already famous for being bullet proof which has in turn made the RF's power house that much more reliable, these motors are good for HUGE mileage some have said 200,000 plus.
I have serviced the bike 3 times since ive had it, the last was Sunday 24th. Have a very near new 180/55/17 Metlzer Z6 on the rear & a brand spanking new Metzler Z6 on the front. Have put brand new sprockets & an X ring chain on 10,000km's ago as well as a near new rear brake disk & a full set of sintered pads all round (the pads get stickier the hotter they get). Also switched the speedo over to a brand new mile an hour one, actually shows both mile an hour & Km/h but reads the distance in mile an hour. Only reason I did that is the original one only went up to 180 (still have the original which will be included in the deal). I also just replaced the broken speedo cable. Also comes with the packrack & even the key for the lock nuts (very rare). Brand new wing mirrors with longer stem's which gives you so much more usable visual area.
The motor runs like a dream, no knocks or rattles, just purrs along, has never given me any of trouble or the previous owners to my knowledge.
She develops 135BHP (118 at the wheel) with a 100nm of torque @ 10,000 (redline 12,000) weighing in at 203kg dry, will pull zero to 100 in 3.1secs & top out at 165 miles an hour (265km/h) so as you can see it's not too far off the latest bikes.
A really easy bike to ride all round, city riding is no problems at all & she just loves the open road, you just have to watch out when parked on hills, if you loose your balance past a certain point she is gunna go over............I know I did it twice in the first week of ownership, one on either side :crybaby:
So yeah the paint job was tip top prior as it hadn't long been done. Other than some of the obvious overspray on cables in a few places & a few stone chips on the front it's a very nice paint job plus the two stationary drops on either side.
Im only selling as im looking at upgrading.
Can't think of anything else at this stage, any questions fire away.
ps: almost forgot.....in the side compartment I mounted a twin power point & wired it to the battery for cellphone charging, a light (if camping) & of course a radar.
And here is a link to the picture (and the full story) of one of the drops. The other drop pales in comparison to this one, hardly any paint came off.
http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=55156
pps: I will be on holiday for 10 days in a week & a half before I move into the new business so I could possibly even deliver it depending on where you are.

These bikes are a bloody bargain and you're selling it too cheaply Boob.
Unless you get yourself a Hayabusa or ZX12 or ZX14, you're probably going to find an 'upgrade' is unlikely to be one.
You can keep up with nearly anything on the road on one of these. I can testify to their bulletproof-ness. Mines done 71,000 MILES and the shims are still within tolerance and, while they've been checked, they've never needed replacing.
Someone's getting a great deal.

Also forgot to add... this model bike broke the world record for speed set over 24hrs in 1994, they ran two factory bikes at an average speed of 246km, and the fastest lap 268km, total distance 5904km.

Na didn't get the seat done in the end, I figured if I dropped it again its already scratched & yep the height certainly played a major part.
what the hell do you think you're doing?!!?
I have a cunning plan, so cunning you could put a tail on it & call it a better bike

You won't have that long, it will sell by then, if you are serious about this bike I would check it out asap as I have an opportunity on another specific bike which has a time limit on it, if the deal doesn't happen then ill just keep this bike.

Your price really is too cheap, even with those miles. Awesome machines the RF's!

only reason I'm thinking of selling is just to upgrade to something a bit newer and perhaps italian:whistle:
had it 9 months, done about 15000km, 2 oil changes and filter so far, replaced chain and sprockets, rear disc, all pads, and in the process of doing the alternator drive bush (which I discovered is a known problem)
goes brilliantly, no complaints with it, power to weight is impressive and I really love the touring range with the 21 litre tank; you get about 280-290km before hitting reserve and then you've got another 80-90 after that....and this is 2-up and I'm not shy with the throttle
has a few marks on the sides where it was knocked over while parked (previous owner) but only minor.... it'll be a few weeks before its on the market but they really are good value for money
edit: if i could keep it AND buy another i'd do it....they're a bloody handy machine

You're not getting all melencholy are you.The GPZ/GPX 750 were a damn good bike, mate had one prior to buying a GSXR750 in 1986.He had an off as you take the right hander going into Eltham(from south) on his GPZ,was doing 120km or so,hit a huge hole which tossed him into the verge, handled that but hit a pothole again and slid on the grass.Smashed his rear wheel when it hit the kerb.
Sounds like a good buy was had for the RF,can be bitter sweet when sold, but then along comes another bike hopefully as great.

dont know much about the GPXs....test rode a 600 a while back but wasnt impressed
the 900 was a serious weapon tho, water-cooled 16v dohc in the mid-eighties was a serious piece of machinery. i had some great runs from chch thru to nelson and picton, would love to have one in the shed for the odd fang
will definitely miss the RF if sold. when i said i'd like to keep it and buy another i'm dead serious....ideally i'd have a 1-up bike and a 2-up bike but right now it's not really a goer...

Still have visions of Crozz on his Kawa 900 at Wanganui eons ago.
Like the idea too of two types for the shed, the RF is an ideal two up beast, shame they don't make a similar one, mind you spose the GSX Katana is close, the GSF Bandit is a little bigger though.
Pain when the budget won't stretch to enable it to be kept, still depends when the newer bike is found, then maybe the budget can accomodate it.

Yeah the clown has pulled out, she is back on the market. Geez some people crack me up, no drama in changing ones mind at all, it's everyone's right but to make up bollocks that your still keen on buying it but the only insurance company you have tried won't insure you is just rubbish, AMI aren't the only insurance company, & im sure far from the best at bike insurance
ps: who on good God's earth insures a $4k vehicle? What a waste of $$$
Statistically you would probably pay for it twice by the time you had an accident :bleh:

Na all good mate, no mess, just cracks me up how people cant just be honest & say they have had a change of heart & leave it at that
No drama Splatty, was kinda in two minds after he had said "done deal", the reality of not having it had sunk in but will still leave her up for sale me thinks. God I love this bike & as me old china Yod says I would most definitely keep her if I could afford to have two nice bikes, but the bike's i'm looking at I will need to include the funds from this sale. A 2up suitable sports/tourer & a hard core sports bike sounds bloody magic, a short sharp blat for the full sports & a comfy yet capable of being brutal sports/tourer for longer rides

WTF about insurance, why AMI? Shit mines fully insured for $4000 and includes race days(yeah right),excess is $400 or so,but I'm only rider insured and costs $245pa.
When I bought it I tacked it on my home, contents cars till I'd found a bike company, the policy for the bike was double cost than now,but at least gave me a couple of weeks to suss out policy for her.
Have the balls to say changed me mind is all people ask,and if ya have two people chasing it is a real piss off when you lose both buyers cause of one guys change of heart.

*sigh* Not only is my bike insured with AMI, but it's insured at Market Value, which can be appraised by a motorcycle dealer of MY choice (you get where I'm coming from here?) It costs me $32 a month Fully Comprehensive.
At the very least 3rd party a bike.

Fuckin' bollocks.
Put it up next to an SRAD gixxer, or an Aprilia Futura. It just looks like that because it doesn't come to a point like most bikes. Its no wider than most big bikes.
he he ill have a closer look next time at them both :2thumbsup
WTF about insurance, why AMI? Shit mines fully insured for $4000 and includes race days(yeah right),excess is $400 or so,but I'm only rider insured and costs $245pa.
When I bought it I tacked it on my home, contents cars till I'd found a bike company, the policy for the bike was double cost than now,but at least gave me a couple of weeks to suss out policy for her.
Have the balls to say changed me mind is all people ask,and if ya have two people chasing it is a real piss off when you lose both buyers cause of one guys change of heart.
Shit that's not bad Tony, that's almost worth it in my book (remember i'm part Jewish  )
Yeah no real drama as said, just makes me laugh. No hurry in selling her, i'm flat out doing huge hours at present so won't be riding much for a few months at least :crybaby:
