How to go about getting your Learners?

Hello folks.

What would be the best way to get your learners. I thought the only way would be too buy a bike and learn on it in your back yard. But then how would you get it to the testing site (i dont kno any bikers)??? And having no experience would it be a very good i dea to have one of those bike lessons.
And lastly is it possible to get your learners without 1st owning a bike?

Hello, I have recently got my learners licence in Nelson.You need to do the handling skills test first (practical) and its a joke cos it wont teach ya stuff all.To do this course in Nelson you need a reg and warranted 250,(or nifty 50)As they wont supply or lend you one .Go into Morleys(Honda) and ask them for the phone number for the practical test,as I cant seem to find it.(youll have to ring and book it). Barry is the instructors name anyway.Make sure they give ya the number for the Nelson test.As they gave me the chch one:(They run the test on Saturdays at the Annesbrook church carpark (next to placemakers),go and watch a test first if your new to bikes.
I have since found out they do it different in Christchurch and you dont have to turn up with a bike. What a joke different city different rules.:Pokey:
Course was $49.50 for 30 minutes max:(

Pretty grotesque when you think about it. Make a system that'll require you to break the law before you actually can observe it... :nono:

Dunno about Nelson, but here in Chch I did my BHS with Mainland Driving School and took about an hours lesson on basic bike handling since I had never been on a bike before. It was easy and the test was easier yet.
Then you go and do the scratch test and off you go.

Yeah, pretty much what others have said: look around (online or ask in local bike shops etc.) for places where you can sit your BHS cert. I did mine with a guy who runs them at various locations but the cost was quite a lot more than others quoted here. It was over a year ago for me and i seem to recall it was about $150 approx. but that was for a full 3 hour course which included talkies first, then the practical. It also included the fee for sitting the test at the end if you were deemed ready (all of us on the course did it immediately afterwards). At the end of the 3 hours we all walked away with our little certificate ready to head down to the local AA or VTNZ to do the scratchy. Simple as. :niceone: Oh, and John (our instructor) had a wee stable of suitable bikes on site from which he could allocate to each of us according to size etc.

there isnt much choice here in Nelson, when I was waiting to do my test i saw someone ride their bike to the test! (no licence) If ya havent riden much I would suggest go to chch and do a proper test there.:niceone:

Wellcome Oli, well you've come to the right place for advise. If you havent ridden before it pays to buy a road legal junker and get to a point where you can move around without wobbling. The BHS course is pretty easy from memory and you can rent a bike from most organisers for a very reasonable price. But once you start it gets under the skin badly.

Hey I also want to sit my BHS and need a name of a good place to sit it. I've had enough training so I jsut want to sit the test and I heard it can be as cheap as $40 but everywhere I'm looking has it for at least $80. Any ideas?? I'm in Auckland
