Methinks the police should get their heads out their asses and start getting a procedure in place for initiating pursuit. (Or get a new one as the current doesn't work very well!)
My money is on the fact that nothing is going to happen!

I know what happened here.
The cop was sitting quietly in his car surfing Kiwi Biker. He had just finished reading past threads about U-turning HP officers and about whether *lifesavers* and *head-checks* were indeed the same thing.
He then did a very public-spirited thing and decided to take affirmative action to unite both strands of thought in order to make life easier for Kiwi Biker readers and Moderators alike.
Yet-to-be-named Officer, you are a Prince, and forever in the debt of our readers.

oh joy yet another officer of the law tries to take someone out with a bad U turn!! all for a guy doing 122k on his bike coming the other way.
Was it worth it? could have resulted in a death, he was lucky this time! have they not learnt yet that deciding to make random u turns at speed is a real bad idea?
am i over reacting? this is 3 now in how many months?
A police car has been hit while making a U-turn in Taranaki in the latest incident of its type, following a two similar crashes which injured motorcyclists late last year.
In yesterday's incident, a police highway patrol car was hit by a following vehicle as it made a U-turn to chase a speeding motorcyclist near Midhirst.
The two-car collision happened on State Highway 3 just north of the township about 2.20pm.
Police said it appeared the patrol car was attempting to do a U-turn to chase a speeding motorist when he was hit by a following vehicle.
Senior Sergeant Shaun Keenan, Stratford, said police would be conducting an internal investigation and would be speaking to both drivers and witnesses.
Mr Keenan said the northbound patrol car had clocked a southbound motorcyclist doing 122km/h.
The driver of the vehicle, who would only be known as Mark, said he could have been in the police officer's blind spot when he attempted to do a U-turn.
He had pulled out to pass the patrol car, using the passing lane, when a motorcyclist sped passed in the other direction.
"The cop put on his brakes and indicated left and went over to the side of the road and then turned straight in front of me."
He said he was only doing just over 100km/h.
Mark said he could not avoid hitting the police car.
"I just braced myself for the crash."
Neither driver was injured in the crash, which caused moderate damage to the patrol car and extensive damage to the other vehicle.
The highway was reduced to one lane, backing up traffic in both directions, for about 50 minutes while emergency services cleaned up the mess.
Two accidents involving police late last year have led to questions over the safety of police turning on busy roads.
In December, two motorcyclists were hurt after a police car did a U-turn in front of them on a tight, windy road in the Upper Buller Gorge near Nelson. The officer was turning to chase a speeding motorcyclist heading in the other direction.
In a second incident in December, a motorcyclist was seriously injured when a police car, responding to an emergency call, made a U-turn on State Highway 2 near Maramarua in Waikato.

Simple thing is the cops' adrenelin kicks in when he gets into pursuit mode, easy to miss a car,or bike, imagine if it was a 40tonne truck.
Still if by waiting another second before completing the turn means he will miss out on invoicing a driver,so what, just radio ahead, the officer can give details, albeit a bike to another officer ahead, that way the biker wouldn't know he has been spotted, the biker might slow down for a moment, but then speed up again, then get caught.
Also it was only 122km,but if it was in Midhirst that is 70km.

Returning from Hamilton to Auckland saw a police car (Latest model Commodore) do a dodgy u turn at Ngaruawahia yesterday. We both rubbernecked to see if the lights went on, but they didn't. My point is that the way the turn was carried out, no indication and cars behind brake lights and looked like the same for the traffic comming the other way. Public are starting to get critical over you guy's habits. You have got to get your union involved to stand up to those, who reap the benefits of your actions. I reckon it's getting to the stage where the worm will turn.
I don't fancy turning up in the situation of the poor prick on TV who got so frustrated with tagging that he took the law into his own hands and has now f.cked his life and that of his families and the original offender has the sympathy of the public. Yes, it is legal. Yellow centre lines only prohibit overtaking moving vehicles unless it can be done without crossing said yellow line, where said yellow line is on your side of the centre line (there are exceptions involving non-motorised vehicles).

Double yellows were mentioned. That suggests that there is a visibility problem in both directions at that point. Whilst it may not be illegal to turn across those lines, it could hardly be considered advisable. Especially dodgy to actually lie in wait where such lines exist.

Would it be acceptable for a member of a Police armed response unit to accidentally shoot and maim a passer-by? Would the officer concerned be allowed to continue as an armed officer until the resulting investigation had been completed?
I fail to see why the two situations should be treated any differently. In this case and the two like it last year, as well as in my hypothetical situation, the officer concerned showed a monumental lack of judgement. If an officer really is capable of performing highly suspect manouvers in order to secure some extra revenue, then he should be stood down from driving until the results of the SCU investigation have been completed. And if he's shown to have caused the accident due to his desire to start a pursuit, he should never be allowed to drive a Police vehicle again.

The police tell us (and rightly so) that motor vehicles are potential weapons. When in the wrong hands (drunk, too loose etc) they can and do kill people, just like guns. We aren't about to remove guns or cars from society so accidents will continue to happen and when they do the people who operate the weapon need to be made accountable for their actions, regardless of their occupation. Hiding behind the "execution of their duty" mantra is not on.
Doing a u-turn on any road, be it a back road or state highway, is a dangerous operation and you must be 100% sure that you are doing it as safely as possible. Had the officers been on motorcycles I doubt that they would have been so careless. Some are behaving like blinkered cowboys in the pursuit of their 'performance expectation' with a callous disregard for anything or anyone to get their tickets written up.
However, the police have a whitewashing juggernaut in the form of the PCA to cover everything up so mark my words; nothing will happen.

Yeh just like how 'nothing' happened to the cop who injured the biker doing a U Turn down the line.
Just because he's been committed to stand trial doesn't mean anything will happen.
We live in hope of equality though. And I assume you mean the Buller Gorge incident?

Manapouri!
I can play this game too!
Not difficult to turn your head, before you turn your car though is it?
Personapouri in this sad PC day and age. When Sue Bradford is in charge it will be thingapouri.......................or something like that

God I used to love doing handbrake turns when I worked for the gummint and they provided a car. I'm not allowed to do them anymore :(
You WORKED for the Gummint, hell man you deserve a medal or else certifying, as you would have been the only one working. :2thumbsup
