Just like it says on the tin. Had the design planned for about 2 and a half years, just to make sure I was positive about the design. I got told by mates not to go too small, So I decided on a half-sleeve on the Right Shoulder. Had it drawn up by Adam Craft (http://www.adamcraft.com/home.html) at Illicit on K Road. Fucking awesome dude.

It's a Phoenix, rising from the Ashes, and with it, it's carrying a 5-point star in it's claws. The star is supposed to look munted, as the idea is that it's gone through hell and back, but the effect will really come into place when it gets shaded. Had the outline and black shading done yesterday, 3 and a half hours on the table, and I proved what a wuss I really am. The bits just under my arm hurt like fuck.

Got 2 more 2 hour shading sessions booked, can't wait till it's completed. As you can see in the pics, it's still a little raw, and it looks a shitload more impressive in person.

I am so stoked, everytime I walk past a mirror, I can't believe it's finally started!

There is a fairly long story behind it, buy me a beer, and I may just tell you.

What a good way to start off getting ink'd. My first ink was a silver fern..only bout 4 inched long.
Nah mate, you are not a woss...not after 3.5 hrs under the needle. Looks like its gonna be a good piece. Anyway...Nice Job...
...Bren

P.S I know what you mean bout the bits under the arm. My Dragon was the same deal.

Just make sure you put the moisturizer on it morning and night, and if ya can bout lunchtime too...

Oh crapola :gob: If'n we are driving down in the cage and you got that mean arse tatt on, peeps will think you is a gangbanger mofo'!

Guess I should get a removable dragon tattoo to complete my asian/yakuza look ... sorta like an exchange trip between East and West crime families

Nice looking piece of artwork though ... but heck if I be the one to get a tatt done (me being a wuss and all)

Cool. Yeah it hurts all-right, after the last of my sessions with Adam and two sleeves later I finally worked out the tricks to tattoo pain management.

Plenty of sleep.
Big breakfast.
Lots of water.
No alcohol the night before [ I'm told no drugs as well if your a user].
For the first sessions on a piece that size [outline, heavy shading] take two nurofen before.
Accepting the pain, smiling and staying calm and focused on the end result helps a great deal.Good luck.

Cheers for that, I found after the first 20 minutes the endorphins (spelling?) kicked in, and made it a little easier. Will definitely take a few Nurofen's next time. Adam managed to keep me pretty sidetracked by talking endlessly about cool bands.

I think you should concentrate o nthe pain its a right of passage. Escecially if the tatts have some meaning or your getting a moko.

Well, yes, but there is an argument that says that post inking treatment helps stop feathering on the hard edges and makes it less likely for the ink to bleed over time.

The best bet is go and get matching tats with your girl - you rub the slippery stuff on her - she rubs the slippery stuff on you...

Like Christina said:

Nice tat :niceone:

All advice previously given are great, and Bepanthen is definitely the trick, just make sure you apply it very often. The least your tattoo will dry out during the first few days, the least likely you are to have scabs which can leave "scar marks" depending on how well your skin heals.

Oh and against the pain: focus on breathing evenly and calmly. You'll be amazed how much it helps.

doozy
29th February 2008, 10:32
I've had a reasonable amount of work done, full sleeve one arm and a couple other little ones, some things I've found help it heal fast and well:

Drink plain coke while getting inked, helps keep your blood sugar up especially if its going to be more than 3 hours (6 hours was my longest stretch :D )

When you get home, clean it real well and very gently with antibacterial soap, massage in some bepanthan, it will hurt and make you want to throw up but it really helps, re-wrap it in glad wrap and stick a bag of frozen peas on it to help sooth and cool it down. Leave it till the next day (replacing the glad wrap before you sleep on it and re-apply the benpanthan at that point). The key to make sure it heals well and fast for the first week keep it moisturised with the cream all the time, if it dries up it will scab, scabbing is BAD, a scab sucks colour out of the tattoo and gives it a less than perfect finish, anywhere between 3-7 days it should 'peel' like sunburn, its important to let this happen on its own rather than picking/scratching it off, again this affects the colour of the finish.

A weird thing that happened to me alot after id been in is being out in public people want to touch/grab it for some reason, the whole 'gizz alook' deal(especially bad in supermarket queues), remember all these people are filthy! Touching = bacteria!

Ongoing just remember to keep it well sunblocked in the sun to stop it fading

Cheers Tex. Waiting for them to heal properly then will post the finished work.

As for the pain, the needle overrides the constant pain I feel in me dodgy neck giving me a plesant relief in a way. But yeah your right bro about right of passage, you have to feel the pain, embrace it, and smile with it.;)

Someone mentioned HTFU....I think of the Kirwin ad. 'hardening up is not what you need' but guess it works for some.

3 1/2 hours is pretty long..was he tattooing the whole time?$150 an hour, although he did only charge for 3 hours. Got an estimated 4 hours left on it yet. Fortunately, him being fully booked for 2 months gives me time to save.

I had a 5 minute break when he finished the outline, before the shading. Just enough time to get a drink.

$150/HOUR!!!
what the fuck is he tattooing you with, liquid gold mixed with virgin blood?!

...i'm sorry. i thought my friend was kidding when he said illicit charges more than $100 an hour and takes forever to do them..the pic included is my latest piece, its really, really well done and it cost me $140 so far and took the guy 40mins. i've worked in a tattoo parlour before and it bothers me immensly how some tattooists out there are ripping people off..

Gubb

it cost me $140 so far and took the guy 40mins.

That works out to $210 an hour. Who's getting ripped off now?

So what? I wanted someone that I trusted, and knew would look after me for my first piece of work. He explained everything to me in complete laymens terms, he managed to turn a bunch of rambling, incoherent ideas and keywords into something that I will be proud to wear. Adam has proved to be an absolute stand-up guy. I'd rather pay extra for quality if I have to look at it every day for the rest of my life.

Each to their own.

Nice Ink Hubba.

Got my first one, after pondering designs for lots of years. Finally decided on one.

Done by Gill at Tattoo City Wellington

4.5 hours - one sitting - couple of ciggies breaks for Gill - Only started to burn in the last 20 minutes or so.

Got to go back at some stage for him to complete the background.

I put Bepanthen on it once in the morning, once at lunchtime, and again in the evening. Patted dry after showering not rubbed dry. No scabs at all..

Fuck it. Here's the story.

I was diagnosed as clinically depressed 6 years ago. Since then i've battled with it every day of my life. Suicide attempts, weeks where I can't even get out of bed, you name it, i've been through it. Lost 2 great mates to suicide as well.

Anywho. To me, the Phoenix represents my struggle. Rising from the ashes, means that tomorrow can always be a better day, and no matter how deep and dark I feel, I will get better soon. Today is not the end of the world. The bird aspect of it also represents freedom of the soul. It is also looking forward, towards the future.

The star that it is carrying up with it represents 5 things that have got me through some tough times.

Friends.
Family.
Love.
Honour.
Integrity.

The star is supposed to look deformed, as though it has been dragged through hell and back (just as I have been), and that effect will come with the shading.

Sappy, I know, but it means a lot to me, and I am utterly stoked with how it turned out.

Had the second session on Thursday last week.

Still pretty sore, with some spectacular bruising this time. Session lasted just over 2 hours.

One more session to go in July (he's so fully booked it's ridiculous) to get the background burst filled in (white at the center of the circle, blending into a bright blue) and the dark wind patterns put in on the top of my shoulder, and on the back of my arm.

Mine has similar meaning as you mentioned, who cares what they think it is your decision. When mine was done the guy wrapped gladwrap around the arm,and when I got home he said take a shower and have the water as hot as bearable to seal it,then pat dry,and use moisturiser/aftersun lotion, worked well no peeling or scabby look.

Got a story behind it?

sure does!!!... tiger vs dragon = my fave animal vs my zodiac (that's what originally got me to go for the idea) then i was trying to find inspiration for the design so i looked up on the internet etc.. and found out that it has a perfect meaning for me : it symbolises yin yang and the balance of the universe, as well as the different forces struggling within the universe. or something to that effect really. I chose the more tribal style because it links back to ancestral times, such as the neanderthals or early homo sapiens. and the tribal style also links with the amazon women.

so yeah, i put quite a lot of thought into it, i think it really describes a certain part of me ... heh.

True, thinking of one to incorporate my family history crest/celtic.My first onehas an eagle head with 3 roses,symbolises-freedom(eagle)and 3 loves in my life x3.i.e mum and kids, wife and kids, mum and both grandmas, and my 2 girls names surrounding it,my design. Soppy but no use putting shit on for the sake of it.Brother surprised me with his armband he had done a couple of years ago, looks good,he thought they were a waste of time but decided to do it.

Yea you are right, although I was fully wasted when I got mine from the prescribed medicatios I had been on for the previous 7 months and how fucked up they made me. Ive got a half celtic and half maori arm band that intertwines in the outer arm that Id love to get some day. The one Ive got is just to signify my battle with a close to death experience and coming out the other side changed for life. Was very important at the time of getting it done and Im glad its there. Ive designed more to go with it but part of me says just leave it as it is.

Got my first tattoo this last Monday night. Will put up pics a bit later. Had it done on the underarm of my right arm. SHIT IT HURT. But, not as much as I was expecting it to. They are also addictive. I have been planning one for on my shoulders as well, just working on the final ideas in the design. Also will get one on the under arm of my left arm. First, let this one heal...and the wifey get used to it.

I used East Side, and the professionalism was fantastic.

I have two tattoos so far, one on my back (the kanji) and one on my calf (the butterfly which is actually 3 butterflys, symetrical)

I wont ever get my calves done again, it was agony. The kanji is between my shoulderblades and was a walk in the park compared to my calves. Next ones are planned for my forearms.

[edit] the kanji means from top to bottom firewhite, pure (I had it checked before i did it) and after 10 years is still raised like a new tattoo, apparently something to do with the ink they used.

If pain is an issue the following will make a big difference:

No booze or drugs before hand.
Drink plenty of water before hand and during.
A good meal/breakfast before.
Pain relief before.
Positive attitude.
Accept the pain-enjoy it:devil2:
Talking to the tattooist, listening to music, watchin' a vid. All take the mind away from what is happening.
Oh and perhaps most importantly HARDEN THE FUCK UP lol!

I have very knotty calves (joy of short archilies) so I did all of the above, except talk to this tattooist cos she wasnt chatty AT ALL! The thing that pissed me off the most is that every time she hit a knot my calf would spasm and she would push harder!

Anyways, got a better plan for the forearms than i had for my other calf!

mate, the colouring looks absolutely awesome!

As far as pain management goes, never EVER fortget to focus on your breathing: slow, deep breaths...and even deeper breaths when the pain hits. It makes it surprisingly easy to deal with it.

Each arm was 7 hours total tattooing. The only time I struggled was after to much booze the night before and a lack of breakfast, the rest of the time I kinda liked the pain to be honest:Punk:

Did 2 sessions on my stomach before I tried emla cream for the 3rd session, smear it on about 2 hrs before session then cover with gladwrap to make air tight, remove just before starting.

Only thing is it makes it all too easy, there should be pain

Round 3.

Had more colouring done, went over the Phoenix again with more red to make it stand out. Got the outline of the Carp done underneath my arm, stretches from my armpit to just above my elbow. The armpit was OK, the inside of my arm hurt like hell though. More nerve endings I guess.

The blue at the top needs going over again, getting some dark patterns above the top of the burst to make the bright colours stand out a bit more.

Obviously, the Carp has the shading and colouring to be done yet.

Two more sessions, and I should be complete!

Next session is September 12.

Round 5 completed.

Round 4 included the clouds and detailing at the top of the Burst, and some black shading around the Carp.

Round 5 had detailing of the Carp (scales and fins), water, rocks and more shading.

Armpit was quite sore to be done, particularly with a solid colour. Very uncomfortable. Stoked with the result though!

13 hours down, 2 more to go!

I have three....first was when I was 17 much to the horror of my parents. Complete arm band and were talking 16 years ago. NO ONE had it. I have a babyphat cat and my fav is:

I came back fromthe USA and wanted to get a lower back (again not common back then... 10 years ago) asked my sister to design it (maori) so she was like ok Ill get it too as a sister thing. It was her first tat she was 17 then holly F my mother who was 45 never had a tat and scared of needles says....if its family I am too and got it with us. 3 girls in the family all with exact tat on the back and dads getting it as an armband for his 50th birthday..... sweet. My sister and I have decided we will add when we have children (if I do) so the tats will grow as we age. If we have daughters we will encourage them to also get it (the basic 1st design)

Nice mate, the under arm part must have stung a bit! Heard only good things about Adam Craft.. should have gone there when I got my tatt. Went to Murv at auckland tattoo studio and once it had healed up there were bits he'd missed when colouring in. Ahh well, not a big deal to touch up, just have never been bothered to do it.

Yeah, the painful areas for me were at the bottom of the armpit and down on the hip bone. Thin skin = ouch

One day the plan is to get the other side of my trunk done to even it up a bit. Just need another good reason to do it and to stop spending money on other things haha

AWSOME, i have 3, know about the pain you speak off. at least it goes, the addiction for more ink doesnt. look forward to seeing updates. also put sunscreen on to stop fadeing. my good friend did mine, now moved to germany so no more for me till he comes back. have one of mine out lined with black light ink, so it glows under that purple light.
