I had a 400cc one of these babies. I'd be suspicious of the mileage for starters. I won't comment on the price as the 250cc market is insane. I had to replace wheel bearings, cush drivers, fork seals and clutch on mine but it had done 40000km (legitimately).

The 400 single was great as a commuter but pretty hopeless on the open road, so I'd hate to think what the 250 would be like.... (sorry).

Anyway, good luck!

Thats a pretty high price for that sort of 250, its the yamaha equivalent of a gn250, expect lots of vibes and struggling from it at highway speeds, but bliss for 50k/hr commutes
Heres another for 800 less and the same number of k's but is a 2005 model

Depends what look you are after, but theres a 89 GSXR250 on here for 3200, and alot of good bikes available for around the 3 grand mark,
e.g. Cruiser style with the good ol GPX/ZZR base engine: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Motorbikes/Cruiser/auction-142398422/k-921762.htm

I had an SR250, about that age, and that's a COMPLETELY INSANE PRICE.
Forget about it. You can get a brand new 250 for near that.

Also, I read it has a brand new rear tyre. Why would it need a new rear after only 8000 km? Something fishy is going on, must have heaps more kays than that. 250's don't go through tyres that fast.
Here's the trademe ad. (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Motorbikes/Classic-vintage/auction-142087581.htm?key=961616)

im planning to a small commute every day BUT i really want to go riding in the weekends or after work in the country so a cruising 100km bike really is a must but still must be around 3000(prefered under 3000) and not kill its self going 100km.

I reckon you can do it, a friend (PirateJafa) got his bandit from a dealer for between 3 and 3.5, with 8k on the clock.... I reckon you can get something for a bit under

Thought about a dual purpose bike? Lots of good offroad action to be had out your way (or so i hear)

I recently bought my SR250 - 2005 model, had done 6,900km (see profile pic). I picked it up for $2,700, with new WOF and 2 months reg. I absolutely adore my bike, but I suspect I overpaid. Given the chance again, I'd try to knock the price down closer to $2,200, but it was the whole euphoria of getting a first bike that kinda screwed my judgement.

In any case, the one you're looking at is substantially overpriced.

Just wait, wait. Something will turn up good and cheap and reliable.
I got my KLR 250 for $800, and it goes fine, more horsepower than a GN or an SR.

My 85 Suzuki GS1100G *and* its sister (parts bike) cost me less than that.. Sounds like an incredibly stink deal. Take your time and get more for less

sticking with what everyone else is saying, just keep looking. if something seems too good to be true, you can bet your ass its too good to be true..got a mate wanting to buy his first bike, real keen on a zxr250 but i keep telling him, no, they're notorious for being thrashed, guy says "$5000 once i replace the clutch cable"..

fuck off..that means the clutch is fucked.

just watch out..people will try to screw with people rushing in for their first bike.

also..i apologise if that makes little sense..i'm on my 13th tui.:-) just be amazed i'm spelling correctly!!!

Oli - as other have said, be patient. Keep looking. If you rush in to buy, you could be sorry.

How important will it be for you to go highway speeds, or to pass someone going 95 kph? The SR250K is underpowered.

And keep in mind that Jap imports often have the odometers wound back - no matter what the sales guy or owner says. I've seen 1989 bikes for sale with 8000 km on the clock... yeah, right...

Whatever you choose, insist on a qualified mechanic to check it over and test drive the bike, and I'd go for a new WOF done at a testing station (not the bike shop where its for sale). You'll have to pay for the check and WOF but its essential to avoid costly repairs after you part with your $$. If the owner or shop won't go for a mechanic's check and new WOF - walk away.

Ok guys well iv found a local FXR150 which i was thinking of as a serouis option, Its done only 6000km's and has had two owners and this lady has had it for two years and she only ride it a couple of times and has been kept in a garage since then. I just looked it over, i dont know much about his sort of thing but as far as i could tell there was almost no damage at all to the fairing, lots of tread. Only thing is the battery doesnt work but she said she would buy a new one and get a WOF and a rego on it before i actually pay for it. I will ring the place where shes getting the WOF done and ask them what they think of it. Whats do you guys think?Oh and she wants 2800 for it but with the powers of persausion it should get lower as there are some on trade-me for about 2400 but this is in pretty good nick i think.

that sounds like a better bike, the battery will die if its unused for a while and may not hold a charge but a battery will cost under $100 see if she will take $2000 as it is and you do the rego and wof

Fxr FTW mate ,

i had one of them in my L-plate days and they were fricken awsome bike to learn on ,tyres .....i never had to even bother about changing them id say you wont either, they would last for ages.

can sit at 100km fairly easy and run on the smell of an oily rag i think i used to get about 400km plus out of a tank and the tank is only something like $10 to fill :2thumbsup.

Id get that ,just get it checked out by someone first so you dont end up forking out on things to early.
