Ok so here's the scenario...
A guy I know has just put a lot of coin into restoring an old H1
unfortunately the guy he bought it off bought it from another guy back in very early 80's without a plate...
The local VTNZ have been most unhelpfull saying thier records were computerised in like 1986 so can't help us.
All he needs is proof that the bike was/ has been registered in new zealand so he can get it reregistered all resored and stuff.
So how would he go about doing this?
I suggested phoning the vtnz head office and then maybe seeing if the police had a record of the bike. But does anyone know where we may be able to find actual registration records from probably the late 70's?

Police only have access to LTSA records, so I doubt they'll be any help, unless it was stolen, and the chassis or engine number is recorded as such.
the chassis number is the key, but i'd be surprised if there is any record of it if it was never vinned.
have a read towards the bottom of this >>> http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/factsheets/09.html about re-registering. i can't see how reregistering an older vehile is a huge problem - there are plenty of older cars found in barns etc that have no history available, that seem to be driving around once restored. i would have thought that if the chassis # was not reported stolen, then there is a process for re-registering.

He asked that. Apparently VTNZ need proof that the vehicle was once registered in NZ before they wil reregister it. Possibly so they don't register bikes that have been stolen overseas and imported but you see the problem we have if the paper records from this machine are lost in a box somewhere.
From the link you gave me ..... The reregistration process
The reregistration process involves a safety inspection, certification, registration and licensing. A Transport Service Delivery (TSD) agent can carry out all of these steps. You (the owner) need to provide proof that the vehicle has previously been registered in New Zealand.

Going through the same thing myself. (for a 2000 model KR)
Sadly the owner that deregistored the bike I'm trying to re registor is not coming to the party in sending me the simple note that he sold bike to me.
VTNZ won't touch it until I can prove where I got it from.
I Hoped for better from another KB member! :argh:

Thanks, but they tell me it has to be from the person who deregistored the bike.
LTSA would have data on who that was wouldn't they?

You can go and see the Vintage club, they will make a passport for the bike with a photo and stuff, at work we put a few bikes on the road witch haven't been on the road for 40 years.

I'm afraid you have very little chance of finding early registration records.
Back in the day, registration wa shandled by local authorities eg Waikickamoocow Borough Council). In the 80's they were all abolished and theier registratiuon functions handed over to MoT , and, as you note, computerised in 1986. Anything that MoT had on bits of paper went into the computer in 1986. But they only collected the current valid regos from the local authorities. The older stuff , going back to 1800 and ump was dumped with all the rest of the local authority stuff when the said local authorities ceased to exist (don't *ever* get me started on that piece of despotic , authoratarian gerrymandering skullduggery - even worse than KB).
Your only hope, if you know where the last rego was (ie what council) see if there is a local "Waikickamoocow Historical Society"). Some of those old records were collared by the outgoing Town Clerk or Borough Engineer and still are around. But it's an awful long shot.

Mr Racey Rider's problem is not proving thatr his machine was previously registered in NZ (as is the OP's). It is proving that he is the lawful owner.
Can you not get the thing from the polis that says they are not interested in it ?

Strange.
I have registered a few bikes that have no papers nothing.
I go to the police, get them to fill in the form that says that they do not have anything re the bike (frame and motor number) outstanding.
Then I go to the local VTNZ and book a time to bring the bike in for a VIN.
On that day I make sure I turn up before my time. (With a tidy and clean bike!)
I give them the form from the police, the frame and motor number. They check their system and tell me that they can not find the bike there. OK I say. Must have been out of the system for ages then. They do their thing, take my money and I get a VIN. I can then pay for the licensing there and then or come back later if I do not have the money. Once I pay for the Rego I get a plate. The VIN inspection is also a WOF.
And I am on my way.
There has been no need for any reciept from previous owner, no hassles. Everyone happy.
Last one was eh... 8 - 10 months ago. Has something changed since then?

Why dont you try the dealer in the region the bike once lived to try and find if they have a service record for it based on the previous owners name
( assuming you know that) and then you can get the bikes old rego or vin number or whatever.
Ok its a long shot but hell , whats your option ?

Or, how bout this:
Get an old black plate that has been out of the system for a while and is not in their system. (You can ring LTNZ an ask when you find a plate). Then fit it to the bike. Make sure it has one of those old coloured rego stickers on it.
Then when you turn up to do the VIN (and you have the police papers with you) they can se that the bike used to be registered in NZ a long time ago, even if it is no longer in their system. Should do the trick.

My impression is that there seems to be an enormous amount oif variation and greater or lesser give and take based on the personality of the LTSA dude involved.
Which doesn't seem right
With old bikes (or cars) inevitably there are going to be a lot that don't have a perfect paper trail ("fished it out from under a hedge"). The systenm ought to be ablke to accomodate this.
If the thing is 50 years old and the police have no record of it how anal do they have to get , FGS. Shit, on that basis some of the wouldn't VIN me - I'm more than 50 years old, have no police record, but no record of previous ownership.
