View Full Version : Pahaoa - today

Woke up this morning to a bit of poopy weather and decided to take the Transalp over the Takas out to Martinborough and then on to Pahaoa.
Just fitted our new packrack and RJ's explorer bag, which fits the telescopic fishing rods, lunch, wet weathers etc. really well.
Blowing a gale, but got out to the Coast dry. Good ride without too much thick gravel on the road, just need to watch out for the livestock on the road. No water in the creeks over there at the moment - bone dry. Really sunny at Pahaoa, but the river was dirty closer to the sea. Came across a fallow deer on the road on the way back. Didn't have a rifle!!
Has anyone been fishing out there? We stopped just back from the "private property" sign before the houses. There is a wire fence down to the river and a large area this side of it. We guess that is where most people do their fishing there?
Be interested to hear from anyone what they have caught out there.
Rode back through Martinborough. Blowing a gale all the way and hit heavy rain on the Takas, but cleared up at Maoribank. (230k there and back from the Hutt Valley).

You've seen my pics of our rides down that road to Pahoa so you know I love that road and would recommend it to any gravel road rider.
I can't help you with any comment on the fishing though, its not my thing.

Thanks for the piccies. I have to say that it isn't green like that at present out there. Very brown. Hard to know what the sheep are eating in some parts!

Excuse my ignorance, is Pahaoa further east past Martinborough?

Well done with the piccies Merv.
Wanna slow down a bit, we're trying to keep up! Haven't got too many more back roads to check out round the Wairarapa now. Will have to start looking north of Woodville sometime soon.

Yeah but where are your piccies?
As for toher rides, I just ran out of time in the last couple of months being away in Oz and Auckland 2 or 3 times each but my next plan was to have a holiday with Mrs in Woodville (crikey Woodville you say, but we've stayed at Martinborough, Greytown and Masterton so working our way North) - use it as a base and do Makairo, Takapari, North Range Rd etc.
In the end I just did the day trip over North Range Rd with Zukin on Waitangi Day - Frodo came on that one too and it was a good ride. You remember the pics here eh http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=66599
marks didn't do that one because he was heading South with tri-boy.
