View Full Version : AWESOME Biking grin

My youngest (10) needs to be picked up from school by me on Thursdays (mum will be working) and since I chose to drop a car (wife has one - I dont) - he has to pillion on the bike.
So we borrowed a helmet and jacket and went off to practice - and he LOVES it.
We pulled into the garage. He jumps off and said "Dad, now Im a biker - I need a nickname) - Thus he became "TJ" (Tank Jnr.) He has been grinning for days, insist on being called TJ, and spent an afternoon at Cycletreads with my buying gear of his own.
We (because he looks at bike stuff with me now) got online and ordered up a sissy bar, luggage rack and tour bag - because he wants us to go do some touring together.
Its one of those "its really cool to be a dad" times.
Biking rocks - but sharing it with your kid rocks even more!

Oh mate... as the father of an 8 year old that rides pillion every now and then I hear you. It's awesome isn't it?

Yeah man - two for two!
LOL thanks for this... it really made my day (because I relate to everything you just said!)

Absolutely agree with all the above.
And now one of the kids wants a bike license and bike of his own. He has a car license and a car of his own. He recently asked me "If I get a bike, will I be able to come on rides with you?" the reply was...
"Shit Yeah!" :Punk:

Great story.
Let's hope his Mum doesn't hate you getting him hooked on biking at such a young age.

hehe .... as a Mum of boys let me think about that .... the weekend arrives, along with a quiet, empty, peaceful house, a bit more room in the garage, and limited cellphone contact from the troops ........ :D

Mum doesn't mind at all - she thinks its great.
She pulled the pin when I took him to boxing lessons when he turned 5 - so I know when she's unhappy.

Awesome dude, I have a lot of fond memories of growing up visiting my uncles farm and riding with my dad on the dirt bike and the quad.

My 16 month old grandaughter loves our bikes and can recognise mine if it's parked somewhere. She has learned to say Honda (which comes out as "onda") and can say "key". If I give her my key wallet she'll open it up and select the bike key which she then holds up and says "onda". This results in her leading me out to the garage where I'm required to sit her on the bike's tank so she can hold the handlebars and we run the bike for a minute or so. She understands how twisting the throttle makes the bike get louder but doesn't quite have the strength to do it herself yet.
Alternatively she'll toddle out to the kitchen and look at us saying "onda" and then point to where Mrs Oakie's bike key hangs up and say "key". The result is another trip to the garage although on Mrs Oakie's bike I'll quite often take her up and down the drive while she sits on the tank holding the handlebars which she loves. (Quite safe as she's surrounded by my legs and arms if she lost her grip).

All 4 of my kids love going for rides on the back. I used to take the older 2 to kindy/kohaunga and school often. I'd always offer them the choice of 2 ways home, the normal way (past the dairy and good chance soft touch dad will shout some lollies lol) or.....'The motorbike' way, loads more corners, they always chose the 'motorbike way' :2thumbsup:wari:

Priceless - that had me laughing. Good thing you didn't go for Muay Thai ;)
And Oakie - get some earmuffs for your granddaughter would be my suggestion...

Excellent Mr Tank!!!
Same thing happened with my son and his stepdad (007XY) on his 9th birthday.
The little man has been hooked ever since (a year and a bit) , and is really focused on being a really good pillion.
Hopefully when he'll be about 15, he'll want to come along to rallies with us, as I strongly believe it's important to have hobbies in common with teenagers to keep them close and yet let them be individuals.

Shit hot stories guys. My daughters (9 and 11) fight each other in a special cage I've built, for the chance to come to the track with me. I'm now in the process of getting the right gear so they can come pillion occasionally. Looks like I will have to put the pillion pegs on. The latest question is "When will I be old enough to come to the Cold Kiwi"?
Great story Tank, excellent bonding time and now you have a constant companion / pillion!

For my own reasons I don't ride on the road anymore, but I'm still a very keen trail rider and over the few months my 12yr old daughter has been learning to ride her CRF100 with me (won't be long till I can't keep up!!) I can't even begin to express the joy I get from seeing her tearing around an MX track, having a ball. The grins and laughter in the pits, making really cool new biker friends, the Subway on the way home, cleaning and servicing the bikes together, planning our next ride, posters of KP all over her room (who she actually gets to talk to) I could go on and on (but won't) Being a Dad is bloody good.... :woohoo:

I brought myself a Busa back in November for a bit of fun.
My kids saw it and instantly asked for a ride!
So after a few weeks, Santa brought them a helmet to share (Santa really is a good bastard!).
Took my 8 year old son out for a quiet one. He enjoyed it, but was telling me to slow down alot. Told him to never take his hands off the pack rack. Got back home and his hands were all sweaty!!
Had a big grin on his face though, thinking he was the man 'cause his 6 year old sister didn't go.
Anyway, a few minutes later his sister got to have her ride.
Well, f@ck me drunk!! We hadn't even left the drive and she was waving with both hands, yelling 'YEEHA" as we left!!! Going down the road, past all her friends houses, and she was yelling at me to go faster!!
We left one intersection a bit quick....... and the front was pawing for the sky...... as you do on a busa......... and she began laughing uncontrollably!!
We got back home, and to mums disgust, she told her older brother we'd done a wheelie!! She was laughing like a deranged lunatic. Why? Because her older brother hadn't had enough balls to do one!!
I laughed for ages!!
That was definately one of the better days I've had on a bike!
Now my 6 year old wants to swing on a sidecar like Sidecar Bob does!!
She got her first taste of passengering on my busa chair when she was just 2 years old at the Sidecar Associations 'Have-a-go-day'
What happened to little girls just wanting to play with Barbies???

Onya. My ex has tacitly concented to Ramon (11yo son) being on the back of the bike so long as he wears all the gear, all the time. (cycletreads sorted that out easily)
To make the father/son thing go SO MUCH BETTER, get an intercom system. We have a nolan N-102 each, & it's freaken excellent to hear him gush about how much he enjoys the experience on the back.

Anyway, the sidechair busa is putting out well over 200+ hp (well, was until I've had to change heads and cams to standard for puke) :weep:

Great thread guys/gals!
With all of the positive responses from the young 'uns, perhaps we need to be more proactive in "getting a kid on a bike"?
If each kid that enjoys a ride tells a friend how much fun it is, they in turn might become interested as well?
I know of other sports that hold a "have a go day" so that an experience can be made easily available.
Perhaps those with kids and appropriate helmets, could see if "little Johnny's friend" would also like a quick ride, the future of biking may be a bit brighter.

At the sidecar 'Have-a-go-days', my outfits taken out heaps of young kids over the last 3 years. I've even taken out kids who were shouted their 'ride' for their birthdays!! Now that's a sweet pressie!!
