After some browsing on thumpertalk and following this link -
http://www.amadirectlink.com/news/2006/KTM250XCFW/ -
am really interested in this type of bike, can't see it on the kato nz web site? will we be getting this model, anyone paralell importing them -would love to know before i plump for a new husky tcx 250 and have to lower it to suit me:blink:

The XCFW is the same as the EXC although I note they do not show lights on the pics in your link. The XCF has stiffer springs and valving (and actually the twin chamber forks this year) and no lighting etc and different gearing ratios and forged tripple clamps and different ignition settings too I believe.

 and is a 4-banger.
so would i have to buy a 250 exc-f, take off light and fit board, fit stiffer springs and cock around with the gear ratios to get a xcfw kiwi replica.
I know it's not that much work but will cost on top of already well plump kato prices - would be nice to get one 'off the shelf' and save a bit of coin.

No the EXCF is exactly the same as the XCF-W. What you are suggesting is what you will have to do to get a bike the same as the XCF.

There are XCF's being parallel imported into NZ, though I hear KTM are less than impressed.

I suppose they would be, but i'm surprised they don't offer this model here in NZ like husky do with the TXC's - I would of thought we're prime candidates for this kind of machinery
:headbang:
BTW i'm actually still really confused by all the exc xcf xcwf stuff. the article i scoped on the AMA website - http://www.amadirectlink.com/news/2006/KTM250XCFW/ - is def about a 250xcfw - so i can't see how a 250 exc-f is the same as this model, and i must admit i don't know what an xcf is but i thought exc badge was for the 2-strokes, i did like XTC when i was a young lad though, they made some bloody good music.

EXC=XCW=two stroke
EXCF=XCFW=four stroke
XC=two stroke not available NZ (unless parallel imported)
XCF=four stroke not available NZ (unless parallel imported)
Hope that clears it up for you?

So can you buy one in NZ with a wider ratio gearbox than they have had until now?
The one reason (and only reason) I did not buy a KTM from Motomart when they were the agents back 4 years ago and bought the WR instead was because the KTM had absolutely far too close ratios unsuitable in my view for the sort of riding I wanted to do on the bike. I looked at both 250 and 450 at the time.

No you can't. A gearing change (sprockets) should get you what you require though?

Nope, won't change the lack of wide range gearbox hence just didn't buy one.

What are you trying to do on the bike? The EXC's all have a wide ratio box.

merv, obviously you've stil got the WR, it sure is a tempting bike and have just read the latest 250 shoot out report in ADB mag and it wins by a country mile  (in an all rounder style) have you xc raced it ?

Somewhere on here in the past I've posted all the numbers, but what I'm on about is for old buggers like me that used to be a trials rider, enduro rider and also a gravel road blaster (retired from competition end of 1984 - geez that's a while ago) I like a bike that will stump pull in first gear but also zoom along in top gear - all in the one bike. This is what the old XR Hondas were good at.
What I can't put up with is a bike that has too high a first gear because if you get in the tight stuff you've got nothing left except clutch slip. I'm more of a control it on the throttle and hold traction kind of rider therefore (trials type huh!) and not a young guy who likes to roost and just have it hanging loose all the time or slipping the clutch.
The KTMs in my view had such high first gears for my sort of riding that if you put sprockets on them to fix that you lost the top end speed. The WR250 on the other hand has about a 29 or 30:1 first gear but will still do more than 165km/hr in top gear all on a five speed box not a 6 speed.
I rode the KTMs, then Brendan from Sawyers took me out on the WR and I was sold then and there on the capability of the engine and gearbox combination. It felt like riding an XR200R with its lightweight, stump pulling power, but unlike the old XR it had that extra zing up top when it revs out beyond 9,000rpm onto 13,500rpm.

Either that or have a look at the Huskie 250TXC which is their mx bike with enduro gearbox & electric start & is available in NZ.

I found 1st a little fast too so put a rekluse centrifugal clutch in which was great for snotty trails. The new KTMs are lighter and more nimble now so there isn't much of a problem for trials type riders (me too)

Are they still running a 33/76 primary set giving a 2.3 primary ratio? (This is where the problem was with the KTMs in my view the primary was far too high)
If so even at the ratios you quoted above that bike (XCW) is running an overall first gear ratio of 19.98:1 which is flipping tall for a dirt bike.
I was moaning those years back about the 450 having a 16.7:1 first gear as per this thread http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=37756&page=2

I don't know Merv but I find 1st gear on my EXC pretty low for me. Often I just start in 2nd gear.

Yeah me two, I hardly ever use 1st, 2nd gear does everything well.

Either that or have a look at the Huskie 250TXC which is their mx bike with enduro gearbox & electric start & is available in NZ.
went to get some new brake pads and oil filter for klx couple of weeks ago and the kawi dealer in Trnga is also a husky dealer. Those bikes are bloody works of art - didn't ride one mind you but put my name down for the next test session at maddix park (and a sesh on klx 450 r :scooter:) - they look like they are trail weapons  with all the lights etc.off they weigh nothing. most impressive:love: but as with all husky's going back decades they are tall. and the Beemer buyout doesn't fill me confidence either. the TE 250 efi looked nice but was heavier with no fuel than the klx with a full tank :shit: one for the fans only i think and not cheap either.

350excf might just be the winner, hmmm might be the only other 4 stroke i would consider.

Not only that but KTM have a six month warranty period. A couple of minor hiccups with my e-leg and at no cost, well its worth buying from a recognised dealer.
Wonder if this guy can give a warranty on a $1,000 starter?

Yeah if you could get it cheap enough it may be worth a punt, but for only a grand its not really worth it.

That'd be the parallel importer I was meaning, here's hoping the KTM distributor can use it as leverage to get their cost price dropped.
Speaking of KTM warranty, there's no dealer north of Auckland now :( & there's alot of Orange up this way.

Would be nice but the springs I just got from KTM last week all lept up in price from the last lot! Can't see myself affording a new KTM anytime soon, much as I would like a new SX250. And seeing as they can't get enough 2 strokes in to fill the market I don't think that the prices will be coming down any time soon. Some dealers are already taking orders for 09 2 strokes.
