View Full Version : Near misses between bikes...

Was doing my usual split this morning down the NW motorway, tucked in behind a black Katana and another bike. Approaching Lincoln Road offramp there was a truck in the RH lane and a car quite close in the LH lane. Katana which is at the front goes in to the LH lane and around the LHS of the car as the gap wasn't big enough for him. Guy behind him goes straight ahead between the truck and car. Guy in Katana after going around the car comes back in to the middle to split and didn't realise the guy that had been behind had continued down the middle..............

I'm following this and cringed as I waited for the collision. Quick reactions by both avoided the collision......if only by an inch or two.

Got me thinking has anyone else had similar experiences or near misses with other bikes

Still hoping to one day find out who the dickhead was who almost wiped me out at the Cold Kiwi last year pulling a wheelstand at warp speed past the entrance.

Saw you tootling up and down the bike course at IMNZ on Saturday on that very sexy Katana being Official Draftbuster Man.

Would have been much more awesome if you'd managed a wheelie or two for the pair of drenched motorcyclists sitting on the grass with a camera waiting for their mate to cycle past, though. You'll have to try harder next time.

One of NZ's motorcycle mounted finest pulled me over this morning on NW saying there's been increased awareness around lane splitting because of a number of legs and arms reportedly getting hurt.

I've had a couple of near misses on the NW myself but nothing outrageous, and the most serious was 100% caused by me pulling into the split lane assuming no-one was already using it. Take it easy out there. I've noticed my splitting speed creeping up over time, it's easy to get complacent about it.

Hey yes I have seen a few close ones.

I was heading up the southern a few weeks back in heavy traffic and there was a cop biker splitting the lanes at around 60kph, so about 4 of us kept a safe distance keeping up with him.

I guess we were more focussed on the cop bike than our own positions in relation to each other. There were a couple of close calls where clear routes through and workarounds kept changing for each following bike's position.

I do pay more attention for 'braver' bikers appearing out of places I wouldn't, than I do for idiot cars.

Not quite. My bike, but it was one of my mates on it.

Ah, that explains the lack of wheelies.

What are cagers doing with their legs outside of their car?? If they keep them inside, along with their arms, we will not have to avoid them when passing.:bash:

Whelp, unless they're the arms and legs of innocent car drivers, then I don't see why the Polis should be increasing their awareness around lane splitting.
If you're lanesplitting, and you hurt your arms'n'legs, tough.

Bring back personal responsibility, I say!

If you fuck up, and fuck yourself in the process, it's your problem. No need for Johnny Law to tell you you've done so.

Yes, it's a slow day at work....

Agreed to a certain extent. Highlighting anything I'm doing BEFORE it hurts me is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. That doesn't replace common sense, or accountability, certainly sits nicely alongside it though

I wonder where the officers' claim of people getting hurt is coming from? I haven't seen anything of a serious matter happening since...
Er? Someone being pulled over for a chat?

Accidents' = 0. Injuries = 0.

Perhaps they are pulling the statistics from the Northern or Southern <STRIKE>carparks</STRIKE> motorways?

Lies, lies, all lies. We all know bikers don't do that kind of thing...:msn-wink:

Good that the reaction times all round saved a potentially big messy mess, but will they learn from it, or just chalk it up to another display of their superman skills? Please please please to the former, and :Pokey: if it is the latter.
